You mentioned in a different thread that Ron can be the "Slash" of new GNR. Sorry to burst that bubble, but there's only one guy who could have legitimately replaced Slash
Musically I'm right with you....Bucket has the skills to pull off anything.
But my idea in the other thread was about replacing two things lost when slash left:
#1 : the musical street cred (bucket has this no question)
and
#2 : the media skills and verbal ability to be the 'nice' spokesman of the band as a counter balance to Axl's rants and etc.
IMO Bucket was not the man for #2 because his own gimick means he's unable to freely chat to the press.
I figure the old GNR worked cos Axl called people motherfuckers and pulled off the Rock attitute excellently, while Slash was friendly enough to take care of the PR side enough so that you didn't get years of wierdness like we do now. Like shit went wrong with the old band, but you didn't feel they were a freakshow...dangerous yes, but not odd. Bumble can bring back the 'normalness'.
I totally agree about Bucket's skills though. I know everyone loves TWAT but to me I feel he could have done so much more in GNR. And probab;y would have if it had all worked out better.
Like stuff like Soothsayer and Notthiham...i'd kill to hear a solo that powerful structured into Axl's stuff.
#8003 Re: Dust N' Bones & Cyborg Slunks » Slash Basically Blaming Axl » 893 weeks ago
I think Axl very much realized what Bucket brings to the table. Otherwise they wouldn't have handed him a blank check in 2006 to return.
I truely believe Bucket is crazier than Axl... and that scares Axl.
Bucket is far too much of a wild card for his tastes. Kind of ironic isn't it?
I actually have a question about bucket here. Hopefully some of the bigger bucketfans around here can help me out. And I have to phrase this carefully as I don't want it to sound disrespectful - believe me I love the guy - the solos i've hear him play on some of his solo albums just drop me...but my question is....
How much of bucket's craziness do we know is real? Are we sure it's not a gimic? I would have zero problem with it if it was a gimic, all peformers have some kind of act or costume. No one's stage personality is what they are at home. But what sign is there that he's crazy? Sure he dresses up funny, only gives intervies with a hand, and does funny shit when being video taped like rolling around on the floor or rocking against a wall....but is there like any accounts of him acting crazy in a non-work enviroment? it's not like he's been arrested for waking around nude at the zoo or something. Like everything that says he is crazy is all connected with his workplace?
#8004 Re: Dust N' Bones & Cyborg Slunks » Slash Begins Recording for his Solo Album » 893 weeks ago
It's made my day to see some of the pro-bucket fans showing slash a little love. It frustrates me like I can't explain when people insult either slash or bucket. They are both such amazing players, and both give music so much.
It's interesting what's being said about an instrumental album. While i'd like it, a singer can give a soloist something to bounce off.
What's more important to me, although related, is that the song structures need to be designed to give slash something to work with. I'd hate to see this be an album of just normal songs - each with a kickass 20 second solo in the middle.
One of the reasons slash was so cool in GNR is that songs like estranged, even civil war and locotomative or breakdown, they gave him a lot of room to do stuff....the problem in VR by and large is that the song structures were less complex and more basic...which lead to just small solos.
I wish he'd release the actuall singer list soon too!

It immaterial now, but I genuinally believe around the time of his reamergence at Las Vegas and RIR3 much of the world welcomed him back in open arms.
I think a lot of the main stream public has had a love/hate with Axl for years.
He's an easy guy to throw stones at, press that want to be wankers can just go on about his kilt or his red hair or something, and because of the cancelled shows, and the wait for the album, new lineups...those looking to take him down get a fair bit of ammo to play with.
But that said...i think anyone fair pretty much knows he's an incrediably talented songwriter, and one of the best peformers of his generation. They mock...but on some level they're forced to respect him too.
Even those that mock do so because they need somethign to write about in the media...I think if Axl were to release some more music, and do a few more appearances in the media and stuff a lot of people would still welcome him back.
I actually have a theory: one thing GNR needs is a co-star to balance things out. I think slash used to take this role.
Like the media and axl don't seem to see things eye to eye, but slash is astute at talking to them on their level. Back when the Axl+Slash thing was solid...it gave a strong impression that they had each others backs, and despite the drama there was a plan, and the dramas just kind of added to the effect of following the band. Axl is said to be a wonderful guy in real life, but the media likes to make him come over as an asshole, and when he's able to play to that role, yet have someone smooth it over as well, it worked well. So axl will rant on stage, then slash goes on the talk show and smooths it over. I remember slash comming on our "today tonight" show here in 1993 - which is kinda like our 60 minutes and assuring Melbourne viewers that the 70,000 strong melbourne show was not going to end in a riot.
This forumla also worked for oasis where they had the asshole brother and the nice one.It helps if the co-star is also someone who's pretty talented, otherwise they just come over as an appoligist.
You guys may not get this...but I see Bumble as a potential for this role. Musically he has the chops, he wasn't recommended by Satrini for GNR because he's bad at guitar, he's got the kind of skills guitar mags are forced to respect. Meanwhile he always comes across as a really nice guy and down to earth. But he's kinda hampered by the lack of activity.
Line up changes are not helping. Even though the old line up lost izzy and stuff, the key players in the public view were Axl and Slash - and that survived both AFD and UYI. And adding so many players hasn't helped. The media are simple creatures. It's easier to write negative than figure out if the 'new slash' is bucket, ron, richard, fink or whatever.
What i'd like to see is Axl and Bumble sticking together for a bit, thus giving the media something to work with. You know like push them out there as a team the way Axl and Slash was pushed to us as a combination. If the tour happens it would be great, play a lot of the CD songs, then put out something simple, like a song or two, or an EP, just give everyone in the media some evidence that there are concerte facts to go with the drama. Old GNR had drama - but the albums were real, the peformances were amazing, and in interviews they talked as a gang. The problem with new GNR has been the loss of that balance, the element of flux is still there, but the solid things for people to focus on in a positive way have been few and far between. But when they come - things start to improve - in 2006 when Axl toured I thought a lot of articles were pretty positive about it - they mentioned the lack of an album and stuff - but there was positive buzz when Axl was around in NYC and stuff.
Market it as Axl+bumble, do some promo, a tour, maybe something special like a 1 song release online, some more promo. Let bumble take the hard questions, but keep Axl visable in the public eye at clubs, and in photos, take some photos of Axl and bumble together partying a lot. This is important. That soladiarity makes it look like bumble can be trusted as a person who knows axl. When slash would talk about axl in 1990 i would believe him cos he was clearly a friend/gang member and not an employee. Now while legally bumble may be an employee, this is also the case in othr bands but the public doesn't focus on it. Make it look like they're a team. If axl and bumble hang as crew a lot then no-one will care about the finance. let bumble take the heat. Let axl do what he does best, own the stage and sing, do a bit of a rant, let bumble do the in depths with the media....but give him the credibility of being a close friend of axl.
If that stuff were to happen i think new GNR would gain a ton of respect.
While some make a living bashing, I honestly think that a lot of people out there WANT axl back and gnr back. The problem is they arn't given what they need to play with in a media level.
Obviously Axl does what he wants, and doesn't work for me, but given they don't want a reunion, these are just my ideas on a way to actually get the new band over with public.

Olorin,
You're right about HTGTH, I've seen decent fans call for sanity and respect towards old members be treated very badly by Jarmo the cyber messiah and his tiny island of nutswingers.
That started my problems with Axl. I couldn't believe a man of his stature would be so insecure and weak that he would need a team of those goons to create a forum that must be devoted entirely to his genius with no dissent or even logical questioning allowed. Did Jarmo suddenly decide to be an asshole or did Axl instruct him to do so?
An interesting question.
It's apparent from his interviews that Axl himself still has a problem with slash. It would seem that many who surround him share his view points, folks such as Del James, Beta and others who have made public statements similar in intent.
My belief is that Jarmo, in his capacity as head of one of the largest GNR communities, was approached by GNR managment to assist in normal media discourse. That is, they approached him as a way to present informatuion to the fan base when they wanted to, and to assist in shooting down false rumours, and probably also to enure he doesn't do things unacceptable to the brand. (he is afterall using their trademarks etc). This is all quite proper.
My belief then is that he was given access to the band and managment, and because he was a huge fan, he found this fantastic and overwhelming and was understandably keen to foster the relationship and careful not to do anything to damage it.
I doubt he was formally told to bash slash, but I suspect it's more of a case of "when in rome, do as the roman's do". As he got closer and witnessed hostility to slash within the GNR family he naturally would have stoped posting defences of the old band, if those defences were likely to upset those in managment or Axl himself. It's then only a small step into joining into the group of people who do bash slash.
I think jarmo was put in a very hard situation, he'd be desperate to keep his ties with Axl and co, but at the same was previously a fan of VR and so forth. He found himself wound up in the politics all of a sudden.
I doubt Axl phones people up and tells them to insult slash, but when Axl himself calls slash a cancer and insults the UYI albums, , and when such things are posted on the offical site, and when you run an unoffical site trying to keep it's approval from managment, then if you are a person who want's to keep favour with Axl or better yet impress him, then it's not too hard to guess what kind of spin to begin posting with...even if they've never been instructed to.

It's going to be really interesting how this turns out. I ended up not even nominating songs because I couldn't decide properly which ones I liked best from each artist lol.
#8008 Re: Guns N' Roses » In Retrospect-the best review? » 893 weeks ago
I still listen to it a lot. I agree that you need to spin something else to clense the pallete every couple of listens...but to be honest although GNR has always been my favourite band...I'm like that with all their albums. I wouldn't listen to UYI on repeat either...i just like to chop and change my cds.
Anyway...i agree with *some* of this review. It's interesting his notes that Axl is singing about similar themes to his previous works, ie, heartbreak, isolation etc. Although, that's axl's gift to be able to vocalise these pains into words and sound so well, so I'm glad he has done that as opposed to writing an album about something he doesn't feel.
Where i disagree is actually the 'good' not 'great' stuff. yes it's true - i've apparently turned into the resident nutswinger - despite that i also love slash etc - but I honestly no bullshit think this album is great. I can understand others may not share my opinion. But that's how I feel. Some of the songs on this album are Axl at his absolute best IMO. I still think Madagascar is one of the most beautiful songs ever, and "This I Love" is just a work of genius to me.
I think hearing all the different leaks and stuff, while it kept us going as fans, has made people become familair with a song or obsessed with an alternate version of a song. Imagine if you'd not heard anything since 2000 and you heard these songs, it would be so much to digest at once, but it would be very happy making. It think a lot of people who feel let down esentially discount Better, Maddy, Twat, SOD and others that are pretty much what we had and then feel let down that there isn't something else. If you think of this album as the true origin of these songs, yet hidden from us until now, then it puts a different perspective. Imagine if you'd heard jungle since 1985 live, but they never released AFD until this year, it wouldn't make AFD less of a kickass album that we'd be polarised about which version was best etc. Anyway...i'm rambling.
I'm a huge fan of the old band, the old records, and for that matter slash, so some might not expect me to be talking like this, but CD shows in my opinion just how tallented Axl is. These songs arn't just 'good'. I hear a 'good' song at the local pub by the house band. This album is far better than that.
#8009 Re: Dust N' Bones & Cyborg Slunks » Axl currently married? » 893 weeks ago
^ Pretty upsetting. Goes to show that even someone like a rockstar doesn't have it easy.
#8010 Re: Dust N' Bones & Cyborg Slunks » Slash @ Tom Morello's Justice Tour (Pics) » 893 weeks ago
Will never understand all the hate this guy gets from the nutswingers. I chalk it up to mainly young fans who never experienced the real band.
There's just no way you can be a GNR fan and hate Slash. Dislike some of his post GNR material? Nothing wrong with that, but to say some of the tripe that gets posted at these sites is just unreal.
I agree... It's fine for people to like either band line up...but the disrespect around is quite simply unfathomable.
it's a tradgic legacy of the slash/axl fight it seems....axl doesn't like slash for personal reasons...therefore some people feel the need to hate him.
It's the same with the minority of slash fans who express their love of slash by insulting bucket when bucket is clearly also an awesome player.
I like to think that in say 20 years time, the politics will be lost and the greatness will remian of all the music from all sides.
The on-stage Axl/Slash chemestry was one of those rare things found only a handful of times in generations.
