#801 Re: Guns N' Roses » BRIAN JOHNSON: 'I Had A Great Run' With AC/DC » 427 weeks ago

I have endless love for Brian...but yeah...both the sound mix and his performance in the last leg of the tour was noticeably worse than previously - it actually explained a hell of a lot when I found out he basically did the show nearly deaf.

Being AC/DC it was still an amazing and totally professional show and a great night, but as a long time fan you could tell something was a bit up.

That he soldiered on as long as he did is a credit to his professionalism, love brian - but I wasn't surprised to learn there was something wrong with his health.

The gossip sites here suggested that the split truely was about the hearing - but there was a bit of temporary bad blood in the way it was handled. The rumour was that brian had told angus of the problem but was expecting the band to work out a way to work around the issues and work through  treatment not just send him on his way. The rumour was that he notified angus, thought they'd work out a solution, then a couple of days later all his tour shit was just sent back to his house impromptu and it was like "you're out" type thing.

If it's true you could imagine a bit of a misunderstanding - like you can see Angus wouldn't want to be responsible for letting him get worse damage by performing - they've already lost a bit to the band over the years on a human level - but you could also see why brian might have felt a bit shafted to be abruptly let go like that after 30 years of the road lifestyle with them.

Glad if they're back on good terms anyway.

As for Axl/DC - I think the 2016 Axl/DC shows were Axl's strongest performance of anything since 2009.

He was also noticeably better in ACDC than he was afterwards for the rest of the 2017 GNR tour.

Not sure if that means he damaged his voice, was just worn out, or if he wasn't as into it or what. But it was noticeable.

Love an Axl/DC record if he can bring that 2016 rasp on it. Not so much if they're going to do anything different and change up the ac/dc style.

But the elephant in the room is always a GNR record. For the amount of talent they have. It's criminal if Axl and Slash don't work together in the studio since 1994 or whenever....shows are fun...but history deserves something recorded.

I see what you're saying.

But in Australia - it would kinda be like taking that chainsaw to the movies just incase a tree happens to fall on the cinema.

It's vaguely possible some scenario would arise where having a chainsaw on hand would be invaluable and save you from disaster. But such a thing is so damn unlikely over here that the freak chance of needing it would not justify the pure weirdness of having one with you on social outings.

Heaps of stuff I love about the USA, but damn, if you guys are arming up just to go to the movies, you should consider moving down here...such a thing would be literally absurdist here.

The interesting thing is the USA constitution is a case study in what is good and bad about enshrining rights in a constitution.

The positives are:

* The legislature can't just go crazy and enact wacky stuff. Well it can - but it might be taken to task for it.

The negatives are:

* The definition of what those rights mean can extend further than may have been intended. For example the right to free speech in the usa extends to a bunch of actions not just what you say. Working out the limits creates a shit ton of legal proceedings and complexity to the law.

* Often rights made sense at the time but make less sense over time.

The second amendment is the poster boy for that last one.

Introduced at a time when America faced a legitimate threat of land invasion from other nations, when the lack of communication would make it up to the local community to fend off a front line assault until reinforcements could come. Introduced at a time when there was a very limited police force and when due to isolation it might legitimately fall to a property owner to protect his family and assets alone. In these circumstances the founders considered that it was right to let civilians have firearms - which by modern standards would be antique weapons that take many moments to reload - so long as those civilians were well regulated.

THAT was the intent and why you have the 2nd ammendment.

Today we live in a world where America has the largest and most obscenely powerful army in history. There is zero chance of any nation launching a ground invasion and if they did - they would be wiped from the map in seconds. In the absurdist event that something like that did happen - reinforcements would be able to be sent in moments due to real time monitoring - and instantaneous communication. The distances between areas are covered in moments by jets and ariel weapons the founding fathers could never have even imagined.

Meanwhile If a property owner is undefended - he need only call the modern police department - a highly regulated force of thousands. Meanwhile the weapons available to buy are many many times more powerful than the muskets of old - they reload faster, shoot further, more accurate etc etc etc.

Basically the scenario the founding fathers faced when they enacted that right has absolutely no relationship anymore to the world we live in.

It overall has a feeling of "wait, am I playing this right". It's sloppy, tentative.

Although i loved the shows, There's something that doesn't quite sit right about the current line up.

It's something about the way Slash, Duff, Frank and Richard are playing together I think.

It's odd as Slash and Duff have always had great chemistry together.

Richard is a great player and his solo spots with Slash sound amazing.

Frank was a solid drummer in the Nu GNR era.

So what has changed? I can never quite put my finger on it - but at times it's like Slash, Richard and Frank are just not in sync.

I know you guys mostly hate him but it makes me miss sorum. Like Slash, Gilby/Dave and Sorum were always in the zone together even when Slash could hardly stand.

Is the current band playing to a click? Maybe it's that. I mean Slash is always amazing but he seems less comfortable playing these songs now than he did with Myles in 2012 or so.

That said...problems aside...the current line up versions of some stuff is killer...like the Chinese Democracy title track...I love Slash's outro on it.

My issue is that with the 3 guitarists the handoffs were worse.

Most of the solos were divided between at least 2 guitarists - often mid way through the solo.

So the first 5 secs or so after the switch over the sound people will be fumbling to raise the level of the right guy. Often the camera guy does the same too.

Think of PC Rock In Rio 2006 where you can't even hear bumble's outro. It happened all the time.

But I agree the modern band isn't perfect. Melissa needs to be heavily scaled back. Frank needs to go. Axl needs his 2016 voice not his 2017 voice.

It's a crime they didn't reunite in 2006 I think. We would have had the best stuff ever.

Slash destroys Robin in his own songs, but he also butchers Robin's (and Bucket's) songs, so it's 1:1.

Even if that's true though - 2006 GNR played almost solid AFD songs most shows and only like 2 forthcoming CD tracks....so it still led to more WTF moments in 2006. I do have a soft spot for Axl of that era though - total badass.

#807 Re: Guns N' Roses » Do you believe new Guns N' Roses music will be released in 2018? » 430 weeks ago

I think they're going to do something but I think this year is too soon.

We have a break now where they can be recording, but we know mid year they're doing another leg of NITL shows.

It would be weird to relaunch a new branded cycle without letting the market re-set a bit from the 2 legs of the NITL tour.

So I think it's record now, finish off the NITL tour, then a break of some kind, then the new album and cycle - maybe 2019.

The other issue is I saw in the media a fresh round of Axl/Dc rumours. That could take up a bit of time. So we might be looking at Axl DC 2019 and GNR 2020.

#808 Re: Guns N' Roses » Differences between bands ... lack of professionalism and other issues » 430 weeks ago

There's an interview with Dave where he admits he read that in the tabloid too and got excited even though he knew no one had been in touch from VR/GNR. 16

As for 2006 gigs - I think Slash destroys Robin on those songs, but Axl was clearly more vital and still a powerhouse in 2006.

So either put 2006 Axl in the current band, or current Slash in the 2006 line up as the lead player, and you'd have a 'better than all other bands' GNR of lore once again.

Mind you - both of those line ups could use Sorum...but that's another story!

Should be a good read. He's very honest which will be interesting.

#810 Re: Guns N' Roses » #metoo » 431 weeks ago

It did a little bit when David Bowie died.

Amongst the tributes there were people with stories.

Likewise I think Jimmy Page is on borrowed time for similar reasons.

But the wide scale version of it hasn't happened yet - a mate of mine thinks it's comming and music will be the next movie business in terms of the social media campaign.

There's hints here and there - such as the "Free Ke$ha" movement.

But I think it will start in pop first.

Like people expect guys like Tommy Lee to be bad boys - it's their thing - but they won't like to hear what happened to the Miley's and the Tailor's behind the curtain I thinl.
