#811 Re: The Sunset Strip » SPINAL TAP's CHRISTOPHER GUEST Receives Honorary Doctorate » 923 weeks ago

This Is Spinal Tap is one of my all time favourite movies.  Great that Guest is being recognized for his musical contributions.  I know his songs were never meant to be serious, but he fooled a lot of people into thinking Spinal Tap was a real band (I guess in many respects Spinal Tap is a real band).  Anyone ever see A Mighty Wind?  Think Spinal Tap with folk music.  The film was a fun one.

well its also different up here cuz when we vote our prime minister we dont actually vote for them...we vote for the party representitve in our area (seat) and whatever party gets the most seats their leader becomes the primeminister...i didnt realize hoiw different the us election procedure was

Yeah, we're different in that our Prime Minister is indirectly elected.  However, card carrying members of political parties are able to nominate candidates to be party leaders after someone's ousted or steps down from the position.  The party members get together and vote on who becomes the leader of the party.  That's a somewhat similar process to the primary elections in the States.  The big difference I guess is that not many people consider themselves members of political parties here and don't bother attending the leadership rallies.  And the leaders of the different parties aren't all elected at the same time.

But the systems are completely different.  The American system seems complicated to me (because I haven't studied it) but ours is quite simple.  We have one big general election where we elect Members of Parliament.  Parliament members then elect one of the members to be the next Prime Minister.  Therefore, the leader of the party with the most seats is generally appointed Prime Minister.  So it's an indirect election as the Prime Minister is elected by our elected representatives.

A prime minister does not hold as much power as a president, so they don't have to be directly elected.  The Prime Minister appoints a lot of different positions and holds cabinet meetings and everything, but the position itself isn't all that powerful.  Technically, our highest representative is the Governor General, a representative of the Queen, who is appointed by the Prime Minister.  The Governor General can overthrow the government and call an election whenever she wants.  Basically, our Prime Minister can't do dick without the approval of the Governor General.

And there's the Canadian political science lecture for tonight. 22

This works for my roommate.  He swears by these methods and gets more women in a week than I've seen in a year.  Of course, I don't care.  I'm happy in my current situation.  That kind of stuff is great if it's what you're into, but it's not for me.

Family Day?  That's a new one.  I call it midterm break.  Good thing it's in Alberta too, for future references.  I had no idea the holiday even existed.

but remember what MSL said.. Axl was going to start communicating more openly but doesn't like all the negativity that comes out of everytime he does speak.

I believe that open communication wouldn't draw negativity if it's honest and direct.  The fact that some of the things he's said has misled the fan base (whether intentional or not) does not bode well for his cause.  If Axl came out tomorrow and gave us the exact reason why CD has been delayed umpteen times and gives a legitimate expected release date (if one exists), there would be little to no negativity.  Sure, we'd have people who'd bitch and moan about the reasons and blame everything on Axl, but for the most part we'd accept it as sincere and move on.  News on the entire saga would be better than what we have now, no matter how shitty it is.

Yeah, I do a lot of cooking.  I've been living on my own for a while now and I cook all my meals myself.  Nothing fancy, but anything that makes the job easier is always a plus.  The cookware I got kicks ass!  I'm moving across the country in a few months so I need all these things.

Not exactly news-worthy, but it came up on a Google news search...

Slash Gives Blondie a Makeover

Former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash shocked staff at a British radio station by defacing a picture of Blondie singer Deborah Harry.

The rocker -- who was at Virgin Radio's London headquarters being interviewed on Wednesday -- gave the Blondie star a black eye, moustache and beard when he spotted the portrait on a corridor wall.

Amazingly, station bosses saw the funny side and left the picture up.

A source tells Britain's The Sun: "Out of the blue he asked if anyone had a marker pen.

"A few minutes later he said he needed to pop to the loo. He then walked over to the painting as a runner walked past and turned to him and mouthed, 'Shhh!'"

Breakfast Show DJ Christian O'Connell says, "We're not going to bother replacing the painting. It's a great story to tell visitors."

Here's the section related to GNR:

'I'll burn whatever '˜Chinese Democracy' masters tapes I have, pick up the phone and call Slash, Izzy, Duff and Steve.' - Axl Rose.

Yes, some of the bootlegs that surfaced last year are as good as anything since 'Appetite for Destruction.' But after a 14-year wait, 'Chinese Democracy' can only be a disappointment. Plus Axl needs to realize his band of hired guns are complete wankers and not Guns N' Roses-worthy. Time to trash the masters, call the boys, rent a studio for two weeks and crank out whatever comes naturally.

'I won't become rap's Axl Rose.' - Dr. Dre

'Detox' is the hip-hop 'Chinese Democracy.' Announced almost a decade ago, the album was supposed to be Dre's bong-beat blasted swan song. But Dre just doesn't want to sing. Chronically delayed and declared dead in 2004, 'Detox' was rehabbed by Interscope and given a June 2008 release date. Skeptics abound, but Dre told fans at September's MTV Video Music Awards that ''˜Detox' is coming.'

Note that the italicized parts are what the author wants to be promised and ARE NOT quotes from the actual artists.

I don't think it's fair to the rest of the guys in the band, but it does paint a picture of the public's perception of the band.  It's another one of those "if Axl would bust his nut and get the album out, everyone would stop saying shit about the band" blurbs.

While the two made some great music together, Slash is a little freaked out about the child abuse thing.  And rightfully so.

Meanwhile, former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash has confessed he refused to let Jackson - who was cleared of child abuse charges in 2005 - hold his son when they met in London.

He said: "I give the benefit of the doubt to Michael on everything - he's innocent until proven guilty - but I was thinking, 'figure out your s**t and I'll hold on to my son."

Good ol' Slash telling it like it is.
