Yeah – if anything, the one to worry about is Slash, given that he's got a bloody pacemaker. Duff's very clean living these days, and Axl's always seemed healthy as a horse.
Yeah, I don't mean to be negative, I was just thinking if I take the rock-god out of it - on a human level I wonder. Like some of this stuff is DNA or whatever - I've known people who were clean living and died young and people who did all the wrong things and lived to be old. So you never know.
I just figure from what we know:
Slash - Pacemaker at 30, Long term heroin abuse, Significant alcohol abuse, smoked for years.
Axl - Smoker for a time, Enjoys at least recreational drinking but we don't know how much, occasional non-junkie drug use 'splendour' etc
Duff - History of catastrophic drinking.
I mean hopefully they all have the keith richards gene and not the Malcom Young gene. But take any 7 people and hope none of them have a health issue between 50-70 yo is a gamble.
Their current ages are Slash (52), Axl (55), Duff (53), Richard (51), Frank (51), Dizzy (54) and Melissa (16).
That said I believe Axl will eventually release something like he did last time, I just think given their histories and the nature of life - he's running out of time.

All of this "they're running out of time" panic is a load of flapdoodle though. We know they have at least an album's worth of tracks from CD2 with Axl vocals that potentially date back to the late 90s.
Studio wise I agree.
The next album could be killer even if Axl is reduced to sign language, it's mostly in the can from his power years.
Not sure how the live shows would work though. He was visibly struggling by the conclusion of this leg. It doesn't seem like he's going to be one of those Steven Tyler types that can deliver powerful vocals into his 70s.
But the real "running out of time" issue is health.
With their medical backgrounds and the history of bodily abuse i would be very surprised if someone doesn't have some tangible issues within the next 10 years.
Which seems like a long time until you consider we're talking about releasing old stuff written in 1999 because the last release in 2008 left it off.

If there was any interest in making new music or moving forward as a band they would've taken the time to write and record in a studio beforehand.
Maybe.
But then I think Axl might want to release his CD2 material before writing any new stuff as a band.
That was clearly his position when DJ joined. DJ was handing over songs left and right and bumble was publicly saying writing together as the current band would be grand - but he also said he was aware the situation was the other leftovers would have to come out - before - the (then) current line up would hit the studio.
I'm not sure if that would have changed. I don't think Axl would want to just trash all that work from the past.
I could see him adding Slash into those songs like how he added Ron and Frank in 2007 or whenever.
But that would be a reason to seperate the next album from the reunion tour - as even with Slash on it - it's not a reunion album written from scratch - it's more like random other Axl songs with Slash added.
Another possibility is they decided to take the "baby steps" approach and see how the tour goes first. After all disputes about the music and general dispute over control of the band and it's activities was one of the key problems that caused the old band break up. Why go straight back to that - it would make sense to see if things are better first.
For Slash he could see if Axl is really a changed man and curbed his behaviour. For Axl he could see if Slash is really Slash and not some deamon. You could see the tour had kinda a soft start of a few shows booked to see how it goes. Then when they went well they booked a shit ton.
Factor that into the truth we all know that the money is in touring more than records, and that right or wrong Axl clearly suffered releasing the last album, and I can see why it might have been easier to start with a tour and worry about new content later on.
I think the decision to do just that was what made pittman crack the shits and bail as he'd already waited 15 years or whatever.
As fans its disappointing as most everyone else reunited with at least a single or something, but I'm hopeful that it doesn't mean they'll never bring out anything else - just that they decided it would be easier next cycle.

I think there's been a change in 2017 though.
Like in 2006 he was doing demanding screaming.
Then in 2012 he was obviously protecting his voice by singing more cleanly.
In 2016 he used a bit of a mix. Like some parts he would do the clean thing, while other moments he would do the rasp.
Then in Ac/Dc with 1 or 2 songs aside it was pure rasp.
For the first half of 2017 he mostly went back to the 2012 model of general clean just with really occasional rasp.
All that led me to believe he can turn it on at will and was simply minimising it because it's so extreme on his voice.
However what I've found curious is that in recent shows there are moments where he was clearly gone for the rasp scream and has kinda faltered - like his voice has cracked or otherwise kinda struggled.
This worries me. I'm assuming it's overuse - that he blew it out a bit with Ac/Dc and needs some time off.
But I hope that it does come back and it's not permanent damage.
TL/DR : I think there's something more going on that the 2012 style safe singing now. In 2016 he seemed to be able to do both. But here in 2017 it's clearly harder to scream than it was last year.

Some aspects of his voice I think are gone now.
Like he hasn't done the Twat screams with the original (insanely high) melody since 2009 now.
On the other hand - only last year in 2016 - he was using impressive rasp and powerful upper notes - on "Hell's Bells" and "Shoot to Thril" from Ac/Dc amongst others.
So i'm hopeful that it means perhaps his voice is burnt out from the tour and a break will help.
This recent show was better than most of 2017 - you could see he tried more here - but yeah - there's a clear quality difference between this and 2016 - so lets hope it's just fatigue and not damage.
With any luck he can come back in 2016 shape next year.
OR of course there's god knows what awesome old vocals around in the studio too (need i mention the TIL remix).

My take is that sorry sung by a girl has an interesting different vibe, that's a fun arrangement.
To be honest the rest of it - the cool bits are just the Axl vocals. Like "If the world" sounds cool cos Axl always sounded cool singing that. Can't get into that arrangement of better either personally.
It's cool they're doing stuff though I guess.

Yeah I love them but the frustration is enough to drive a guy into depression sometimes.
I tried Axl's approach of trying to just stop expecting or wanting anything.
But it's hard - humans are creative - we can see the potential - we recognise the talent these people have.
It's only natural to want more to come of it.
We've had so much politics and drama over the years that it's easy to forget the simple truth - they're great musicians.
I'd like to think that they have something else left to say musically before they die. The albums they've made so far are amazing.
But when I get depressed is when I look at the time frames - like never even mind what happened in the past - lets look forward - realistically their skills will wane as they get older - Slash will start to play worse, Axl's voice will falter more etc. If they want to do something recording wise - I think the time to get started on it is really now - not in another few years.

Yeah...the way Slash does the outro solo on Chinese Democracy blows my mind every time. It's fucking epic. And his tone on the main riff is awesome. It's a simple song but it makes it so exciting.
I know it sounds nuts, but I'm convinced the main riff from silkworms would also sound amazing if played in a rock way by Slash.

Listening Again...Slash's tone is sooo good!!!

Axl`s low register is alright but the moment he tries to hit high notes, is just painful.
I'll be honest and say i've been having a hard time adapting to how his voice has changed.
Often when watching modern GNR i'm loving the instrumentals but Axl's part is just kinda jarring.
I think that's been the change since about 2012. Prior to that time GNR was usually better live than in the studio. Slash is still the same way. But these days the vocals are so questionable live that I start thinking listening to the CD might be better sometimes.
He seems to have less pitch control this tour too, so i'm thinking maybe some of it is damage and age rather than just being casual about it.
I'll give him though that he really seemed to be using less Mickey than in previous shows. There's still quite a bit but passages he often skips he seemed to be intentionally adding a bit more grit to in places.
