We still don't know that Axl doesn't need the money anymore, some people just think he doesn't.  My guess is he's not as well off as some people think he is.  He's been raking in the money, but it's expensive supporting all the hanger-ons around him too before you even count the payroll.

I am sure he is better off, relatively speaking, than Neil Young was in 1975. It was a comment more about Neil's attitude on art and music vs commercialism. I wish Axl had that attitude.

here is Young's comment again....
"You gotta keep changing. Shirts, old ladies, whatever. I'd rather keep changing and lose a lot of people along the way. If that's the price, I'll pay it. I don't give a shit if my audience is 100 or 100 million. It doesn't make any difference to me. I'm convinced that what sells and what I do are two completely different things. If they meet, it's coincidence."

Elvis's big problem was the colonel. Not only was he a terrible manager, his take was completely outrageous. On top of what he was stealing from the guy. It's no coincidence that when Priscilla took over the estate (not when he died, which is wrong) and his old business team, including his dad, were fired, that Elvis really became a profitable organization.

I think there are some similarities, but the big difference, IMO, here is that Beta actually cares about Axl and I'm sure he's not a very easy person to handle. And I don't think Axl's entourage is that big, and nowhere as big as Elvis's.  I'd bet Axl is in much better financial shape than Elvis was.

He's probably got a pretty big overhead, but I doubt it's as much as Elvis'. Either way he can always do another tour so it shouldn't be a "problem" per se.

That's no excuse to not put out an album though. What does he think is going to happen? That touring in SA and Europe is suddenly gonna lift his status enough for the record company to give him a better deal?

It's a safe cash cow, but the only thing that can raise his value at this point is to release good music so that people stop seeing him as just a wash up.

he's holding the new music ransom, the way he always has done, to get the best deal for himself.
& whenever he wants to release music the label hold it ransom in the hope of getting Slash on there.

that's supposing he has new music of course..

or at least that's what i can tell from it.
now, if that is the case, there are of course two sides to it: he's right not to let himself get short changed, especially in a business which does make a lot of money for people who have very little to do w/the creation of the music. but at the same time, fucking hell, y'know? there's more important things than petty business victories. that shit'll be gone when you're dead & nobody'll give a toss. but the music, it could last forever & reach places he'd never even dream of - & that's what should be important.
just let it fucking go, y'know?

eh.. it's too late now tho. the chance has gone. the power's diminished & the spirit's broken.
they fucked it up.

We want a band that plays loud and hard every night
And doesn't care how many people are counted at the door
That would travel one million miles
and ask for nothing but a plate of food and a place to rest

They'd strike chords that cut like a knife
It'd mean so much more than a t-shirt or a ticket stub
They would stop at nothing short of a massacre
And everyone would leave with the memory there was no place else in the world
And this was where they always belonged

And we would dance like no one was watching
With one fist in the air
Our arenas just basements
and bookstores across an underground America
With this fire we could light
With this fire we could (light)

Just gimme a scene where the music is free
And the beer is not the life of the party
And there's no need to shit talk or impress
'Cause honesty and emotion are not looked down upon

And every promise that's made and bragged
is meant if not kept
We'd do it all because we have to, not because we know why
Beyond a gender, race, and class,
we could find what really holds us back

Let's make everybody sing
That they are the beginning and ending of everything
And we are stronger than everything they taught us that we should fear

i find it one of the many unresolvable(?) contradictions & dichotomies of Axl & GnR. they do make that great art, but they are dogmatic in their business dealings - to their detriment.

it does appear to me that the $$$ is more important than the music (therefore prob not unresolved...)

but when they bring it, they bring the fucking ruckus. so to speak.

i just wish he could find an easier way.
but he seems forever intent on saying "no" unless it's on his terms.
& that's another thing i love about him, but also something that can piss me off!

If he could co-exist with Slash, they'd be the Stones of the era.

In some alternate universe, they are.
