I don't think it's about money as much as it's about wanting to be in control.

Axl seems to want to be in control of what happens to him and his art. And that control itself is preferable to compromise even in situations where it results in harm to himself.

The band would be bigger if he would compromise with old members, but he wouldn't be the one in charge. If he'd play nice with the label then more shit would probably get done, but he doesn't want to on their terms.

One could play armchair shrink and say it's a reaction to the abuses and control exerted over him as a child that he needs to be in charge now.

Or it could just be a combination of things.

With the old band he was smart enough to know his outbursts could get him fired and so manoeuvred himself to a place where that can't happen.

And with the label disputes - I'd believe maybe he just finds it offensive that non-creatives come in and start telling him what he should do and earn a buck from his efforts.

It does seem to have bothered him that aspect in the past - like unlicensed photographers back in the day and so on - he doesn't seem to want others to profit from what he goes through unless it's pre-organised in some way.

you may well be right MC. fair enough call.

it is frustrating that part of what makes him so awkward is also part of what makes him so arresting. 'cause maybe if you take out that part & normalise him you risk wrecking what makes him so special.
but fuck like, it'd be nice to find some common ground once in a while where he could get things done & released. for my sake! tongue nevermind him & all the BS, it should be about what I want! why doesn't he realise this?!

We've heard Axl/GNR say something like: "once we sort out the label-thing...".

My guess is that the label want a piece of the touring money. I believe that GNR's contract with UMG back in the day didn't concider that a few years into the future their whole business would be basicly gone.

I can totally understand that Axl goes: "Fuck you UMG! We're not out there performing anything YOU guys created! So stop trying to grab my touring money! You guys can sell the records and make your money there. If it's not selling like it's 1991, adjust your fucking business accordingly! Last 4 years have shown that WE can handle the touring part."

And I can totally understand that UMG goes: "Hey, that's fine with us. We can sit on AFD, LIES, UYI etc etc and be happy until the end of time. Go fuck yourself and stick CDII up your ass!

We, the fans, are the loosers either way....  hmm

When I look around
Everybody always brings me down
Well is it them or me
Well I just can't see
But there ain't no peace to found
But if someone really cared
Well they'd take the time to spare
A moment to try and understand
Another one's despair
Remember in this game we call life
That no one said it's fair

Come in here, dear boy, have a cigar.
You're gonna go far, fly high,
You're never gonna die,
You're gonna make it if you try;
They're gonna love you.
Well I've always had a deep respect,
And I mean that most sincerely.
The band is just fantastic,
that is really what I think.
Oh by the way, which one's Pink?
And did we tell you the name of the game, boy,
We call it Riding the Gravy Train.

We're just knocked out.
We heard about the sell out.
You gotta get an album out.
You owe it to the people.
We're so happy we can hardly count
.
Everybody else is just green,
Have you seen the chart?
It's a helluva start,
It could be made into a monster
If we all pull together as a team.
And did we tell you the name of the game, boy,
We call it Riding the Gravy Train.
