Yet another example of the fact that if you have something to sell, you should find a way to make young girls want it.

#102 Re: The Sunset Strip » Theater Owners Decide: Go Digital Or Go Dark » 663 weeks ago

That sucks for all the reasons they mention, but the digital format makes it a lot easier/cheaper for smaller companies or people to get a movie made or even make it themselves.

I think film to digital is one of those rare technological advances that will be good for art/artists in the end.  At least for the little guy, just like how home-recording getting cheaper and easier with digital did for smaller musicians

I'm going to be honest about something and I'm sorry in advance if it pisses anyone off but I want to get it off my chest after yesterdays posts.

The LAST thing I want is for Axl to fail. Axl's music is very important to me. Disproportionately so even. It's why I have a stupid number of posts talking about this band and it's spin off bands.

This doesn't just apply to his old music. I've posted many times about how hearing those screams in twat really kind of touched me emotionally in ways other music hasn't. Just hearing the demo of Catcher many years ago inspired me that it was possible for people to still write great songs even when so much has been done before, and inspired me to go back to working on my own songwriting. So Axl's music is fundamental to me.

It's strange to me that guys like Russ and Nemo and others who I know are long term supporters of the band like me can listen to the same thing I did last night and not notice what I did. I'm happy you guys enjoyed it. I won't go into detail about the issues I noticed, other than to clarify, that I'm not expecting Axl at 50 to sound like he did at 21 - but what I can't deny that I've noticed is a massive shift in his sound since 2009. I have a bootleg of the band from 2009 that sounds now like an entirely different lead singer to what we heard last night.

Watching the part where the jungle lyrics die, to me it looks like Axl doesn't forget them but is actually unable to sing them. I wonder if there's deeper medical issues at play and perhaps that's why he's generally avoiding rasp and more punishing techniques too. But that's speculation.

Perhaps that is just how it has to be. I have no idea of the real reasons it happens - as none of us actually know Axl's medical state, practise regimen, voice condition relative to his age or any other factors. I'm just saying there's a dramatic difference noticeable in these videos which are only 3 years apart and to me that's a cause of concern.

Hopefully it turns out to be a temporary change, like his 01 voice was, or perhaps he'll be able to songwrite in the future in ways that compliment and  accommodate the voice he has now. I hope so.

I just found it odd that other people don't hear it. And then when it was mentioned we're told it's either because we want to be negative or because we expect him to be 20 years old. For myself neither of those things could be further from the truth.

I deeply respect Axl as a musician, performer, songwriter and lyricist and I really hope that in the future he shares more music with us, and if there's medical problems I'd support him though that too, I'm just saying I can't lie and say that I don't notice issues with the performance last night.

I totally get everything you're saying. And I'm certainly not saying the performance was without fault. Hell, Axl even started singing part of You're Crazy in the middle of Jungle for godssake. My posts were directed at the people who seem to only come out of the woodwork to post when they have something negative to say. The people who never have anything positive to add anywhere on the forum. There are people like you who are active all over the site and have more than just doom and gloom to offer all of the time on every subject.

I obviously can't speak for everybody, and the negativity does seem to go overboard sometimes, but so does the defending.  I could easily be wrong, but if Axl had killed it last night I'd be here to read about it and I think a lot of other negative people would be too.  Fact of the matter is, he didn't.  From a lot of different aspects he just didn't.

A buddy of mine is as big of a GNR fan as me, but doesn't follow the forums/bootlegs or anythng like that, and I watched his heart break in my living room last night.

Like Monkey said, it could be a health issue or something, I have no idea.  It sounds to me like a lot of it could be remedied if he just dropped a lot of his vocals down an octave, but I don't know for sure.  He needs to try something though, not just keep doing what he's doing.

Couldn't say it any better than this really.

It’s still hard to be too enthusiastic about the film, although we’ll happily be proved wrong. It just feels like a project happening for the wrong reasons. We’ll wait and see how it turns out…

#105 Re: The Sunset Strip » Rolling Stones Discussion (US Tour Announced!) » 663 weeks ago

I think it was '96 when I saw them and was bitching up a storm about paying $70.  Great show, but it was my first entry in every show I want to see not costing $35 anymore.

At that time I'd see old posters from the 70's that were $10 and bitch about having to pay $30-ish.  Little did I know...

Only thing I don't like about it is the way Mick pronounces "Doom", but that's a small complaint.

I read somewhere there's a chance that Jack White could produce a new Stones album.  I don't know if that was just speculation or if there was actually merit to it, but it's intriguing to say the least.

Bill Burr has recently followed the Louis CK model and put that up on his website for a $5 download. It's good shit.  http://billburr.com/merch
--------------------------------------------------------------
Also, now being on CK's mailing list, I got an e-mail that he is doing this for a friend of his (sorry, it's kinda long).

Greetings to the people and parts of people that are reading this. Hi. This is Louis. I'm a comedian and you bought a thing from me. Well, I'm writing to tell You that there is a new thing you can buy on my website louisck.com. It's an audio standup set by not me but another comedian named Tig Notaro. Why am I selling someone else's comedy on my website?

Well, Tig is a friend of mine and she is very funny. I love her voice on stage. One night I was performing at a club in LA called Largo. Tig was there. She was about to go on stage. I hadn't seen Tig in about a year and I said how are you? She replied "well I found out today that I have cancer in both breasts and that it has likely spread to my lymph nodes. My doctor says it looks real bad. ". She wasn't kidding. I said "uh. Jesus. Tig. Well. Do you... Have your family... Helping?". She said "well my mom was with me but a few weeks ago she fell down, hit her head and she died". She still wasn't kidding.

Now, I'm pretty stupid to begin with, and I sure didn't know what to say now. I opened my mouth and this came out. "jeez, Tig. I. Really value you. Highly.". She said "I value you highly too, Louie.". Then she held up a wad of note-paper in her hand and said "I'm gonna talk about all of it on stage now. It's probably going to be a mess". I said "wow". And with that, she went on stage.

I stood in the wings behind a leg of curtain, about 8 feet from her, and watched her tell a stunned audience "hi. I have cancer. Just found out today. I'm going to die soon". What followed was one of the greatest standup performances I ever saw. I can't really describe it but I was crying and laughing and listening like never in my life. Here was this small woman standing alone against death and simply reporting where her mind had been and what had happened and employing her gorgeously acute standup voice to her own death.

The show was an amazing example of what comedy can be. A way to visit your worst fears and laugh at them. Tig took us to a scary place and made us laugh there. Not by distracting us from the terror but by looking right at it and just turning to us and saying "wow. Right?". She proved that everything is funny. And has to be. And she could only do this by giving us her own death as an example. So generous.

After her set, I asked Mark Flanagan, the owner of Largo (great club, by the way) if he recorded the set. Largo is set up for excellent recordings. He said that he did.

A few days later, I wrote Tig and asked her if I could release this set on my site. I wanted people to hear what I saw. What we all saw that night. She agreed. The show is on sale for the same 5 dollars I charge for my stuff. I'm only keeping 1. She gets the other 4. Tig has decided to give some of that to cancer research.

Tig, by the way, has since undergone a double mastectomy. She is doing well. Her doctors say her chances of survival are excellent. So she went there and came back. Her report from the frontlines of life and death are here for you to... Enjoy.

Please go to my site louisck.com and buy her show. You can buy it here:

Thank you. Have a terrific afternoon.

If you look at the toolbar across the top on the site, that show is actually one of multiple shows that are there for free.  I grabbed the 82 San Fran show too just to give it a listen.

Duff interviewing Jack White for his Seattle Weekly column.  I haven't read it yet, but apparently it's good enough that I saw another article that only existed to link to this article.

MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Tommy Lee has spoken out about the Facebook rant he went on last week where he asked fans to stop requesting pictures every time he walks outside.

Speaking to Fuse.TV, Lee revealed what tipped him over the edge.

"My mother passed away recently," he said. "I was picking up her ashes to take them home with me to do a service for my mother. And so I'm at the mortuary, I've got my mom's ashes in my right hand, and my girlfriend, I'm holding her hand with my left hand, and we're walking out. And the fucking lady, the receptionist, goes, 'Oh my god, can I take a picture with you?' And I looked and her and went [takes a deep breath], 'I'm sorry, but I'd rather not.' Then she was like, 'Are you sure?' I'm fucking standing there with my mom's ashes and it's not the fucking happiest day on the planet for me. I couldn't believe it. I go, 'Okay, that's officially the most fucked up thing that has ever happened to me'. I called the manager and said, 'You're not going to believe what just happened. I don't expect you to fire her or anything like that, but that was the most disrespectful bullshit I've ever experienced in my life.'"

He added, "I sat in the car, and I'm shaking, and my girlfriend goes, 'I'm so sorry honey,' and I was speechless. I didn't even know what to say. I couldn't believe a human being just did that."
