Axl's on a roll, straight from the AC/DC gig to this.
It's nice that he feels good enough to actually show his face on stage. The hats and glasses are sttil there on some songs, but he's definitely feeling confident, in contrast to hiding underneath his apparel through entire shows in 2011-4.
Still a bit cagey, hardly dancing much with that healing foot. He's also minding his voice, hitting the right notes but - just me? - holding back on some of the power, there. Very determined to go through with the tour, but old karma is still messing with him.
Of course, the rest of the band is aces. Would be fun to attend the Chicago shows, as they'd be all warmed up by then.

Pretty sure Angus has also quickly realized how talented Axl is....don't think he will be kicking him to the curb anytime soon.
As a touring band, Guns can be - and has been - ran like The Mats on 'roids, which may offer insight as to why Tommy was OK with it for so many years. However, Axl of 1991 would have zero chance to last in AC/DC beyond a few guest appearances. His attitude would've been just plain wrong.
Angus' got The Ramones' attitude of going to work every time he takes the stage. I doubt he could be arsed to pamper a temperamental frontman. Axl of 2016 is very different in that regard, and a much better fit in terms of personality.

This took place 4 miles from where that singer that was on the voice died.
Both gunmen are dead, so there's little to be learned from them on a possible connection. The events took place about 30hrs apart and were deceptively close to one another, which does raise questions on whether one was inspired by the other, if not more.
The authorities have already denied any connection, which is fair play on their part. Admitting that Orlando became open-season for separate premeditated strikes over a single weekend would make matters even worse than they already are.
Whether or not there was a connection between the gunmen, the local community suffered a major blow all the same. Condolences go out to the friends and families of the victims. It's hard to imagine what the atmosphere must be like there right now.

Clearly, it has to do with what I would guess: anxiety, stage fright, psyching oneself up to perform & getting into that zone / mind frame.
Him being an anxious sod before showtime has always played a part. When I saw them in '06, he was still en route from London (another country!) during the warmup band. Good show, tho, but that tardiness has also gotten gigs canceled. There are also the numerous instances, mostly during the UYI tour, wherein he excused himself from showing up on time in order to watch the fireworks, have a go at the casino, etc. Meanwhile, the rest of the band were getting wasted and the audiences riled up.
It's always been a trade-off between overcoming actual pre-show issues and his handlers allowing petulant behaviour. Del James' enabling article is prolly the most embarrassing example in recent memory.
How hard is it to allocate the necessary prep time for a show in advance and do what's needed to perform - and take the stage within a reasonable timeframe? Guns is always an Axl show in that, and the mental issues have unfortunately included selfishness. In the past, he's needed to be the main attraction and wanted to be waited on.
To his credit, he's been improving in that sense in the recent years. That's another reason why AC/DC is good news - Angus would kick him to the curb for the diva behaviour he's demonstrated in Guns over the decades.

Those reissue Marshalls are said to be great for 60's/70's rock and blues tones.
Going for that Stones sound, maybe? The timing certainly raises eyebrows.

Likely, ask if he is into Fleetwood Mac. Damn autocorrect.
Going out on a limb, I'd expect him to be. 70s rock is what he grew up with.

misterID wrote:He’s Taking His Increased Workload Very Seriously
Saying he’s returned to his vocal coach after two decades, Rose explained why he’s sounding so good nowadays. “I do a lot of vocal exercises. … The Brian Johnson Back in Black stuff is really demanding. Sing it wrong and you might not be signing again.”This is what pops out the most for me. Brilliant (although obvious) stuff.
Future certainly seems to be looking bright.
Now if only there was such a thing as a time machine...
Ron Anderson's back? Good news.
The band has been rehearsing for several weeks - minus Axl. "Part of the reason I don't go to rehearsals is, I like to go all out. If the band's not going out at the same intensity - they're concentrating more on getting the music right - I feel like an idiot, jumping around, taking it so serious," explains Axl, who does daily vocal exercises alone or with his vocal coach, Ron Anderson. The site of these rehearsals is an airplane hangar containing their massive, must-be-seen-to-be-appreciated new stage setup. Not to give anything away, let's just say intense is an understatement when describing it. - RIP 91
Still, why did he bail out of having a vocal coach in the first place? His voice got shot during the UYI tour and the upper register in 2001-2 made him patently Mickey. 2006-10 was pretty consistent, but after that, downhill again.
Newly-found professionalism is good, but it just makes it seem more plain what a pampered baby he's been across the years. If he showed up on tour, he may have been in shape. Lots of luck throwing Angus those temper tantrums, which have novelty value at the age of 5 - less so at 50.

Given they're getting older maybe he'd work faster knowing he's running out of time. Or maybe slower given the touring would take more of a toll.
He hardly needs years to recover. I guess, with Brian and the previous lineup, it had gotten to be about taking a leave from your ordinary life for 2,5 years and making the band a priority. It's a long time to stay together with a small bunch of people and away from family and friends. The downtimes enabled them to ease off on each other and do it all over again. They had a solid foundation, they could all walk away from the band after the tour and think, unless proven otherwise, they'd pick it up again for the next one.
Additionally the next album may be harder to write - Malcom is not in the picture - the Rock or Bust was constructed from spare riffs Angus had kept lying around over the last two decades or so....
It's a different band. They're revisiting the Razor's Edge -era somewhat. Brian was absent from lyric writing, as he was in the middle of a divorce. Ever since that album, the Young brothers have also written the lyrics. This is something I bet Axl would love take a shot at, to put down some Bon Scott metre.
Malcolm is a big loss, tho. Off the top of my head, why not bring Duff in as a songwriter, like he did with Jane's Addiction? He'd likely be the sort of no-nonsense guy Angus would approve to have around. They'd have a strong unit in place, so the process would be different as to with Malcolm, but they could certainly crank out an album. Having Axl on top it all could be pretty rocking.
I think Angus is the type to play until health stops him, but given these facts I think we're a few years out at least from the next record..
We can always wonder how eager Angus would've been to a do a follow-up with Brian, without Malcolm. They could've taken a break and toured the world for a few years with their back catalogue.
With Axl, Angus pretty much needs to do one album to legitimize him as more than a Brian replacement.
I actually think a new-gnr album and maybe something epic is much more likely to happen next.
I agree. Axl's work on the vocals is probably all but done - and has been for a good while.
#299 Re: Guns N' Roses » Half of CD vocals done in a week? » 518 weeks ago
I really wish Axl had just turned in the 2001 album. They would have accepted it with the Best Buy deal in place. That album was the real Chinese Democracy.
Good point. What was redone, mostly, was Paul Huge's stuff. Ron recalled a lot of the rhythm guitars seemed 'mechanical'. As Fortus had recorded his stuff in less than a week, Ron was more likely pointing towards Paul.
Of course, some of Bucket's stuff got shafted due to him being an absentee. This is the emotional tissue between Axl and the songs - every time he heard the old material, Slash was creeping up in his mind. One reason for re-recording some parts was airbrushing disturbing memories, apparently.
I remember in 2005 during that silent year.... fans thinking he was in the studio hard at work daily working on his masterpiece to "bury AFD" when in reality he hadn't touched the project in a coon's age
After, say, the 2002 tour, Axl more than likely took a holiday. That's when the shipped sailed. By June 2003, the label shuffle had folded MCA Records into restructured Geffen, and the new company was also given the price-bull of the old days - Guns. This was Axl, coming off a disastrous comeback tour without an album ready.
In July, Axl held a meeting with someone in a Vegas club and previewed tracks (possibly IRS, Better, TWAT) to someone he wanted to work with. That may be so. A typical Guns idea of being inconspicuous, going to a club a few blocks off the street on vampire hours and blaring the sooper-sekret tracks on the PA. On the other hand, it could've been a Sinatra moment for Axl, minding the shady background of the place.
Any case, August. Geffen say they'll put a Best Of out. At the very same time, Mike Piazza got the IRS disc in the mail. It had three tracks (IRS, Better, TWAT). Three weeks later, Piazza happened upon Eddie Trunk's shows, disc in tow. It read 'Guns N' Roses. I.R.S.' so they what it was. Hell, they'd both been backstage at the Garden show the past December. They were hardly casual fans - they were more familiar with the '02 band than most fans.
It's interesting to note the music started gradually getting out to the open after Guns were brought back to Geffen. This wrangling went on - in October, Geffen settled on a DVD re-release of the early videos. November, Rock in Rio Lisbon was confirmed. You can see a pattern of Axl taking reactionary steps along the way, to convince his old label - with new faces - that he's seriously putting out an album and touring.
They were going through a lot of trouble, at least partially spurred by Geffen's insistence on a Best Of, so a proposed tour is planned (again) without an album. They need Bucket to come in. But Bucket was doing the Bill Murray - wonder if he, too, had a 1-800-number? In any case, Axl's lawyers are fuming at him over voicemail. Hardly a year has passed from the brief and bizarre tour. All the hostility must've been getting into Bucket.
By New Year, Geffen pulled the plug, and this 'one strike and you're out' policy was an entirely new situation for Axl.
This fallout with the label, along with other lawsuits and litigations, took a lot of time to suss out. However, the project was soon set up at Curt Cuomo's studio. Pitman began working as something of an A&R man. He brought in Patti Hood to record the harp on TIL. Caram was in charge at the studio. Pitman was also the one who contacted Ron and working on getting him into the studio. Only Pitman failed to say, 'Shut up about this - they're anxious mofos'.
A lot of the 2004-5 era was therefore about waiting and putting things back together again. More things were added on the songs, and they would've been mixed, up to a degree. But the studio was now costly, even on Sanctuary dime. And who was in a hurry, anyway, as long as the checks arrived on time?

How does this stack up with the Illusions? Didn't he spend a long time on that, not being satisfied with the result?
HTGTH suggests the bulk of UYI was recorded in between June '90 and early '91. 7-8 months in total, and this is including Axl.
We rehearse 36 songs in a month and record the whole LP, all the basics, in five weeks - I mean all the guitars, bass and acoustical stuff; the vocals took a little longer. - src
"Matt and Dizzy had never played with us as a complete band, because Axl doesn't come to rehearsals," Duff observes. "They'd never seen Axl sing with us."
It certainly took longer than a week. Coma was particularly tough to crack.
While laying down vocals for "Coma" (and other songs during the period of recording at The Record Plant in Hollywood), Axl physically moved his bed into the studio. He also had a punching bag brought in, as well as two pinball machines - Kiss and Elton John.
I tried to write that song for a year, and couldn't. l went to write it at the studio and passed out. l woke up two hours later and sat down and wrote the whole end of the song, like, just off the top of my head. It was like, don't even know what's coming out, man, but it's coming. l think one of the best things that I've ever written was maybe the end segment of the song "Coma." It just poured out. -src
Curiously, that was a bit like Catcher.
I read the book. I fell into a deep dark sleep. Went to the studio and sang as a joke what I refer to as the Holden parts off the top of my head... When I got home... I threw my book away... Not in any dramatic way, but more like cleaning off the dinner table.
5-6 weeks in total for 30 or so tracks?
