He's really not, if anything he's terribly inconsistent live. Compared to guys like Maynard James Keenan, Robert Plant, Chris Cornell, ... or even more modern guys like M. Shadows, Corey Taylor, etc... who consistently bring live (and raw, powerful) rock vocals that match the records almost note for note...
I absolutely love Axl's voice, but let's not be blind for his weaknesses now...
Except for the part where he moves around on stage a lot more than others. He could have stood there like a statue and pretty much nailed every song perfectly if he wanted back in the day. That said, there is some bone-chilling stuff from him in the earliest GN'R bootlegs on YouTube (Don't Cry in particular).

I've only heard one GN'R tribute band singer who did a great job on Axl's vocals. He was in a band called UK Guns N' Roses for a long time and he was amazing. I remember one performance of Rocket Queen where I swear to God it sounded just like Axl. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find it in recent years. But this guy would occasionally get a bit too nasally and you would be able to tell in those moments it wasn't Axl. Sweet Child in particular it would be more noticeable than other songs.
There is also the Mexican Juan guy who does a pretty incredible version of Axl, though he does them in a studio and not dressed to the nines like Illusion era Axl (as the UK GN'R was) dancing on a stage in front of a crowd. That's what was so impressive about the UK GN'R dude. He nailed the vocals while also going 100% for Axl's stage antics. Not easy to sing like that while moving around.

65,500 attendance. That's amazing. The Rolling Stones averaged 58,784 for their two shows at the same stadium in March 2016.

I figure considering the band kicked total ass, Word of Mouth will be very strong and tonight's show should be able to pull off a similar sellout with over 60,000 people.

Nah, Freddie Mercury is unquestionably the greatest. Axl's up there though.
Roy Orbison was better than both of them.

That's the benefit of this happening in 2016 instead of 2006. Right now GN'R are the only locomotive in town. All the other big bands are been there done that, and there's nothing new coming up. GN'R being the last and youngest of those bands lands them in a sort of "last man on Earth status". Like the movie "Children of Men", only here we have a situation where no new rock acts are being born.
Yeah it's funny. The hipster Cobain worshipers in the 1990's tried to drive a stake in the heart of GNR's credibility. Axl certainly helped them with the ridiculous horn section and whatnot. He gave them even more ammo in their attempt to pigeonhole Guns with other far less talented, far less accomplished bands of the 1980's.
But in the end, hipster grunge ended up killing rock and roll even quicker than corporate hair metal. Ultimately your legacy rests in the songwriting and GN'R put together incredible songs that will outlive all of us by centuries.
And now it all comes full circle with Cobain's right hand man giving Axl the iron throne for his foot injury and then hanging out at the GN'R gigs in Vegas. Cobain was a hipster poser IMHO. Talented rocker but so are the GN'R guys. And I would bet he secretly loved Appetite and respected their songwriting on stuff like Patience/Estranged.

Someone at the show said he thinks the Cult played around 45 minutes. Guns came on exactly as advertised at 9:30. Those promoters must have Axl by the balls in the contracts.

I believe James predicted that GN'R could reach Stones level if they play their cards right. They got off to a great start tonight. The tour is selling amazingly well with hardly any promotion. I believe word of mouth from this show will be great. They will need to keep playing at a high level to maximize their potential.
The Stones played this same stadium twice in March for a combined 117,000ish people. Curious to see if Guns can beat that number. Looked like they had 60,000+ there tonight.
I also looked at the Stones setlist and it's interesting that they pretty much stick to the mega hits from 40-50 years ago. Guns doesn't have a long discography but the quality is extremely high. You got 8 stone cold classics on Appetite and at least that many between Lies and UYI. I'll take the Top 20 GN'R songs against the Top 20 of any other rock band. And that is all you need for a live show to keep chugging along (Stones & AC/DC are good examples).
The fact rock music died right around the time GN'R imploded in the mid-90's has helped their legacy. They end up gaining huge popularity with later generations because we have nothing to cling to. It's all pop and rap stars my age and younger.
