Dylan is the greatest songwriter of the last 100 years and possibly ever (including classical composers). I'm still in awe at the guts it took for him to write some of the stuff he did back in the day, and the crazy thing is it's even more relevant today than it was 40 years ago. Masters of War...damn.
Ohhh I dunno there were some electronic music guys in the 40's who made music so groundbreaking that it's only really become mainstream in the past 10 years.
Dylan never did it for me personally though I wouldn't deny he's a great talent.
There are a lot of underrated people out there though. I think Buddy Holly tops Dylan. Chuck Berry wipes the floor with him in terms of the things he introduced to music that are still there to this day.
You can take a Lady GaGa song and point out structures and features introduced by Chuck Berry.
I don't think Dylan is over rated, he is brilliant. I just think people seem to think of music in terms of before and after Dylan whereas really Chuck Berry was the point where shit got real.
As for Axl. some of his lyrics are mind blowingly good. The outro to Coma, well, the whole song in fact.
Also Don't Damn Me is probably the best set of lyrics he's got, love it. Love when he gets to preaching about social issues and the likes.
In fact Bad Apples is also amazing, the whole second half of Illusion 1 is just perfect lyrically.

I actually think Myles sounds a little like Chris Cornell on the first Alter Bridge album, and the band sounds more metal than the post-grunge rock that Creed seem to play.
Myles seems to allow Mark Tremonti to be more of a metal player, and he seems to allow Slash to be more of himself too. This can only be a good thing when you consider that both Scotts (Stapp and Weiland) seemed to keep their respective guitarists on a leash when it came to soloing.
No one is denying that. Alter Bridge are a great great band BUT Myles doesn't sing the Slash material the same way he sings the alter bridge material.
With AB stuff he really honors the songs singing in just the right way for each song. He's good really good and AB are great.
However on the Slash stuff, he showboats needlessly. He's aware it's his meal ticket and he wants the world to see how good he is. He doesn't honor the songs, and to be frank Slash is too fucking dumb to notice it.
Slash ain't smart, he's not even kind of smart, he's made some fucking dumb mistakes, one of them being Myles. That guy is using him to make his name.
I wouldn't mine making his mistakes he's probably made more $$$ then all of us put tOgether
For sure. Me neither, I do think if I were in his position though, I'd be back in GNR

I'm on the first AB album and... man... Myles voice is just something that appeals to a certain audience I guess. The songs work, but not because Myles is this "amazing" vocalist. Maybe Myles takes some seasoning, but jumping immediately from Scott Stapp to Myles is even more of a stark contrast to the ears. It makes Stapp sound better, and Myles sound even worse.
I'll keep giving the guy a try. I really want to like him, if just for the fact that Slash is obviously walking into the future for a long period of time with him as HIS vocalist.

Still can't comment enough on how much more amazing DJs solo is. He took those great melodies Robin wrote and really pushed them to the forefront and soloed around them.
Uhm! YES

not sure i agree w/this.
well, he's not like RATM in sofar as he's not shit, but what's Civil War or Chinese Democracy?i do know where you're coming from. he's probably at his best on stuff like SCoM with it's personal but universal reach. but he doesn't shy away from social comment either - "organised religion makes a mockery of humanity etc"
Yeah, he's dabbled a bit, but tbh those are ventures where his lack of a intellectual education glares through. Civil War reminds me of a child crying "why can't we all get along" because he doesn't know any better. I'm glad he kept away from all of that after 9/11.
No offense bro, but if by education you mean "retarded conspiracy theories" then my boy don't need none of yo' crazy school. That's a bag of bollox all of that stuff, blaming invisible puppet-masters rather than taking responsibility of yo life. Grow up.

tbh there aren't many great american rock lyricists & i'd say axl is actually comfortably one of them. its one respect where his smaller catalogue serves him well.
(& in the interests of fairness i should note, tho i shouldn't really have to - just given the volatile emotions of certain boardmembers - i believe the AFD/UYI era band overall is comfortably one of the greatest american bands.) ahem.
Agreed in terms of American Lyricists there's Axl Rose, Dylan, Petty, Fogerty and that's all she wrote.

What the fuck does this even mean in reference to what I said? Are you now insinuating that Nirvana, Pearl Jam and STP aren't good? If so it's you who doesn't know what rock is dude.
I'm saying that bands like the ones you mentioned (with the exception of STP who are to grunge what Sum41 are to the Beetles) were not moving in this direction.
Pearl Jam were moving in the direction they are now in today. They don't and never have released anything like this, nor did STP for that matter as for Nirvana, doesn't matter what direction they were moving towards dissolution one way or the other.
