People have been talking about dated, and the influences... and I'm STILL the only one to hear a ton of Faith No More in If The World? It's almost a FNM cover tune, yet all I hear is that it's a BH 70s funk-porn song. I can't be the only one to hear that.

EDIT: Just saw the post in the If The World thread. That's what I'm talking about. I hear way more of that than I do BH.

It's a 20th century album I guess. But then again the popular new rock music like Buckcherry is pretty much just going back to old Aerosmith roots, so what does that tell you? It's really hard to define a sound that's current... it's just a certain type of retro that's popular right now and that isn't really what CD is, I guess.

I know someone who is a huge FNM fan on an STP forum, i will ask him to listen to If the World and see what he thinks.  I haven't heard too much of them so i can't really say.

One of the biggest problems with current music is that there really is no one sound that can define the time.  It's not like Grunge, or Hair Metal or anything like that.

Smoking Guns- guitars don't get my dick hard.  The mixing is off on these songs, and they do sound a little cluttered.  But just because of that, you can't say that other music is better musically.  Musically these tracks are beyond Snakepit.

Hahahaha, well, as a guitar player, some of the shit Slash plays hits me.  Same for other players.  The "getting a hard on" line was an expression to say its bad ass.

I think Serial Killer could hang with some of these songs no problem.  I think the songs with the mix Slash got would be a whole lot better.

GNR is more like Dream Theatre now, which were heavily influenced by Rush.  So is GNR a modern day Rush?

Guys, prepare to flame me.  After listening to the leaks again today and enjoying them, I put on Ain't Life Grand by Snakepit.

NOT EVEN FUCKING CLOSE, SERIAL KILLER ALONE OWNS THESE NEW SONGS.  Why?  I can hear guitars.  I can hear drums.  The vocals are mixed perfect.  The songs are not filled with noise and clutter.  Its precise, to the point, filled with great guitar solos.  There is even overproduction with car crashes, music box, hip hop song on mean bone.  But I hear the riffs instantly.

I know what the leaks miss, SEX IN THE GUITAR PLAYING.  Guitar playing with sex and balls that makes your dick hard just hearing it.  Take a song like Landslide or the Truth.  These are average songs, but they are focused and if even predictable, they rock.  GNR is a rock guitar band.  Somewhere the guitars, sans solos, is lost.

Buckethead is not on any form of The Blues that I know of. Didn't he leave the stage in 02 when it was played? The Blues could be written by anyone doesn't mean it's not a great single. You call it too generic to be successful, then call Better too complex?

If it's not BH on that outro solo I must be deaf. It's to me a very clear BHish solo.

The Blues is not good enough. Simple.

And yes, I call The Blues to standard and Better too complex. They are not the same song.

GNR will never again do pure and simple Buckcherryish music. I don't want that either. Hit material can be written in another form anyway.

I don't want that either.  Was just saying that, that kind of music can still sell.

I have to wonder, the people who say there is no single or no rockers here? Did you download the right songs? How is CD or Rhiad or IRS not a rocker? How is The Blues or Better not a single. I'm not arguing they are perfect rock songs or perfect singles, but if you don't hear rockers or singles, you're kind of showing some ignorance to what we've got.

I said those were rockers.  Better is all over the map, more of an epic type rocker with all kinds of effects.  I am talking about a riff driven straight ahead rocker.  The only one that fits that is Chinese Democracy.  Chinese Democracy won't be a good single.  It has a good solo though.  I like the song.  Better will be a good single, but it isn't a hard rocker like Paradise City, Slither, or Its So Easy.  So I know there are rockers, but I mean straight ahead, riff based rock.  That is why I used Slither as an Example.  Right now Slither owns Chinese Democracy.  I am not saying it owns Better, but Better is a different type of rocker than Slither.  Do you follow me now?

Well, I wasn't talking to you specifically, just the general feeling, like DCK, who doesn't  hear a rocker.

I guess I follow your argument, but now you're breaking down rockers into different sub-groups. To me, Better is a straight ahead riff rocker. The main riff, which I think is quite catchy, plays throughout almost the entire song, save for the Buckethead breakdown in the middle. IRS, while not as catchy, is certainly a riff-based rocker, as is Rhiad, although it to me is more fueled by Tommy's bass. It's throbs underneath the track and sends it along nicely.

And frankly, mentioning Slither alongside PC and It's So Easy is pretty bold, and it's also subliminal, like because it's there it's on the same level, which it isn't. I found Slither to be incredibly not catchy at all. I like Set Me Free much better, but they all pretty much suck considering the credentials of the people  creating them. Slither owns CD in your world, I guess, but not mine.

I wanted to love VR when they got together, but they failed me and disappointed me so much, I almost feel like I deserve a personal apology from each and every one of them for ripping me off and making me look like a fool for months before their release when I was telling my friends how it was gonna be the next GNR. Made me look like a fucking know-nothing idiot. Honestly, other than on GNR boards, I know no physical person who either owns VR records or admits to liking them.

I'm not getting this vibe from the GNR stuff. A dude I work with who I know likes rock actually asked me about the leaks the other day because he read about them on Rollingstone.com, so I sent him a leak, and  he played them in the office on his Mac. We have a laid-back office, so we can do that sort of thing. The opinions were mixed. People were surprised at some of its new sound. Everyone was interested in hearing it though. No one said anything negative. Overly hyped,  yes. Just like the Star Wars prequels, but still far and away better than MOST rock out there now. If there is mainstream rock getting major play that is better, feel free to point it out.

Good post!  Crazy Bitch by Buck Cherry gets major play and is a stripped down in your face rocker that is just an okay song but did well.  Its catchy.  Has a good chorus.  Is there a rocker that can do as good as crazy bitch?  Maybe Better, but no cover bands want to cover that.  NO pussy will dance to "better."

Right now they don't have a single that could be Slither.  They don't have one straight ahead hard rocker.  And if CD is that rocker, it comes up short even though I like the song. Better is a damn good tune, but its all over the map to be considered a PURE rocker.  Its more of an epic rocker.  This isn't riff based rock anymore.  That is my main beef.  The songs sound tired and dated as well.  No fresh sounds.  And that is fine, but like Bono said, the lack of direction kills me.  Sometimes Less is more.  We need a stripped down version of this album like when the Beatles released Let It Be Naked.  Some of these guitar solos are fucking sick.  Axl's lyrics are awesome.  Some of his vocals are sensational.  Some of his vocals are a mess.  The songs DON'T stick in my head at all.  Its hard to remember the chorus except to Madagascar and IRS which are toooo repetitive.  The album will sell well for 2 weeks then TANK if this is indicitive of the whole thing.  This album has NO IDENTITY what so ever.   This material beats out some of that on UYI like My World and Shotgun Blues... after that, not many songs these could beat straight up.  I think Better is this albums "Don't Damn Me."  I love Don't Damn Me, sot that's cool with me.  Like Bono, I like song #2 and #3....  But even those are just slightly off.  Like its on fence of being great of average...  Unlike Breakdown, those two just don't get there.

I now too support the Idea this be released at the Axl Rose Band, hire Mike Clink, and do a new album GNR style.

I feel like this album is a dead horse the UYI song describes perfectly what is going on.

yes, doesn't sound the way "this I love" was described, but it sounds cool anyway.
