I have seen a few posts where people refer to these songs as sounding "dated".  I honestly don't remember who it was, or even which thread they were in, so I'm not gonna try to look.  This thread seems like the best place to ask though.

To anyone who thinks these songs sound dated, could you fully explain what you mean?

I get people saying the opening of Chinese Democracy sounds "80's", but other than that I don't get it.  I think these songs don't really sound like anything, and frankly, I think that's more of a liability than an asset.

Sorry to have not cited specific instances of people saying that, but I think they were spread out between threads.

i started listening to gnr for one thing and one thing only - SLASH.   i was 13 or so and appetite had just come out and all i wanted to do was listen to slash and learn to play guitar. over the years i began to appreciate the other musicians in gnr and other bands as i grew up. my point is you cannot say i am biased when i say i this: the gnr leaks blow anything vr has ever done out of the water. vr's songs are not messes because they are not that ambitous. if any other no name band had come up with these songs they never would have made it to the radio. the final mixes will not be for everyone but they will be much deeper and last longer than slither.

I've used the term for years, simply because I've heard so much music that sounds like the so called "breakthrough" sound on these CD sessions.

The Praxis influence(early 90's) is clearly evident here, and the two new songs could have been placed on a Bucket album in 1998. The hip hop stuff is generic, and even the interesting sounds coming from Mother Goose sound straight from the 70s.

Its a mish mash of genres, but they are doing a damn good job at it.

as long as they are not copying another band the importnat thing is that the music is good and the result of hard work.

The "porn" sound in If The World is straight from the late-70s disco era.

Even the '99 OMG has a disco beat in it.

It's always been like that, pick up a general direction to where you're heading (industrial, classic rock...) and blend everything you want into it.

I can't believe what i am reading.  I think hell just froze over.

How the hell can VR be better than these leaks?  Contraband was already written when Scott came in, and then he tried to sing and write for the music, which obviously didn't work too well.  Libertad was one big mess.  Horrible writing, uninspired songs, and a record that really feels like it wasn't taken seriously at all.  Take 4 amazing musicians, and you should get an amazing album.  Didn't happen that way.

Slash, Scott, Duff, and Matt have all written amazing music in their careers.  CB and Libertad definintley were not their best works, not even close.

The Blues is one of the best songs Axl has ever written.  Every single one of BH's solos are amazing.  Robin shines on songs like Better.  Now we get to hear Tommy shine as well.  Huge's work is critical.

So how can VR be better?  Just because of songs like Slither and FTP?

Everyone is going on about how great VR were, and how great Libertad was.  Where the fuck are the hit singles off of that?  That's right, nothing topped their first album that people consider their worst.

I'm amazed right now.  The talent of the band that made these songs is something we haven't seen in a long time.

First of all, a few have taken some time to grow on me, but I really like all the stuff so far.  I'd definitely pull these up on my ipod before choosing a VR song.

Most of this discussion is about the guitars and instrumental work on these tracks, so this comment might very well get lost here, but I wanted to mention something about the vocals.  I love Axl's singing.  Now idea what it is, but something about that guy's voice and the way he sings just does it for me.  I think the guy could release a cover of Mary had a Little Lamb, and I'd find it interesting cause he's singing it. tongue

That said, I think these songs are lacking the "layered Axls" of the past.  Axl harmonizing with himself, and doing that thing he does with his high voice on one channel and the "demon axl" low voice on the other.  I always loved how that sounds and miss it on the new stuff.  I hope some of that will be in the final mixes.  Wouldn't mind some Axl "Ow"s and "Aiyai"s either.

Ok, that makes more sense, I was taking "dated" as songs as a whole... and for exactly the reasons you said, it didn't make sense to me.

Guys, prepare to flame me.  After listening to the leaks again today and enjoying them, I put on Ain't Life Grand by Snakepit.

NOT EVEN FUCKING CLOSE, SERIAL KILLER ALONE OWNS THESE NEW SONGS.  Why?  I can hear guitars.  I can hear drums.  The vocals are mixed perfect.  The songs are not filled with noise and clutter.  Its precise, to the point, filled with great guitar solos.  There is even overproduction with car crashes, music box, hip hop song on mean bone.  But I hear the riffs instantly.

I know what the leaks miss, SEX IN THE GUITAR PLAYING.  Guitar playing with sex and balls that makes your dick hard just hearing it.  Take a song like Landslide or the Truth.  These are average songs, but they are focused and if even predictable, they rock.  GNR is a rock guitar band.  Somewhere the guitars, sans solos, is lost.
