Re: Remember when...
I think the whole Pink rumor was born from her being excited to see Buckethead at the '02 VMA's and then later on she was singing SCOM in her car on some MTV show. I think that planted the seed in some forum funny guys mind that it would be a plausible rumor and they posted it.
Re: Remember when...
Pink is just a big GN'R fan. She even wore the same shirt Axl did in the WTTJ video at the 02 VMAs and sings SCOM at her shows, or at least used to. Sheryl Crow is a big Axl fan, too.
I remember the rumor Axl was going to show up on WWE RAW and slam Vince McMahon and the band was going to play Jungle live.
Re: Remember when...
As for the 2002 VMA's, I hadn't really checked the internet since the Rio III show and afterwards during that period. I knew they were supposed to be touring, but there had been some cancelled shows, and there was some bullshit going on in school life at the time I had to deal with so I hadn't really been aware.
I just happened to watch the VMA's, like I had since I was a kid. I had no clue going in. When it happened, I flipped the fuck out and started running through the house and back. I could NOT believe that it was happening, not to mention Fallon's HUGE big opening, Axl's legendary Jungle scream, the crowd couldn't seem to believe it either.... and then....
You see Axl and the whole thing was just... wtf? Most people the next day on the radio were talking about it, and it was not good. Most didn't even know the band had been rebooted with Axl still fronting, and of course "where was Guns N' Roses? Because I didn't see Guns N' Roses, I saw some Kid Rock-looking dude called Axl Rose and a bunch of other freaky looking guys".
THAT is what the 2002 band was to the world. I know all of the fanboys cum at the thought of this Praxis meets NIN-themed GN'R, but to the world it was a fucking joke and the ride would not have lasted long.
Axl's voice was fucking terrible on Jungle (even for 2002 standards), and the fact he couldn't catch his breath just added to the problems.
Ironically, it actually wasn't all bad. I didn't recognize the middle song at first (still hadn't listened tons to the new Rio III songs, but after this I did) -- I LOVED IT. Axl actually sounded fantastic and was so emotive and looked great during "Madagascar", the Chinese Democracy song of the set. Looking back now, Axl's voice on Madagascar wasn't that good either, but at the time it seemed like he was doing something special.
Show seemed to close strong was at least let them walk out with their dignity, but Axl's comment to John Norris in 2006 of "castastrophe" was spot on.
It was a pinnacle moment for the new Guns, and little did we know they would never ever get back that much press. Because nothing ever happened we THOUGHT would happen after that.
BUT, i'll never forget that short but sweet Madagascar moment, the dude grabbing Axl's hand. It was a short little moment, sandwiched between two crap performances of GN'R classics.
Re: Remember when...
He might, but only geeks pick apart the solo during the event or after the fact.
Most judge on what they see. Like 99%.
If the 2010 band with 1987-throwback Axl voice would've played in 2002, it would've been a "whole new goddamn ballgame" to quote Tremors II.

Fucking loved that moment. The guy must have been so happy that happened. As for Maddy, I thought the performance was great and if look back at the performance sure Axl was off and extremely winded on the GNR songs; but it was still a pretty awesome surprise for MTV and the fans at the time.
