That's sad...although I think his health has been dire for some time hadn't it? Wouldn't want him to suffer.

The brain was the quintessential wrestling manager though.

Absolutely loved his performances as hogan's nemesis in the 1980s.

hahah I wish...

I think this has promise of a good proshot tho. AFD30 audio was good in places, that with pro footage would be fun. I just want Axl to have a half reasonable rasp on the night.

He's usually pretty good first 4-5 songs so at least that much should be cool.

4 won't happen.

I will say though watching the show at Winston-Salem had me longing for the 92 Axl who was winded running around but brought the rasp 100%.

Yeah..it's all about the rasp to me...like I will take any image, any weight level, any haircut whatever...but those songs neeeeeeeed that raspy voice...when he delivers on rasp I forgive anything else.

For example I really like watching the boots of Tokyo 2009 because he had a decent level of rasp, even though it's the ashba band, and even though it was filled through a potato reflecting through a car mirror in 120p resolution...but that rasp....

So yeah...a few Axl screams of rasp will go a long way for me!

#1004 Re: Guns N' Roses » Rock In Rio 2017 | Sept 23 » 452 weeks ago

Hhahah...it's one of those gambles that could go either way.....

I mean Rock In Rio2 is a much loved classic show of the UYI era band, and then Rio3 was iconic in setting up the CD era mystique and is notable for Axl's energetic performance, kicking out fans in the wrong shirts, and the premiere of then new tracks like Madagascar. Indeed that performance of Maddy inspired me to believe there was life post slash and in a bunch of ways probably inspired things in my personal life too.

So it's a special venue for the band.

On the other hand - I thought this way prior to Rio4 in 2011 and built myself up for a GNR show of epic proportions and was rewarded with the Raincoat incident which many on youtube still refer to lovingly as "The Axl Rose Disaster". In all serious it became one of his most uninspired and insipidly disappointing performances ever. In the same way that Rio3 opened up a world of excitement and mystery, Rio4 seemed to usher in an era (prior to the reunion) of lacklustre vocals and the band going through the motions.

So I give you:

My Dream

The band uses the show to premiere live versions of new songs they have written together. Think how Madagascar was in 2001.

My Dream Watered Down to Be Half Realistic

It's a standard show but Axl delivers one of his best performances of the tour rasp wise. He comes out sounding like he did in Houston 2016 which was the best in the reunion so far to me. The video makes for an awesome proshot.

Most Likely Scenario

It's a standard show and Axl doesn't either thrill or depress...he just does what he's been doing recently...half rasp...half mickey/warble. Basically it will be the AFD30 show with video.

Depressing Incident Scenario

Standard show, with even shorter setlist, Axl has a disaster incident ala Rio11, rest of the band has timing issues/mistakes....public uses the footage to bash what GNR has become.

So those are the choices...obviously I'm praying for #1 or #2, but I think #3 is probably most likely...and I don't even wanna countenance #4 big_smile

Well, unlike previous Rock In Rios it isn't the opening show of a tour, so his voice has had time to settle in and he won't be sporting a spare tire after months of inactivity.

Indeed...the first few shows are often a bit rough...so there's a reasonable chance that he'll be in good form.

My dream is he has a really strong night like he did at Houston last year with lots of rasp and they proshot it and we'd finally have something really positive to keep.

(I was kinda disappointed that they released that Vegas Bly-ray as to me that was one of Axl's weaker shows even with the non-slash band)

I wonder what the date is on the 15 second TIL "remix" that leaked?

It was Axl singing over a electronic soundtrack (similar to a child's music box sound from memory). But it was NOT the album vocals - it was in his high raspy voice and with extra "ahhhhs" that were not in the studio cut.

Did Axl sing fresh on that AFTER CD was released? Or was it a case of Brain making something from hundreds of outtakes.

But to the extent you can tell from 15 seconds...it sounded like a much better vocal take than the album version. Lot of rasp.

I wouldn't worry about them running out of time;

I mean, ffs, he still has unused vocal tracks sitting in the vault from 1999 that they could rework.

I hope that's right.

I we know there's some stuff around...apparently this version of Atlas....we know silkworms sounds good....we know there's a killer TIL version with new vocals. But we've waited 17 years for some of that...I don't think they have 17 more to wait....be nice if some of this stuff could be released properly while they are alive...

I wonder about the long term health implications of the kinda like Slash and Duff led...and to a lesser extent Axl...

Going even further, can we expect Axl to make peace with the record company? Can we expect the record company to give into Axl's demands given he isn't a marketable artist anymore? And without a cut of the tour profits?

I think this will be the major problem.

I think the labels would be falling over themselves to make a new GNR record with both Axl and Slash..even a bad selling GNR record will sell more than many of the bands they still back. Sure it won't be like the UYI era top of popular culture era...but if they can sell records from The Darkness and Buckcherry and similar acts then a reunion album is no brainer.

But..they are not going to want to spend a fortune on it given modern sales, and, they would most likely prefer a cut of other revenues or some type of 360 deal.

Meanwhile...Axl and co already have no love for the labels....and are also unlikely to want to work within a budget....and are more likely to want retro style marketing or tour promotion funds and that type of thing....

It's hard too because record companies often ARE assholes, meanwhile we know Axl will shoot himself in the foot rather than back down or do something he doesn't wanna do. Just look at the lame release CD got in the end.

Can we expect Slash and Duff to be enthusiastic about rerecording CDII?

This bit doesn't worry me as much.

They seem of with doing the CD songs live, and in fact, they seem to have put a lot of effort into really owning them for themselves.

So I could see them going into the studio and dismantling the guitar parts around Axl's lyrics and really owning them too.

I think Axl would be cool with it too considering he was letting DJ and Bumble do the same thing with CD after it came out and toying with a re-release.

Of course the risk is that it's too industrial for slash even if he rocked it up, but you'd think maybe that could be fixed by letting him add 1 or 2 new songs of Slash/Duff origin to go with it.

In a world where Slash plays This I Love, Chinese Democracy, Catcher in the Rye and Better all the time...I can see him rocking out versions of Axl's other albums. He might prefer it to doing nothing too....like sure he can go back to SMKC for a fun smaller scale tour for a year or two....but what then...it will be time for more GNR....

My worry is they are going to run out of time though, simply because they take the time with projects as if they are 20 year olds when they're in their 50s or whatever now.

Hmmm....can't say that one inspired me much...i'm hoping there's something somewhere on the album I like though....I liked a few tracks from Pale Emperor so I believe he can write songs I like still.
