Very sad news.
I was really only a causal soundgarden fan compared to the hardcores on here - but I was a big fan of his work in Audioslave and his solo stuff too.
Such a rare voice, so powerful, so much tone, such unique melodies and such a beautiful lyricist.
He gave so much to us.

The thing to me was that Rio3 was a magical show. Debuting new tunes and the first real video of the new band. It was all so exciting. Of course Rio2 was also awesome...so I was one of those people who thought Rio4 was going to feature something special. Maybe a reinvigorated Axl or some new songs or something. Then it turned out to be a lackluster show to say the least.
Hope Rio5 delivers!

The AFD/LIES tracks on the GH were remastered and they sound fantastic,
I was not aware of that! I don't have GH cos I already had all the songs (Sympathy single etc). I should get a copy.

Agreed.
Although I can see an option where if they only had 1 or 2 new songs this could be a way to reinvigorate the tour without the pressure for a full album - just piggy back it to an AFD remaster.
So like
Disc 1 - AFD Remaster
Disc 2 - 2 New Songs and Some B Side Stuff (Shadow of Your Love etc)/ Live Stuff
Then a collectors pack with a 3rd disc of a DVD of Ritz or some type of AFD era show or something.
Then launch it in support of another 18 months of touring etc. The show can be mostly AFD cos it's the aniversary..and the 1 or 2 new songs shuts up the media.

Here's some options off my head - you could mix and match any of these:
1. Just a pretty cover
2. Remastered Original Recording
3. Redux Recording - new versions - Perhaps Axl's 99 FinkAFD vocals with new Slash and Duff or some other frankensteined version.
4. Old Demos of Released Songs (YCBM, NR, AFD songs from the era)
5. Old Demos of never released stuff (cornshucker etc)
6. Released but kinda rare stuff - B Sides - Shadow of your love etc
7. old demos we have never heard (do these exist?)
8. CD era songs remixed or redux with slash and duff
9. New modern band single or new EP song
10. Live versions of AFD tracks
11. DVD of 87 era stuff
12. DVD of troubadour reunion
That's all the options I can think of.....I wonder which it will be!!!

Actually I think the 'multiple disc' thing is the special vinyl turntable slip matt stuff.
Still it does imply a 30th version is happening.

I assume all this 30 years stuff is going someplace.....

This is exciting. Looks like multiple disc.

I respect you feel that way!
You're not alone. Basically all of Australia where I live agrees, I got the impression Axl would agree too lol.
For me...I dunno...I have absolutely nothing against Bon...but I got into Ac/Dc listening to Brian...he has such a distinctive tone...and it's not like they didn't make any memorable tunes under him....thunderstruck et al....
Anwyays...I just feel Brian cops a lot of shit for not being Bon when basically he's amazing himself.

I think the older Axl gets the less expectations there are.
Once artists are in mid 50s, then 60s and 70s the expectation is always "well, they aren't young anymore but this doesn't entirely suck". Think of records by Aerosmith and Ac/Dc and similar acts. There's always the reviewers who shit pan it going on about how this isn't the 70s and 80s and the last 5 records sucked, then there's the reviewers who will call it a return to form.
Importantly, I just don't think anyone cares anymore, Axl's history is too big to fail now. Like all you have to do is look at the CD era. In 30 years or so he put out one record in a mostly different genre with a different band, and yet he's still welcomed with loving open arms back into the mainstream press for the reunion tour. No one cares -they just love old GNR. They could do a new record and it could suck - and the pundits will come out of the woodwork and be like "well, it's been shit since Izzy walked" or it could be genius and they'll write about how Axl has always been the last of the rock gods. But it doesn't really matter cos the pop crowed will ignore it and the rock crowed will go out and listen to it whatever happens. So like what is the real pressure these days? No one really expects a guy in his 50s is going to drop AFD2 now.
As for Axl/Dc - Axl was pretty happy to just record without writing for Sebastian on Angel Down. Although I get the impression Bon Scott is close to his heart so he'd be keen to do it well - I can imagine it might be easier to not have to write a full album of pre-prepared riffs.
For the record, Brian before his current hearing issues, was one of the top front men of all time. It's such an urban legend that Ac/Dc was only good with Bon, brian was damn well killer.

Angus wrote the last Ac/Dc record including the lyrics.
I see this as a positive for Axl, he can contribute something if he has a Eureka moment but he will not be expected to come up with lyrics for 12 guitar based songs off the cuff.
I could imagine that Axl/Dc would be given priority for the next project.
