You think it was that they approached him for guest spots (ie Steven) and he wanted the full time gig, or that he wanted the split Slash and Duff were getting for the guest spot?

If it were me it probably would have degenerated well before getting into the actual details like that.

It's an absolute guess but bet would be Izzy considers the real GNR as the AFD 5, wants to go back to that, and thus have 1/5th of everything like he would have in 1987.

As you guys know I'm a fortus fan, and I don't think Izzy is necessary other than for songwriting, however can see his point in some ways - he co-wrote the songs and co-founded the band and they didn't have much success without him for 30 years - if they want him back bring him back on the old terms. I can see the logic.

Then again I can also see the Axl/Slash position - in the big picture almost no one really cares if he's there or not - they cut him in and it costs them literally millions, and it just raises all kinds of problems.

Interesting theory but to be honest I can't really tell.

The most apparent thing to me about Axl's face is how altered it has looked since some form of cosmetic work circa 2001.

Love the guy and his singing, but the alterations have aged pretty strangely and it sets off my uncanny valley.

#1273 Re: Guns N' Roses » Izzy tweet about Axl and Duff interview » 505 weeks ago

The other problem for Izzy is that if there's no songwriting going on - but just performing old songs - there's not a lot to differentiate one rhythm player from another in the way the songs sound.

Slash is an identifiable lead guitarist. You hear his solo and you can tell when it's him playing. Axl is an identifiable lead singer, you hear his voice and you know it's him. These are the things that make a GNR song identifiable as a GNR song on the radio and not some other hard rock act.

Fundamentally, swap out the singer or the lead guitar and a GNR song will sound like a cover version, but swap out the rhythm player and good luck finding anyone who could tell in a blind audio test.

Something like Sweet Child of Mine has simple chords of D, C, G and so on....it sounds like that whether Izzy plays them, or Gilby plays them, or Richard plays them, or if they invited in Eric Clapton to do it. The rhythm part simply does not allow for a lot of distinctive performance style to shine through.

Worse than that - to the very limited extent that it does - IE that a player can voice a simple chord in a more complex way - or the rhythm guy will do an occasional lead break to trade off with Slash - then Izzy doesn't have the best chops for it. Bottom line - Izzy wrote the songs in the song book, but if you're just playing songs from the book - then no one can even tell who is playing and if they could - they will hear fortus play it better than the guy who wrote it. Sad but true.

So Izzy has limited barging power as there's basically no audible difference if he's there or not until they decide to write something new.

I look at it like this:

If you are Izzy. You co-founded the band and you co-wrote some of the most successful songs that the band has relied on for 30 years. Then the guys you created the band with offer you a gig where they want to redo the songs of the past again, and have you there to add to the legitimacy of doing that. They've been offered and will make millions and millions of dollars each. They'll give you just a few thousand. You tell them no thanks.

If you are Slash, Axl, Duff. You have been offered tens of millions of dollars for a handful of nights work. The money is contingent on you 3 showing up but it doesn't matter to the offer who else comes. If you cut in Izzy you get a little bit more street-cred with the hardest of hardcore fans, but essentially, the end of the war between Axl and Slash will take precedence amongst almost all concert goers and for the media. Having Izzy there as an equal will literally cost you millions of dollars each - for no reason other than impressing hardcores - who you long ago realised will always find something else they don't like. So you will lose millions to have him there and what will you gain? You will once again be working with a person who is notorious for bailing on projects before they are completed. Just like he did with GNR, VR, some of his solo bands, the hall of fame, and basically almost everything he's been known to get involved in. So you're taking on that risk yet costing yourself literally millions of dollars to have that new problem. No thanks.

So it's not in either party's interest to reunite. Other than for Friendship. But let's face it - this band stopped being about that many many years ago when Adler was fired if not even earlier.

If this stuff happens we should get some amazing proshot videos.

I don't see it as any less honourable than any other profession. Lets face it almost all employment is about doing things for money.

Sure, someone having sex with you out of love is a wonderful thing, but that doesn't mean there's any real harm in someone else doing it for a job.

Just like if my wife bakes me a cake out of love it's a wonderful thing, but that doesn't make bakers who make cakes for people bad people.

#1277 Re: Guns N' Roses » San Diego » 506 weeks ago

I personally think GNR could have reunited in 2005 if it wasn't for Beta turning away slash. It makes you think.

As for these comments, on one hand she's right about this stuff, on the other hand getting into flame wars with fans is not Ac/DC style and I doubt angus wants that type of publicity.

The first negative media article I saw about Axl being in Ac/Dc was caused by those comments. Well done.

#1278 Re: Guns N' Roses » San Diego » 506 weeks ago

Normally I like Phil Rudd but he's way off base with those comments about Axl.

Axl is totally nailing these parts and doing (more than) justice to both Bon and Brian....and I say that as a massive fan of Brian in particular.

But Axl is just smashing this out of the park...so it's insane for someone not to "rate" him....I mean realistically I think Axl is probably the only person who could have pulled this off - very high quality covers with a star power charisma of his own that makes it still seem like an original act and not just a covers tribute.

Rudd is great...but basically he's dead wrong here.

Another interesting point is he clearly doesn't want back in as he also made a potshot at Malcolm - which is untouchable in AC/DC circles to fans and the band themselves I would bet.

I mean supposedly he wants back in Ac/Dc but then he takes a potshot at the singer who is saving the day, thus attempting to undermine credibility of the current shows, then he takes a stab at the founder of the band, a man who is currently in care for dementia, and who is the brother of the current leader of the band?

I don't see that as the way back in 16

#1279 Re: The Sunset Strip » Metallica new song 'Hardwired', new album Nov. 18th » 507 weeks ago

I want to like it but I just kinda can't get into it.

Usually I like Lars drumming a lot, I'm not a hater of his, but something about the drums in this song irritate me. I like a few of the guitar riffs in the middle, but then I agree with Alex that overall the vocals seems sort of childish and the whole thing feels forced.

Reminds me of a potential song being jammed by a band that hasn't yet worked out what they want to do with it and it's not quite working yet.

Hopefully the album has stuff that's more developed and nuanced.

I believe they can still do great stuff, but to me this one feels sort of rushed and not quite right.

yeah between this election and the GNR reunion and then Axl/Dc I'm not sure if things are real anymore ; wink
