#1391 Re: The Sunset Strip » Public apology to bono » 802 weeks ago

Well to try and get this thread back on somewhat of a U2 theme.

I went and saw U2 here in Perth last Saturday night.  I was actually pretty wary about it since I had seen some clips on the news the week or so before fom either the Sydney or Melbourne show.  The short grab of the show they played both my wife and I both said "he sounds terrible".

Anyhow, the show we got was bloody good and I didn't really detect any problems with his voice either, it sounded great.  He interacted with the crowd a lot, made a few jokes about the English cricketers who are over here for the Ashes at the moment.  He even likened himself to David Boon (the keg on legs) which got the crowd chanting Boonie Boonie - was pretty funny.  For those that don't know Boonie was an Australian Batsman (cricketer) back in the 80's.  But his biggest claim to fame was breaking Doug Walters record (another Aussie cricketer) for the number of beers consumed on a flight from Sydney to London.  Walters record was 44 and Boonie drank 52. (These are proper cans of beer too 375mls and full strength ~4.8% alcohol.  Not your little 355mls cans around 3.5%-4%you girls get in the USA 16 )

I thought the whole Claw setup looked very impressive.  Although it didn't appear as though the used all the ramps and walkways anywhere near as much as I thought they would.  They predominantly seemed to stay near the centre, together.  Maybe I'm used to Axl and Co. continually pacing all around every area of the stage.

The crowd really got involved too with some of the songs which really helped.  There is nothing better than a whole stadium chanting/singing along to songs like Sunday Bloody Sunday, Where the Streets Have no Name etc.

The only downer bit for me was the song they finished on, Moment of Surrender (I had to look this song up after, I never really listened much to the No Line on the Horizon album).  It just felt like he could have finished the concert on a more universally popular number with full crowd interaction.  But that aside I thought it was a great gig and would go see them again.  He had seen them once before on the Popmart tour back in 1998 so I wasn't a total U2 live virgin.

This was the setlist:

1.Return Of The Stingray Guitar
2.Beautiful Day

It's good that he's talking but WTF was that?  It didn't read like an interview to me.  Where were the questions?

Yeah I can work that out either.  Is that one sentance what they are calling the interview?

Well Bono I'm off to the U2 concert this Saturday night.  It's exactly one week after the GNR concert here, so I should be able to get a nice comparison on how Bono's voice currently compares to the No. 1 man.  I'll report back for ya 16

Axl said at the Perth gig that Tommy had just flown back in from a funeral of a family member (or the close relation of a family member can't recall exactly).  I presume he flew out of Oz after the Adelaide gig, went to the funeral and then flew back to Perth just in time for the concert.

He looked a mess when I saw him, I would imagine he is going through a pretty dark time the poor guy, hence the possible reasons for the tweets.

August '96, to be exact. He mentions the Slash's Blues Ball show to be held in Budapest.

He also claims that yesterday, the band "concealed" their contract. I have no clue what that means....

"We signed some document that we'd agree to have put in escrow for a certain amount of time to see if we could work things out. [...] I was forced into a secondary role, while Axl was now offically at the helm if I officially let the escrow contract become effective." (Slash, Autobiography)

In this case, escrow likely means "an arrangement where an independent trusted third-party receives and disburses money and/or documents for two or more transacting parties, with the timing of such disbursement by the third-party dependent on the performance by the parties of agreed-upon contractual provisions".

Axl in one end, Duff and Slash in the other, with a third party in between to ensure a new record is made on Axl's terms.

Hmm I missed that quote when reading his book.  What was Slasn and Duff's payoff for signing the contract, i.e. what end of the bargain was Axl supposed to hold up I wonder in order to release the contract from escrow?

that sounds pretty daunting.... 9

That sounds to me like different parts of a song added together rather than one long intro.  One part may be the intro to The General but other parts (as others have suggested) could be part of the layers of tracks under the vocals etc throughout the song and they have just shunted them together to make the intro music for the concerts.

True most people would probably just laugh.  But you would cop a mountain of shit for it too.
