I watched [rec] (2007) yesterday.  Interesting enough Spanish horror film.  Didn't really care for the handheld camera shooting style, but it is an interesting film.  I think it does add to the chaotic nature of the film  Remade into Quarantine which was released last year or so.  [rec 2] was released on dvd earlier this year.

Terrible movie that goes a long way in exposing Tarantino as a one trick pony, possibly even a hack. Apart from the cinematography and a good performance by Waltz there are few redeeming qualities in this overindulgent waste of celluloid.

The characters are paper thin and their motivations embarrassingly childish. All that happens from the first scene to the last gives the impression of being nothing more than a vehicle for a deluded film maker to showcase his self percieved coolness with gore, tacky humor and endless out of the place "homages" to classical art, before we reach the over the top climax making Tony Montana look like a down to earth and controlled personality in comparison.

The so called protagonists are just as vile, evil and unreasonable as the nazi's, perhaps even more so. But being that they are fighting the unchallenged evil doers in the history of Universe, the Nazi's, this is not only justified, it's "cool". A WWII film making you root for Hitler is nothing less than the definition of Epic Fail.

Tarantino should take his shallow cartoon characters and put them in his fictional universes where they actually work on an artistic level.

Having sat through this one in the theater, I will agree with you on the most part.  There is far too much talk in this one even for a Tarentino film.  I liked the middle section of the film involving Shossana only because there was an actual attempt at character development.  The Diane Kruger character was pretty laughable imo.  This is an over the top film but for me it was just so painfully slow and the runtime at like 140 minutes or so makes it even more so.

Another problem here is that he just tries to cram too much shit into the film.  We've got the Waltz character, the Shosana storyline, Bridget Hammersmark, and the entire bastards plus some cameos too.  There is barely any background info on the Inglorious Basterds.  We get scant information and nothing else.

I get the feeling that Tarentino blew his wad on his first two films.  After that he's pretty much relied on known actors and excessive violence plus marginally "cool" dialogue + mannerisms to cover for the weak stories.  He is similiar to DePalma in that both guys pay obvious "homages" to other better sources.

The Kill Bill films drew a big infleunce from Thriller (a 1974 Swedish film) and Tokyo Drifter (60s Japanese film).

I like his enthusiasm for underlooked films that are mostly foreign.  He gave a really funny intro on a Battle Royale promo.  But outside of that I have very little interest in watching any of his newer output.  I say this as a fan of his films (the first two primarily).  FWIW, Kill Bill 3 has been greenlit and should be released in 2014.

Ghost World (2001)

Great film.  Funny cameo from "Babu" in Seinfeld.  The really weird thing is that looking at the filmography, Thora Birch's career nosedived after this one (mostly straight to dvd stuff) while Scarlett Johannson's took off.

Too bad because Birch and Steve Buschemi are great here and Johannson does a passable job as Rebecca, although she is a little too wooden in her role.  I wonder whether or not she'll ever top her "Lost in Translation" performance.

I'm going to watch [rec] next.

The problem MLB will have in implementing expanded replay is determining how far to tweak the system.  Home Run Calls are around in the system, and I assume close plays at first, second, third, and home plate are probably in store after the Galarraga missed call.  Now do you expand this some more to close plays down the line (fair or foul ball) or not?

I really think that the umpires should have huddled up and discussed the controversial play (they do this sometimes with home runs).  I don't expect them to do anything regarding the strike zone that would be taking replay too far.

Even with the recent bad press, MLB still doesn't have the worse refs in the major sports, that distinction still goes to the NBA.

I'll download it later; almost downloaded it when it hit the scene.  Since you brought up the topic, what other movies from Miike do you recommend?  I'm tempted to download Gozu (2003) only because it sounds so weird.

I finally picked up Thirst though and will be watching it soon.

I watched The Final a couple days ago. A film from that After Dark horror fest. Basically about these teens getting revenge on some bullies. I like the concept, but it falls flat and too much potential wasted. The girl that's bullied is miscast as she would fit in with the clique that harasses her. They should have cast a geeky looking chick in the role.

Don't remember the name of that one bully, but she is the worst actress I've ever seen. Her friends are getting tortured literally a few feet away and she shows no emotion whatsoever. Unbelievable that she was cast in the film.

I wanted to throw my tv out the window during the scene where they rip off Audition.

Which Audition scene did they rip off?

Thursday (1998) Funny violent drug film with Thomas Jane, Mickey Rourke, Aaron Echkhart.  Paula Porkoziva (spelling?) had a couple of great scenes (and gets nude too!).

I used to get a lot of those but since registering with the DNC thing they have reduced significantly.  What still stinks is that the credit card I have sometimes still calls and tries to offer their shitty overpriced products in deceptive fashion.

Regarding the solicitors, I usually get the religious types but what I noticed works really well is to just look like you just got out of bed.  That way they go away quickly since you look all tired and stuff.  Prentending you have some minor illness (a cold) works as well.

#1429 Re: Guns N' Roses » Axl fires back at Irv with lawsuit » 834 weeks ago

Axl does make some good points on the entire merger anti-trust violations on the Tickemaster/Live Nation.  However,  I am still baffled as to why he didn't can Azoff earlier if he was this unhappy following the GH Activision or any of the stuff following Chinese Democracy.  If he was that miserable, he should have just had hired new management instead.

The lack of video content shouldn't be blamed on Azoff either (ie the Better video) as I'm pretty sure putting together a bunch of live clips don't cost that much.

I think that while he does have some valid complaints,  Azoff is also a convient guy for Axl to blame some of his troubles on.

They're also redoing "Real Genius" the 1980s cult Val Kilmer film.  And I think a sequel to Wall Street.
