I think the main problem with that song is not the voice, but Eric Dover's way of using his voice. He's got good pipes but he lacks the Axl factor on how exactly to make it sound special. On this song the AI can replicate the sound of Axl but not the dynamics if that is the right word.
Question is if the AI will ever be able to replicate subtle things like that.
I doubt it. It's why I think it'll predominantly be used in studio or live settings to give a little boost to the dynamics of a singer's voice, using that singer's voice as a "guide." Kind of like how de-ageing VFX is applied to an actor's face; it's easier to work with the existing bone structure and muscle movements than plop a mask of an actor over some other actor's face.
Compare, say, de-aged Harrison Ford in the new Indiana Jones trailer:
which was achieved by placing Young Harrison Ford's face over Old Harrison Ford and using his muscles and bone structure to guide the VFX…
…to resurrected Peter Cushing in Rogue One:
which was achieved by 3D scanning an old face cast of Peter Cushing and then dropping it over a different actor's performance.
I could very easily see the tech bods training up an AI model using the best-quality, isolated studio vocals of Axl from the 1980s and 1990s, and then applying that as a subtle effect layer over 2023 Axl's vocals. Taking the dynamics of modern Axl's voice and buffing them slightly with his old rasp. Probably in-studio initially, but as the technology matures it could be used in a live setting too. No one would be any the wiser, and it'd become one of those industry secrets that no-one talks about, like the way <famous aging drummer> allegedly has a session guy play his parts backstage while he mimes along, at concerts.

I don't know what Roy Thomas Baker problem was when he told Axl he had no hits. I'm listening to the 98 mix of CD (song) and to me that's a fucking hit in 2000. The Blues is a hit. Catcher could be a hit. Those songs were ruined in production.
Roy Thomas Baker telling Axl he didn't have any hits is arguably the reason for the whole fucking mess. Those tracks were perfectly good at the time, and the knock to Axl's confidence prompted the next few years of navel-gazing and self-doubt and reworking and over-production.

Just watched some of that. Not too shabby.
Unfortunately....92-93 GNR no longer floats my boat although I loved it at the time....and I spent thousands on all those overpriced bootlegs in the mid-late 90s.
I blow hot and cold on the bloated excesses of Gilby-era GN'R, the horn sections, the costume changes during Civil War etc. I would love to see a proper release from those 1993 shows where Izzy briefly returned to the band, though.

Yep, especially the first album. Contraband has aged much much better than CD has.
I can still put it on and listen from start to finish and thoroughly enjoy it all of it, even the lesser songs.
While CD certainly has its moments as an album, the lows on there are pretty bad and I find it difficult to listen all the way through these days.
If Axl could put his ego aside, and considering the state of his voice, which Velvet Revolver songs do you think he could perform really well on this tour?
Even one or two would show the world that he has truly made peace with Duff and Slash, refresh the set list, and give fans something exciting to look forward to.
I mean, pretty much any of them, since Scott's vocal range is well within Axl's capabilities. Realistically they'd probably go for the most famous tracks – Fall to Pieces, Set Me Free, Do It For The Kids, etc.

What we need is a proper remaster, but won't happen with the reunion band. Perhaps the best thing would be to compile a whole new album with Slash and Duff, using songs from CD and from "CD II", and then make that the last GN'R album. In a sense that would be similar to a hypothetical late 90s, early 00s GN'R album.
The problem I have with that is... they have Slash, and Duff, and Fortus, and Melissa and Dizzy in the band. All songwriters with credits to their name, all more than capable of putting together a decent song. It is such a ridiculous waste of their talents – and, frankly, insulting to them – to have the only material to come out of the band be rehashed leftovers from 20-odd years ago, which they had nothing to do with writing.

As a final adieu, do you think that Mr. Rose finally realized what an incompetent fuck-up he was in 2008 after the two self-sabotaged big payday reunion attempts and his soft blacklisting from the industry or how else do you explain his psychotic break and subsequent stay in the loony bin? Oh, you thought he just vanished from doing promo for no reason?
Well, to the best of my knowledge Axl hasn't used someone's mental health as a stick to beat them with, which makes him a better person than you, at least.

I've always loved Josh Freese's drums on the Village Sessions version of "Hard School," so I quickly threw this version together that combines Josh's drums with all of the other parts from version released in 2001.
