But notice... the positions opened got filled. The positions that were NOT open, kept their people. Richard has been at rhythm guitar since 2001 (15 years) with occasional guest appearence by Izzy Stradlin. That will not change imo. Frank has been there since 2006 (10 years), and was not leaving.

I see what you are saying but don't forget GNR does sweet fuck-all between tours. It's not like a regular band where the band with a partnership where everyone would meet up and plan and discuss strategy. It's like how we know Ac/Dc's brian didn't hear from Angus for 4 years until he got a call going "hey, wanna sing again?" He replied "What? With you guys? Ok".

When we talk about positions being open it makes it sound like GNR is active most of the time and these people are going into work. However we know full well that many of the members have no or very limited communication with Axl other than when it's about time to go on tour again. They generally only know of vague plans until the very last minute. This means they have to pursue side projects and other work to make a living.

Which means basically - any time there's a 2-3 year gap you get the chance of someone "leaving" in the sense they might not come back. I assume playing with the real band will motivate Frank to stay for some more years. But at the same time...like Brain, Robin etc...I wouldn't be surprised if he one day bailed for other musical work if the band takes another long break after this tour.

Remember something, Tommy "The General" Stinson is the man who re-introduced Duff McKagan to the GN'R material, as well as taught him the Chinese licks. Not the other way around.

Umm.......Are you implying Tommy taught Duff the AFD/UYI songs?

Not to be all PC, but I also really like the idea of GN'R have two black guys, and an Asian (i'm assuming) female in the band.

But it makes Guns more diverse

I'm not against it, but for discussion, in this situation what's the benefit of diversity? To help moderate Axl's lyrics?

Or maybe MSL will get a little letter from Izzy's lawyers.

I think I need top 10 bands as the top 5 (in no order) are: GNR, Nu-GNR, Snakepit, Slash Solo, VR.

So basically all GNR wink

IMO they get a free pass on a new album in 2016. One new song this year would be incredible. 2017 is when fans will really know what direction this whole thing is headed. If we get no new material in 2017 then yeah...it had nothing to do with releasing music.

I have no objection to them making cash, all bands make cash.

But I do think if the media is going to go with a "they're back" approach for them to be "back" they have to do something new musically.

I can't really explain what I mean. In 1991 Duff played attitude because he loves punk, and Slash played the godfather to get that soulful blues happening. It was organic based on their influences and their personalities. But today - in 2016 - if they play them it's because they once played them in 1991. But I want to know what slash's soul thinks now.....I mean obviously some recreation of hits is desirable, sensible and inevitable....

but for this band to be "back" they need to recapture the spontaneity, and do some new works or there's little point.

They've moved past their prime, but they still got enough juice to teach us something i'm sure....but the time is NOW.....2017 has side projects and an international tour planned already!

I hear you on the bit about new music.

I think what the reunion needs is to drop a single or preferably an album.

I was thinking yesterday. It needs something fresh and some innovation.

Like in a way it's shit-cool that Slash played the godfather that was a classic sequence every time back in the day. But that's kinda also the lame bit kinda - like rather than have the spirt and the kickassness that made cool ideas like the godfather happen first time around, they're just replicating those specific set pieces.

To really blow the world away again they need to record.

#1817 Re: The Garden » The Wrestling thread » 527 weeks ago

I've been thinking for a while that what we need is LESS.

I think WWE's product is just spread too thin. There's just too much time to fill for the content and the end effect is a lessening of quality.

I find RAW way too long. By the end of the show they're flashing back to a replay of something that they already replied earlier and happened at the start of the show. You sometimes see the same happening like 3 or 4 times on the one night.

I know many feel there's too much talk to the wrestling as well. I actually enjoy some talk to make the characters and so on - but again this comes down to running time for me. Guys come out and talk for 20 minutes to say something that could have been said in 5.

To me it would be like if you took the plot of an episode of a TV series and then doubled or tripled the running time but didn't add new story. The same things happen. They just have to happen slower. It would ruin that series. It's the same principle. Basically we have 12 ppvs a year where stuff needs to be in place for - but we now have hours and hours of between time content to fill up and very little story to put in it.

I'd make raw WAY shorter. Keep it punchy and fast paced. I think the show would then be a lot more interesting. Which I think would make the next generation more interesting, which I think would make the PPVs more interesting.

Me personally, I happen to think AFD > UYI
I also happen to think CD > UYI (as seperate albums only)
So for now... Frank ftw

Two problems with this:

Firstly, lets go with the premise that you are right and the CD songs are better than the UYI songs. That's highly debatable, but assuming for a moment that they are, there's no way that it would be because of the drum parts. Lets say a person like Madagascar better than Estranged, I can't possibly imagine it would be because of the drumming. Chinese Democracy is full of horrible 8 bit sounding drum loops followed by average as hell sounding forgettable irrelevant drum parts. Where's the air drum moment? For all that they redid them bunches of times while recording in the roof of a mosque or whatever it was it hasn't worked. Chinese is an album with great songs and terrible production and the drums didn't escape that issue.

Secondly, even if somehow one thinks the drum parts on Chinese Democracy were its highlight....Frank only plays on three songs. I think it's actually more like 2.5 with the drum editing going on.

So your premise that CD is better than UYI and therefore Frank is the best drummer just doesn't add up to me.

#1819 Re: Guns N' Roses » Your Outrageous Guns N' Roses Predictions » 528 weeks ago

I've come up with another outrageous one:

When AFD is re-released soon (I'd assume 2017 for the 30th but you never know - could be a year late knowing GNR) it will not only have the remaster many want but it will have ALL NEW AXL VOCALS - possibly from his fabled 2009 re-record of AFD with nu-guns.

I don't think he'll put out the full nu-gns re-record - but I can imagine a mix of 1987 band sounds with 1999 Vocals.

Dizzy Reed is in the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame, no different than Matt Sorum whom everyone beats off to.

Ok firstly....you didn't originally compare Dizzy to Matt (I'd entertain an analysis along those lines) - you said that Dizzy was equivalent to SLASH in terms of his importance.

Slash has become THE player of his entire generation, he plays the solos on AFD which is not only GNR's best selling record, it's known for having some of the most important guitar solos in MUSIC HISTORY. Slash's entire stage image has become iconic. I could go on and on but it's absurd to, especially in this era where GNR is again all about the return of Slash and I'm sitting here pointing out that his position as lead guitarist in a famous hard rock guitar band is more important than an additional keyboardist (to Axl).

I'm not here to bash Dizzy. I actually happen to quite like the guy. Like i'm sure many here I've met him and he seemed cool, and he's been in the band for ages, and he plays on some records I like. So i'm not trying to diminish Dizzy.

I'm just saying you can't say he's equivalent to Slash.

Dizzy doesn't really have a public consciousness "sweet child of mine solo" like slash. In fact the piano parts that most know in GNR like November Rain are actually played by Axl - and low and behold - what's the iconic moment in that clip - oh yeah - Slash out the front of a church wink

Again though Dizzy is cool, no issue with Dizzy, just saying it seemed silly to me to equate him to Slash. He deserves to be in the hall of fame and he is - but he is not anywhere near as important to the GNR legacy as Slash - nor will be ever will be - if Slash quit again tomorrow and Dizzy stayed another 20 years - that won't change....additional keyboardist just isn't as important as lead guitarist....

I also want to point out with the continual passive-aggressive Frank bashing, that Matt Sorum has never written material that got him street cred in the rock community (he ain't Don Henley & Phil Collins), and Sorum has never, ever, been able to keep a job in a rock band (mainly 'cause he's a uber tube steak).

Well I admit I'm a fan of sorum. But trust me for all the Frank bashing of late there's always a ton more Sorum bashing.

As to your point I think it's legal bullshit.

I went on about this in another thread. But copyrights in songs is usually attributed to who wrote the lyrics, and who wrote the music melodies. Drum parts do not usually attract copyright. The exception to this is when bands have a partnership agreement to divide copyright amongst themselves - many do this to keep things civil and to be fairer to the bass players and drummers. Good example is AFD - steven has his 1/5th share of copyright even though we all know he only wrote the drums not the melodies - but the band back then was more of a brotherhood. By Matt's era it was more about business.

So...sure Matt didn't write the songs on the legal basis. But a good example is YCBM. Legally it's written by Izzy and Axl. That's cos they wrote the lyrics and melody. But we all know matt contributed that awesome drum intro...and how distinctive is that...it basically makes the song....

So i'm a bit tired of the "matt didn't write anything" arguments people keep saying. From the very first drum hit on "Right Next Door to Hell" he is all over those Use Your Illusion albums.

I think Frank is a good dude and he's obviously a capable drummer, but I disagree with your concept that he's the best ever, I think Matt is a far better match to the bands hard rock sound.
