#11 Re: Guns N' Roses » Unseen footage Pro Shot - Saskatoon, SK, Ca 1993 » 373 weeks ago
Wow, is it wrong that THIS is the most exciting thing i've seen since GN'R reunited? I always wanted a pro-shot from the Skin N' Bones years and never thought it'd see the light of day. Not only did it, one could argue this might be the best GN'R show in pro-shot form from that era.
This is amazing. Especially watching pro-shots of stuff like The Garden. This might be the best, purest Axl-vocals ever recorded in this quality. It's a shame that Indiana 1991 show isn't in this quality. Chicago 1992 is amazing, but I think deep down inside, my heart belongs to Indiana '91. Maybe that's because the Mark III band was when I was introduced to Guns. But that '91 band was slicker than the '87 band, but there was still an element of danger within the band. Axl seemed shot out of a cannon in alot of those show, and unpredictable. By the time they did the '92 shit with the Let's Spend The Night Together/Stones-version of GN'R, as cool as it was, wasn't cool at all to a 1992 audience that the closest they got to hair metal was W.A.S.P.'s Crimson Idol (which isn't even close to being glam). Most had moved on to Alice In Chains & Soundgarden.
Kudos to the liberators. Bless Them as Madagascar says...
Looks like shit but still performing at top level. Total BOSS. Some folks here prefer the 2002 or 2006 band to this??? Fuck off with that shit. Amazing band!!
I completely agree with you. People kinda forget the raw awesomeness of the old era and what that band was. Even in it's stripped down 1993 form with with Gilby. I saw clips on YouTube, and like Wags said seeing this is like seeing Jordan in his prime. But then YouTube recommended the Rio 2017 show, Rocket Queen specifically... ugh. I love the band out there today... but... ugh. They look fucking terrible compared to 1993 Guns.
I had listened to current-Axl for so long, think AC/DC or that awesome Forum show last Thanksgiving, and you get so used to modern-Axl for so long, that when you see something like this with prime-era Axl...
You are reminded how one of a kind and amazing, legendary frontman Axl was in his prime.

Shadow sounds so much better that some fans thought they had added music/vocals to it.
All these demos in HQ is going to be amazing.
I don't believe them.
Not the first time they've lied. Only way I don't believe them is if this version of Shadow was a completed, ready-to-go studio track for inclusion on one of the Use Your Illusion records during those sessions. Alot of the productions, both Slash's guitar and Axl's vocals, especially the obvious added parts (Axl's voice sounded different from AFD-era to UYI-era), is that they touched this up for Illusion, and ultimately left it off and it's been sitting in this vault all these years in completed form.
There's no way that's the original 1986-87 take (like Steven's comment of Axl's one take walk-in story). Not a goddamn chance. There's tons of work on this song from the multiple demos i've heard over the years. That... or there's tons of takes out there and certain people were involved in certain ones. The Duff, Izzy & Steven parts sound raw, and pretty much the same in every version (minus the Tracii Guns/Gilby Clarke remix). It's the Axl & Slash parts i'm calling shenanigans on.
Touched up, or lost Illusion studio track. AFD-era... not a fucking chance. They're bullshitting.

Really?
I actually was never big on the song, and understood completely why it was axed from AFD.
Until this 2018 version.
This thing kicks ass, and I actually think is much more ferocious and aggressive than the original demo. Then again, some people just love that whole garage band thing... never been my thing. Garage bands are nobodies without good production. jmho. So yeah, if people love that garage band/cassette tape sound, they might want to check out the Hollywood Rose-version instead.

New Chains. Embedded. Dig it.

So what's the verdict on this Shadow of Your Love?
New guitars? Definitely different version of guitars, if not new.
Vocals? Probably old pro-tooled vocals.
Personally I think the guitars are completely re-done. That sounds like Slash's modern-era tone, and the mix makes an explicit point to really prop up the guitar intro. I think they're new, plus the new solo.
Axl's vocals sound sweetened. I think they are mostly re-mastered original mix, but the finishes sound sweetened, specifically the outro. I would not be shocked if he backed his old vocal with new vocals in a higher pitch, lower, backing it ala Def Leppard-layering. The outro really sounds like Axl might've went in-studio and did some yelps and 'agghs' to emphasize everything and really make it pop. That's my opinion.
I also heard some harmonies buried in the mix which made me wonder if Melissa wasn't in there somewhere, again, sweetening the final product.
But maybe... it's just 1986-87 version really REALLY re-mastered from a different take no one has ever heard. Rhythm, Bass & Drums all sound like Izzy, Duff & Steven, with again some tinkering. The sound of those has that old 80s, beautiful masterpiece AFD-sound that gets all of us erect. I highly doubt those have been messed with.
The song really sounds amazing. Not only is it the best mix of Shadow of Your Love ever heard, it INSTANTLY smokes ANYTHING that was mixed on Chinese Democracy, which is a newer recording than Shadow. It's so well done... it might be one of the better rock mixes have heard in YEARS. Absolutely amazing. It feels like a new AFD song we've never heard (even though we have).
The good thing for me, is i've never been big on demos and unreleased bootlegs n' shit. I like to wait until official releases. So most, if not all of this stuff, we'll be like a fresh listen/new GN'R music for me. Many tracks listed on the upcoming set, I had actually forgotton about.

I still personally feel Axl has A-LOT of animosity towards the business itself. I think he was done in 1994. Cooked. Burnt. Toast. Fucking done.
The Sympathy For The Devil cover was throwing something together, easy, they all knew and could do (ala the current setlists), and flew off the shelf and made it easy. I have begun to think over the years that the whole "Axl's a genius" thing was all a myth and over-blown. Axl just didn't care. He wanted it to happen. But his way, in HIS time. Problem is... nobody keeps that kinda schedule. Not to mention, in defense of Axl, Axl could not have predicted the DRASTIC change in the business in the late 90s/early 2000s. Nobody would've.
Look at today. GN'R drops a new single. Significance? A Spotify alert. A YouTube/Google-algorithm recommending the new Lyric Video.
That's it.
When "Oh My God" was on the End of Days soundtrack in 1999, the rumor mill was insane. What was it? Who was it? What would it sound like? Would a new album be on the way.
Axl waited so long, the business changed 10 times over by the time he got his boots and hat on.
I don't think there ever was a masterplan, because by the time the plan was made... the business around them changed. And by the time Axl was ready to push new Guns and had the right group of guys to do it on a mass-level (DJ/Bumble-era), the business NEEDED old Guns. There was no money there. Artistic merit? Maybe. But no money.
Look at this GN'R tour. No promo. No interviews. Old school Zeppelin-word of mouth type shit...
Overnight they went back to being the biggest rock band in the world. That was a fluke. No big plan.

Friday today saw the release of...
A new Guns N' Roses single
A new Alice In Chains single
Hot damn. Is it Christmas day?
In 1992?

No Cornchucker, even for those with the box to match.
That will be saved for.....
http://www.gnrevolution.com/albums/new/3357.jpg
They have very little to work with when it comes to that album. Basically just a few alt demos, Cornchucker, and a few live performances.
Don't Cry was also around in the Appetite era.
I just realized that wasn't included. iNteresting.
Not a fucking chance in hell that happens. That ship has officially sailed with this AFD: SDE release. Like I alluded to earlier before the reveal, more than likely the bonuses would be GN'R Lies, minus OIAM. And that's basically what they're doing. I can't imagine them going back and double-dipping, unless they re-release Lies as a one-disc set, with re-mastered tracks, next year or the year after, for those who didn't buy the Super Deluxe Edition. Still don't see it happen, because... well... that would make sense, and this is GN'R. So there's a correction factor in play here. This is probably the ONLY GN'R release we'll see for years until they decide to touch Use Your Illusion in five years, or do something completely un-expected, and actually *gasp* -- record new music.
They're going the other direction. This AFD re-release will be an all-incompassing chronicle of the AFD-era and it's lineup of the classic 5. Next up... Use Your Illusion. Imho... Lies won't see a re-release. One In A Million will go the way of being that 'lost track' that diehard fans love, but never see the day again, like Ratt's "Givin' Yourself Away" or Poison's "So Tell Me Why". Those kinda tracks.
#19 Re: Guns N' Roses » GNR.FM | Destruction Is Coming » 374 weeks ago
they pulled the video so here's what I remember of it..
4 CDs - 73 Total Tracks, 49 Unreleased Tracks
1 Bluray Audio - 5.1 Surround Mixes
7 12” 180g Lps
Original Album Expanded remaster from original source tapes.
1 LP of Live Live A Suicide
1 LP of B’Sides n Eps
Sound City sessions and 25 unreleased songs from 1986
2 unreleased tracks from the mike clink sessions
This is the stuff i'm interested in. Subtracted 49 from 73 = 24. So apparently 24 songs have previously been released. 12 songs on AFD x 2?
Makes me wonder if one disc is AFD (original mix), one disc is AFD (2018 remaster).
I'm guessing among those 25 unreleased tracks will be demos & remixes.
The better question now that Live Like A Suicide is included, will GN'R Lies, or select songs off GN'R Lies (everything but OIAM), be included as well as basically a chronicle of the entire era from 1985-1990 with the original/classic 5 members?

Axlin16 wrote:You say Remaster
You mean Re-Arranging. Or Remix.
That's the million dollar question.
Will the remaster just be the original mixes mastered with new toys to make them loud.
Or will there be some altering to the original mixes.
Or will there be some additional performances added.
Will this be the George Lucas special edition A New Hope of GNR?
I remember a while back either in chats or interviews Axl mentioned there were aspects of the original AFD production that he didn't like - related to how things were done back in the day....
So will this just be a remaster...or will there be changes?
That's why it makes more sense to do a base 2-CD, as the $15-20 Deluxe Edition.
CD 1 is the original AFD, Re-mastered. All original 12 songs. Let the 2nd disc (like Pearl Jam's Ten remaster) be the new one (or was it the other way around?). Anyways, one of the discs should be the remixed album. Featuring remixes, Shadow of Your Love 2018, or whatever new stuff they might want to feature. Whether it's Izzy in-studio, Melissa harmonies and synth, or Frank sweetening the drums.
Personally, i'm curious just to hear fresh takes with the current band... just for fun. Just to do a 2018 take.
But the ORIGINAL Appetite with THE ORIGINAL guys, untouched, just remastered is a MUST. The album is a masterpiece. It just needs a fresh coat of paint 30 years later. The car and it's engine should remain the same. Save the remixes for the bonus discs.
