#2021 Re: Guns N' Roses » GN'R Twitter Updates » 533 weeks ago

It's really the inactivity I think that gives guys like pittman a hard time, I mean most people seem to accept Dizzy and Matt and that's just cos they were lucky enough to get aboard before Axl's solitude train had really left the station as much.

Basically if Pittman had joined instead of Dizzy for UYI people would accept him. So it's not really his fault.

Must be tough actually for the new GNR guys if this version of the band gets active, most of them probably believed in the CD dream too at some stage.

#2022 Re: Guns N' Roses » GN'R Twitter Updates » 533 weeks ago

The new GNR guys don't get proper credit basically for two reasons:

1. They are not from AFD or UYI which is what exposed most to GNR

and

2. Their output is simply not enough to justify the time.

The Spaghetti Incident was released in 1993....it was only ever supposed to be a place-holder record until the real originals follow up to UYI came.

Chinese Democracy came out in 2008. That's 17 years between original records and 15 if you count the covers album. To give fans a total of 15 new songs. In a new style. Then those came out with zero promotion, a questionable mix and master, incorrect artwork and booklet. Then the band did nothing for 4 more years before releasing a live blu ray of a questionable performance (by their own standards anyway). Then they've done nothing for 4 more years until now.

Really, it's not surprising that people don't take the past 20 years seriously, it's been degrading to Axl's former reputation as one of the greatest frontmen of all time, and although I personally love the Chinese album, as a body of work for Axl's post-slash career it's tragic how little music he has been able to get out - considering he's such an amazing talent. It's the absolute example you can use of "no-one wins" in the music business, the label didn't make what they should, Axl's art is mostly hidden in a vault, and fans went insane dreaming of mysteries. Worst outcome ever.

Contrast it with someone like Ozzy, who although everyone was thrilled when he returned to Sabbath, has obvious highpoints in his output amongst his solo work as well as with his band.

Or compare it to Megadeth - a band where while everyone will ALWAYS clamour and call for the Rust in Peace Lineup - Mustane managed to put out countless albums and share his art in the meantime. People may call for freedman but they respect the fill in's because shit gets done.

The problem with GNR is almost nothing ever happens, the die hards wait anyway, and then the band insults the people who wait around and calls them lame.

I feel sorry for pitman in the sense that it wasn't his fault. There's probably tons of his work with Axl locked on some HDD somewhere in a draw. But the reality is the past 20 years are a footnote in GNR history of an experiment that didn't work. With any luck Axl will salvage the best of the CD era stuff and re-release it with Slash....but if not...well....I guess better late than never for something to happen.

They don't belong there, they don't deserve this, nobody knows them, nobody cares about them, etc. These guys have kept the band afloat over the last decade or so to get us to where we are today.

Ok...as you guys know I personally really enjoy Chinese Democracy...so this is more for the sake of playing devil's advocate...

But the thing is most people in the wider public don't care that the band was kept afloat.

They didn't like Chinese democracy, they don't care for sub-bass or anything that isn't classic rock sounding, they found it comical that GNR turned into a circus act with a guy with a bucket and an alien on guitar.

Here's what the general public see:

2001: Errrrr This Isn't GNR it's a circus
2002: Why does Axl think he is black?
2006: This is listenable but these guys arn't the old band
2009: Can't see this picture quality - is it recorded on an iphone in an ass? Why is there no pro shot?
2010: I never realised Slash had a kid to Mick Mars before.
2012: What happened to Axl he looks sick.
2014: Very Sick.

I know this because this is what I experience every time I try and get one of my friends around to watch a GNR boot with some drinks etc

So that's the thing pitman...you had your 20 years and all that came out of it is 1 album, and a handful of watchable shows, and a larger handful of embarrassments and mistakes.

The general public would almost have preferred GNR wasn't "kept afloat" and was just gone since 1993 only to return now.

As i said, myself I like the newer stuff too, but I've never met anyone else in person who does.

Well Izzy doesn't wanna go full time or he would be.

So what's the choices:

Gilby Clarke: Prefers to play lead these days. Adequate rhythm player but people say Axl didn't like his writing. Was left out of VR for some reason.

Paul Huge: Didn't like touring.

DJ: More of a lead player, would be absurd next to slash given he apes his style.

Bucket: Won't come back to GNR due to bullying or whatever it was.

Bumble: Obviously has the ability but would be wasted insanely as a rhythm player, also keen to move onto own projects it seemed.

Dave: Makes no sense as he's really from VR. Style was not really ideal for Slash anyway IMO. Seems like would cause media issues about a GNR/VR cross over.

Frank Sidoris: Solid Touring Rhythm player for Slash. But Slash bringing band members into GNR seems like it might upset the balance of GNR and conspirators. If I were Slash i'd keep this as an escape pod for when GNR gets nuts.

Basically....Fortus not only fits the bill exactly he's also kinda the most logical choice other than Izzy...and i strongly doubt Izzy is looking for a full time role.

I don't think people complaining about Izzy is hipster bullshit.

Wanting Izzy on the tour for the reasons you mention is fine to me, but the idea of boycotting the shows entirely because of no Izzy, like  couple of articles in the media have suggested, sounds kinda Hipster to me. I went to the UYI tour in 1993 and it was amazing, and it felt like GNR.

If it was a full reunion the same types would be speculating they're too old, or that only the first album was good.

It's sort of trendy.

The aspect i'm worried about, which I guess ties in, is  is how 'real' is this reunion?

The silence from Slash and Duff, the cancelled TV show from Axl, these things point to a situation where rather than Axl go back to 1980s style GNR  leadership, what has happened is Slash and Duff gave in and returned to GNR without pushing for any changes in the way things happen.

This is disturbing as it may mean there is no plan at all long term and this will literally be a handful of shows for the sake of it before they go back to seperate endeavours or Axl goes back to being semi-retired.

I hope i'm wrong and the band really reunites and starts working on new music and so on.

For my personal taste I disagree.

Izzy is a great songwriter, Duff is a great bass player.

But Rock bands are always better with a dedicated vocalist IMO.

with the current strategy being implemented.

Hehe..come on....1991 was the last time there was an actual strategy.....the closest thing to a current strategy is:

1. Axl said he's ok to do a few shows, cos you know, why not, and it's been a year or two.

2. Slash and Duff are going to shut the fuck up lest they accidentally make Axl change his mind and spend another 30 years in the wilderness.

3. No one knows what the fuck Izzy will do, even Izzy, so we'll book him to come for a few shows, but we won't advertise it as anything other than Slash/Duff/Axl so that no one can complain.

4. Steven is in the too hard basket. We'll have to give him something so he doesn't off himself but he's so damn annoying. Let's work that out later before Axl changes his mind.

5. Matt would be cool to have, but then again, Matt will want to be paid, Hmm...lets think about him later too.

6. Someone call Richard and Frank and keep around. Just incase we never decide anything about Izzy, Matt and Steven.

7. Did Chris say something? What a fuckhead. Jesus 15 years in the band and he doesn't know fans are the enemy yet. Someone get him to shut up before anyone calls this a reunion tour and we have to come to a decision about Izzy and Steven. Fuck. It's like you want Axl to cancel the show.

8. Ok..so we have a lost GNR album around, CD2 sitting around, hundreds of hours of awesome proshot footage and multiple completed docs in the can, we've reassembled one of the greatest rock bands ever, and it's the 30th anniversary of our greatest record. Should we do something? Hmm...think about that later too.

9. Never speak of #8 again unless you don't want Axl to tour. Fuckhead.

Yep. Strategy.

That would be cool!

Has slash been to it before? Seems like the kind of event he may be too cool to attend though!

One thing I never liked about the whole thing and always gave me doubts is how in the living hell were they able to get OFF the moon back up to the probe? Yes I've heard the official story but I don't see how it is feasible in those conditions. You've had ZERO experience doing it, you only get ONE chance, and it goes off without a hitch.

Getting man to the moon, while extremely difficult and maybe impossible, is the LEAST of your worries. It's getting them BACK that is the big problem. What were their plans if they couldn't get them off the moon? If this is 100% legit, there had to be contingency plans in place. What were they?

I recently went to a seminar with Buzz Aldrin where he addressed some of this.

He was asked how they dealt with the fear. He said fear mostly comes from surprises. What NASA did was spend months working out what they know, what know they don't know, and what they think they know and so on. Then they work out a chain of events for every possible contingency.

Eg: Flick switch. Light either comes on or doesn't. If it does, open valve. If it doesn't check wire. If wire burnt then X, if wire not burnt then Y. If X then...and so on and so on.

They talk through and plan out everything that could happen.

Many of the contingencies end in "We Die", Some of them end in "Step into recovery boat on earth".

Basically they would have had a contingency for as many mechanical issues as possible, beyond that, the plan is they die, the president addresses the nation and speaks of their brave sacrifice in the furtherment of their nation and of science and how they made it to a place no one ever has before.

Azoff is a powerful guy in the industry and to be respected in his achievements for that reason....however I have to say...when I read Axl's side of affairs in the court documents that leaked from their dispute I really could see Axl's version of events made a lot of sense.

There's a lot about the way GNR is run that seems odd, but I also think it's a mistake to think Axl is always wrong either - the music business is a ruthless place.
