The other guys wanted another shot at massive success(they got it). Izzy walked.

You seriously blame him for that?

Blame isn't the right word exactly...but more...that incident speaks to his mindset which is relevant here. When UYI got crazy he left, when VR set course for superstardom - he left. He's basically hidden from his fame and lives a happy go lucky lifestyle. The music he does is clearly for artistic or fun sake rather than any attempt to go mainstream or recapture success.

Basically there's nothing about the guy that suggests he would be interested in the type of insanity and media scrutiny that a worldwide GNR reunion tour might produce, and no indication that he'd stick around for the long haul.

My opinion is he'd do a handful of shows then move on again. You want to go to the school reunion - not go back to school wink

We hear this every year about Fortus.  I'll still take Izzy without hesitation. Show me one thing from Fortus that stacks up to anything Izzy has done.

We're talking about a touring line up though.

God knows if there's any higher power it will lead to a musical release of some kind, perhaps with a reissue of AFD30 next year, but right now all we know they plan for sure is a tour, and given the usual "step by step" approach of team brazil. I think it's safe to assume USA tour, followed perhaps by some international dates - doubt much as been speculated beyond that yet.

I don't see Slash giving interviews about CD2 or UYI3 yet, I hear him saying he's going back to conspirators in a year.

So the question isn't which player is better for GNR or for us fans....it's what would Axl Slash and Duff do here?

Izzy is an old pal so it's probably more fun with him - recapture your youth and all that. Tour has more legitimacy publicly. Then again he has a history of vanishing when things get extreme and this is a "massive project" or whatever. He'd probably have to be paid more than a fill in too.

If it were me I'd give Izzy a call and expect him to do a few shows, but I'd be keeping richard on hand too.

Hahah here's a fun way to consider it.

Imagine the AFD 5 have announced a 20 date USA tour. The plan is to then do an AFD remaster and go global in 2017.

Would you bet $1000 that:

(a) Despite reliving his glory days, and going on one of the most important tours of recent music history, Steven Adler will remain sober and agree to anything and everything Axl wants.

(b) Izzy will be 100% cool with the pressure, media and general insanity of a reunion tour. He will absolutely show up to everyone on time, no questions asked. If any of Axl's modern traits - such as team brazil style seclusion and secrecy occur - Izzy will be 100% down with that and agree to do what he is told when he is told it. He will be everywhere exactly as planned and not deviate in any way.

So now, instead of imagining your virtual $1000, think about putting up tens of millions of dollars onto the line for the same bet.....meanwhile you have a workable relationship with Richard and Frank...who let's face it....if they are alive that day will be there and not cause any problems....I can see why it's a hard choice for Axl.

The key question though is if these people are reliable and dependable COMPARED TO THE EXISTING OPTIONS.

Richard Fortus - Currently serving his 15th straight year in GNR. Has never resigned from the band. Does not do drugs. Has put up with everything Axl's way fuss free since day one. Mostly keeps his mouth shut to the media. Overqualified guitar ability wise for the rhythm section. Already knows every song. Only other work has been as a professional session/touring guitarist - until recent bike accident had never cancelled or missed any type of show for anyone. This guy defines professional musician.

Frank Ferrer - 10 years under Axl's rule in modern GNR. No drug use. Has demonstrated professional loyalty to the band such as finishing a show with a broken foot (Australia).

And the alternatives:

Izzy: Obviously the most legit GNR guy out there - but has a history of doing what suits himself. Bailed on the UYI tour back in the day, has made guest appearances from time to time since then, but never for a serious length of time - just when he feels like doing a show or two. Is known to "blow off" stuff when the bullshit meter gets too high - did this during UYI recordings - and many other Izzy associates tell similar stories - such as that one where he said he was going to get a drink during rehearsals for his own band - and just walking out and not returning at all. No one knew if he would come to the hall of fame or not. Also bailed on VR when he didn't want a singer. Get the impression is difficult to contact too as he might be at home one day then walking the sahara the next. Most of his projects appear to be part time or informally organised. Cool guy but basically hasn't demonstrated any willingness to go back into Axl's world full time or put up with the way things would be or do anything of this scale. He's showed up a few times cos it was fun and he felt like it and he can. Not dissing him - just saying - if you are Axl and making a choice...can he rely on Izzy to do a 20+ date tour and put up with whatever GNR tout drama may occur?

Steven - one of the most notorious junkies in Rock and Roll. Let them down so much in the past they actually fired him even when half the rest of the band at least were on drugs themselves! Has had one of the most storied attempts at trying to get clean and failing more times than anyone can count. Never put up with Axl being in charge even back in the day and seems to be relatively erratic still ("I love the new band. Great Guys. Fucking Scabs that arn't GNR"). Basically shows little chance of being an obedient employee. Duff doubts he is clean now. Has the worst record of staying clean in the band - a band which includes notorious junkies and substance abusers like Slash!

So look, of course all the fans want the real GNR and Izzy and Steven for that reason, but are we really doubting that it's not a reliable choice for Axl? Have a look at those 4 guys resumes and life histories and tell me which two you would put your faith in if you are plotting a "massive project".

But is that portion of the fanbase who will stay home because of Izzy and Steven really that big, or significant? Do they even really exist off the forums? Would the band really miss anything in terms of revenue? I don't believe so...

I tend to agree with this.

The thing is it's being presented in the media as the GNR reunion. For example Ultimate Classic Rock on facebook that I follow posted an article "Guns N' Roses announce another reunion concert" over the mexico dates.

I would speculate average joe type fans only care about Slash and Axl, and then it's music hardcores and forum people that care about the AFD 5 - and out of those while most might prefer a full reunion at this stage of the game people will take what they can get.

So i'd guess actual boycotting fans wouldn't be significant in numbers.

I totally get people like Will and John might choose to boycott the shows over his absence...but I doubt that many people are so heavily invested in the drums and rhythm guitar. No disrespect to Steven Izzy, Will or John intended in saying that.

I don't think us forum peeps are indicative of normal casual fans. I drove a 15 hour round trip to see new GNR in 2010. On this site that's probably pretty normal right? bet i'm not the only one with such a story -  but it's not something joe public would do. Same thing with boycotting for Izzy - it would be more common here online that in a wider sample IMO - and these shows are being marketed to the casuals who liked GNR back in UYI days etc - not just us.

In my opinion any media complaints about the lack of Izzy or Steven is hipster nonsense equating to the usual music snob "only their first albums are good" type stuff. If the reunion was all 5 guys it was transform into complaints about their age.

In my opinion there's three groups of fans here:

1. a handful of genuine fans that actually care - hard core izzy fans - the type of people who have all his solos albums and actually listen to them - you know who you are - there's some on this board from memory - but it's pretty underground in real life. Izzy isn't exactly well known anymore really.

2. Mainstream GNR fans who might prefer izzy if asked but really only care about Axl and Slash.

3. Hipsters who will find a way to hate this reunion to prove their knowledge.

I feel this is a good rebuttal of the "it's all a sound studio" theories.

So my problems with it being fake are:

1. It's actually more plausible with 60s tech to do it than to fake it. Doing it requires strapping yourself onto a zillion tons of TNT and hoping for the best. Faking it well requires video toys they didn't have.

2. Why fake it 9 times? Why not do it once and declare there's nothing there? Every time they fake it the level of cover up required gets more implausible.

3. Surely the soviets or someone else would have called them on their BS if there was even the slightest chance it was fake - given the rivalry at the time.

#2037 Re: Guns N' Roses » Your Opinions on a Axl/Slash Reconciliation » 536 weeks ago

Yeah i could see them doing a bit of co-shredding as part of a jam at the end of the song.

Remember in the live version of VR's "Set Me Free" Slash used to trade leads with Dave over the main riff - Dave would really let out all these fast runs too that he doesn't do as a rhythm player. I could see something similar happening. Maybe some slash/fortus jams over a cover or something...we know the old new band (lol) used to let fortus do like 5 kohd solos so that's a possibility.....

Also - i've seen Slash do rhythm parts when he's playing with other name guitarists or playing a song that doesn't suit his style.

I saw a while back on social media Fortus said Slash had asked him to join his band once....so I think there's a bit of mutual respect.

Wow...awesome to see some more modern moon stuff.

It always captivates my imagination to think of pace travel.

Hope they film some of the usa's leftover gear next time to shut up the hoax conspiracy theory!

Its amazing how after that UYI tour that went on forever, Slash wanted to do another tour.

Indeed...for a quy that's so famous Slash is by most accounts very humble and very nice, but his work ethic is almost pathological. It's cool for fans because it means we get so much....but at the same time sometimes I wonder if he's actually afraid of not-pushing forward...I guess he knows what keeps him off junk....but I do wonder for his family...like between the constant touring and his other businesses I wonder if he is ever home lol

Hmmm that opening clips gets the blood flowing...can't think of a way to say this that doesn't sound harsh to that line up - but that with Slash's take on the outro solo is going to kick some ass.
