#2381 Re: Guns N' Roses » Bob Lefsetz: Best Buy Deal confirmed/Azoff response to leaks » 923 weeks ago

The problem with trying to get street cred back is that it often means that you need to do things that are non commercial.

For example lets say he did free concerts, let this skewerl guy off, leaked the whole album, said its only gonna be released thru Indy record companies and fuck the majors etc etc.   He would no doubt get a heap of street cred back but nobody would make a cracker.

Unfortunatly I believe the drive for a dollar (whether that be Axls or the record company's) will overide any burning deisre to get street cred back.

Those two links don't connect to anything for me?

I also don't really get what he is saying its more of an incoherent disjointed rambling.  The only real thing I can gleen from it is he is saying going after skewerl (whcih pisses the fans off etc) was not a good move.  Also basically that downloading is here so just accept it and don't try and stop it.  See it as a positive way to boost concert ticket sales, merchandise etc going forward.

But in all, a pretty poorly put together article IMHO.  What was the conext of it anyhow it seems like a heap is missing - I don't know because the links don't work for me.

I just doodle around a bit on the guitar by myself.  I used to play heaps back when I was a student (ahh so much spare time) but in truth the last few years Ive hardly picked it up.  Ive been threatening to get serious again once my business is a little more self sufficent and I can dedicate the time to it.

My stuff is nothing flash - I have a Epiphone (Les Paul) Sunburst in colour, I also have a shitty Fender Squier Strat and a cheap electric accoustic.  My AMP is the Slash Signature Edition Marshall 100W Head and Speaker Cabinet.  Although lately the poor thing sits in the corner most of the time and I simply play the accoustic or the electric without it being plugged in so I don't piss my girlfriend or the neighbours off.

I would say Slash is pretty much done with ever talking trash about Axl publicly again.  Anything out of his mouth about Axl is likely to be complimentary....

How then does the RIAA or FBI know that this wasn't an intentional publicty stunt by GNR.  Answer - they check with them first and ask them if it is ok if they go ahead with chasing this guy.

#2388 Re: Guns N' Roses » **Kevin Cogill Who Leaked 9 GnR Songs Arrested Today** » 923 weeks ago

I think the statement shows they are involved in this to a certain degree.  Their interest is in the original source, just as presumably Universal's is.  Also if they can't comment publicly as the investigation is ongoing, does that not tell you they are involved at some level.  If they were an innocent party sitting on the sidelines then they could comment on it just like you and I can.

Don't get me wrong I don't blame universal and GNR for wanting to plug the leak and going after the ultimate source - I would too.  All I am saying is that GNR has had a level of involvement in this and from a PR marketing point of view I think its been damaging for them.  Now I don't know who the bright spark was that decided to send 5 FBI agents rather than just ask the guy to come down to his local station etc.  This could have all been handled quite discreetly - but it wasn't.  So that says to me that somebody wanted to send a message and that message was most likely sanctioned by GNR or Azoff also.

Unfortunately I don't think anything positive can come out of this for the GNR camp.

So Bright Eyes do you believe GNR weren't consulted on this at all by Universal?

I don't buy it for one second.  Surely since it was GNR's music even if this is initiated by RIAA and or Universal they would have consulted with GNR first before taking any action.  Otherwise how would they know they weren't demos to be shared.

If I record some songs and suddenly people are hosting them on a website are RIAA gonna take action about it.  NO!  If they did they would at least have to check with me to see if I wanted them out there or not.  Many artists share their music like that.  Now we all know (or presume) that GNR didn't want them there.  But how the hell would RIAA or whoever know that for a fact without checking with GNR and asking - should we go after them?

Why when NIN or Radiohead (cant remeber who) intentionally left a memory stick in a toilet at a concert so some new songs woudl circulate - why were those people not chased down.  Why because they checked with the band and found it was part of a marketing strategy.

As MLS said the first time he leaked stuff in 2007, Universal wanted to go after him but Axl and the GNR camp didn't, SO IT NEVER HAPPENED.  That there in itself implies that GNR had a say in this.  The GNR camp may not be driving this train but they sure as hell gave it the ok to leave the station.

I don't think Azoff is an "ass clown". He has an incredible resume that speaks for itself. However, I don't think he realized what he walked into. Its not a band looking to further its career. Its a cyber soap opera where Axl's hangers on act like they have authority while the band members with zero power or influence have to twiddle their thumbs and pray the paycheck keeps coming.

The only activity that happens is every few years when they feel the need to have us reenact 1987 but without the lineup that brought us that magical time.

I doubt that's what Azoff signed up for.

I also think that the hangars on are having far too much influence.  From the housekeeper, to her ABBA son, to Del etc.  These people have no business acumen and should be totally eliminated from the equation.  They are making emotional decisions that are having a profound impact on Axl's business situation.  They have got caught up in the soap opera as you say, and clearly can't think rationally.  Beta/Fernando have been made to look foolish by MSL and so they are trying to lash out to score a point back and damn the consequences.

Very silly move.  If Azoff doesn't have any pull in the relationship he should drop them like a hot potatoe.
