Firstly, while I prefer new music to live shows, it seems the bulk of the bands activity IS playing old music at live shows, so to me it doesn't make sense to re-hire someone who is bad at that UNLESS the focus of the band was to shift entirely onto new music creation. If that was going to happen then sure....but there's nothing to indicate it will sadly.
I'm still of the belief that all this senseless touring is for a reason. If you look at it economically the only reason he really needs to do it is to support a 10 man band with entourage. Considering he don't even like to tour I struggle to imagine him wanting to become a full blown nostalgia act when he could just sit at home and cash publishing checks. I think he still wants to do something creative with this band, if not he'd just quit or go solo (which he has alluded to doing before). Thankfully that does not yet seem to be the case.
Secondly, lots of people seem to presume that Axl could get nothing workable out of DJ, but he seems to be a fairly strong and prolific writer in terms of his Sixx:Am stuff and Motley Stuff. So I think it's a real assumption to think that he wouldn't be able to create something that's suitable for GNR. What the band has lacked since Slash is the rock aspect to go with Axl's ballads. DJ seems to be the solution to create the faster numbers to accompany songs like TWAT. Additionally he's pretty versatile - the motley songs sounded like motley - which sounds different to Sixx...I believe he could make good GNR stuff with Axl. So i don't see the logic in throwing that away before it's tried out.
I wouldn't be surprised if you'd consider me to be one of those people, but I'm actually not. I may not have a lot of faith in DJ as of yet, but I damn sure have a lot of faith in Axl. In my opinion Slash, Robin and Ron have all done great things with Axl but I couldn't care less for their work outside of GN'R. I expect the same to be true with DJ. The Ballad of Death is a decent song, even I'll admit that.
I consider Robin a safer, proven card though and optimally I wouldn't want to fix something that isn't broken.
Thirdly, people forget there IS more robin stuff in the vault. So it's probable whatever else he had to offer we will already hear someday...so unless he's come up with some new genius thing recently..there's no need to bring him back and ruin the potential of DJ and the live show just for more songwriting. There's already a backlog of his stuff to draw upon. He had his time with Axl (twice) and we got Better out of it, and maybe some more in the vault....but it seems like a backwards step to revert to him now....there's nothing to be gained out of it.
This is true, and while I'd love for Robin to come back in theory I realize it would be anything but smooth in practice.
In that occasion I'd like to congratulate monkey for doing the impossible, changing someones opinion on the internet! Not only have you done it with somebody who's considered to be a pretty stubborn fundamentalist by a lot of people, but you did it twice! (The Izzy thread was the first time).
No, I'm not joking. Your argument is better than mine and I willfully concede.

He did get better by 2006...but I dunno....I'd be happy to have him on a new album....but his AFD/UYI stuff is just way too patchy for me to want to bring him back as a full time live player in the band. DJ is doing it better than him for the most part and Fortus easily could. So it wouldn't make sense to me.
I can see your problems with him, but would you really take a faithful rendering of the old stuff over new music? I know that's a bit preemptive given we haven't heard what Axl might get out of DJ yet, but for sake of argument let's suppose he is "shit" in that department. Would you still say the same?
From my point of view I hear the Better or first TWAT solo and I think "I want more of that". Of course, it should also be said that I don't even go to gigs (by any band) anymore since I quite frankly find them boring. So to me, as long as he carries it reasonably for the casuals and the media, I don't really care what changes he does to stuff. I've seen em live and I've heard the old songs a thousand times. As long as it's not a catastrophe I'm pretty much "whatever" about what happens in that arena. In fact, these days I'd consider Axl a far greater liability on performing the old stuff.

who coudln't make a good album with a 10+ million dollar budget, world class musicians at their disposal and 10+ years of free time on their hands to work with. It's not a stretch to think given the same circumstances I or you or anyone could come up with something just as good as CD.
Not even a stretch? Neither of us can even play the guitar! I mean sure, a group of talented musicians might be able to create something similar with all that, but what the hell is your role going to be in this thing? You're going to sing as good as Axl? Play guitar as good as Buckethead? Come up with lyrics and melodies as good as one of the most successful song writers in history?
I've heard some crazy shit in my time, but damn!

Not sure about that, there's a look when Axl says "I'm trying to do the right thing here" too. Both times he looks in Axl's direction (he's on different parts of the stage during the two looks).

Just so I know how sensitive you are to this stuff (my musical ear is not very good), would you characterize his playing on the SCOM solo I posted to be a good example of what you're talking about?
Edit: Alright, that was a good example. I totally agree with you on that one, but I never felt it was endemic or anything (YCBM is probably one of those songs the new band has never gotten right, Axl included). Do you feel the same about scom or other songs?

You make it sound like he's out there butchering classic GN'R stuff with killswitches and random bends. It's his own style no doubt, but the difference is miniscule. He hits the right notes where he should.
Are there guitarists better suited to old gn'r than him? Of course, but Robin was brought in to write new music. His work on the old songs being a little bit off is a minor issue. It's not bad, just different.

On day I'd like to know the logic behind this "not available in your country" stuff.
#2979 Re: Dust N' Bones & Cyborg Slunks » Bring Back Robin Finck "Tank" » 689 weeks ago
he's every bit the hack I would have been trying to replace Slash in GnR and I don't pretend to be a professional guitar player.
Since when have you and Bono been sharing accounts?
But you're right, Robin is no more a rock guitarist than Fernando Alonso is a bus driver.

I thought that there was a proper credits to the songwriting on Chinese Democracy on the ASCAP website, where Robin where Robin has a helluva a lot song writing credit.
I much prefer Robin's feeling, crab walk and artistic integrity versus a show boating, douche looking DJ Ashba. Sorry but the guy is a joke.
If Robin was such a shitty guitarist why would Axl Rose and Trent Reznor want him?
Wasn't he recommended by Matt Sorum to Axl?
Those were appearance credits, not song writing. He still wrote those parts though, just didn't get the credit for the songs as a whole.
Yeah, according to Matt he and Axl went to a club and Matt asked him something like "you like him?", Axl said "yes". Then Matt said "you think he'd be a good partner for Slash?". Axl replied "I think he would be a good replacement for Slash".
