Re: David Bowie Returns On "The Next Day"

David Bowie celebrated his 66th birthday this morning by releasing a new single and announcing that his first album in 10 years will come out in March. News of a new release from the legendary musician came as a surprise to fans, as Bowie has been out of the public spotlight for years and many assumed he had essentially retired from music.

The new single, "Where Are We Now?," is already being sold in the iTunes Music Store in 119 countries. Bowie's 30th studio recording, dubbed The Next Day, is also available for pre-order on iTunes. Produced by long-time collaborator Tony Visconti, "Where Are We Now?" was written by Bowie and recorded in New York. The single is accompanied by a haunting video directed by Tony Oursler which harks back to the singer's time in Berlin.

I fucking love Bowie - easily in my top 5. And I can't tell you how glad I am that he's putting this out- I truly thought he was done.

For anyone (Russ) that was excited by the idea of industrial Axl that didn't quite pan out, Bowie's forays into the genre 12ish years back would be any other artist's best work, if that artist wasn't a monster like Bowie who has at least 10 "best" works, each sounding nothing alike.

I've heard a snippet of the song, but I may completely avoid it to take in the whole album in March.

Listened to the new song earlier today.  A slow song with some emotional lyrical content to it. Hoping this record has some upbeat works and a couple rockers. Haven't heard Bowie do a rocker in quite awhile. I would love for an industrial Axl as well. I'm Afraid of Americans gave a great industrial sound with Bowie's fierce lyrics to them and production. Hoping for the best with his new album. Would love to see him live some day soon.

I agree with your points, smoke!

Glad someone posted this information on the thread.

It's really good and big news. His new song sounded good for the first listen, a bit similar to one of his last bigger singles (don't wanna spoil it for those who are waiting for the full album.)

I know that Bowie's health wasn't too good in the past years, but... to tell the truth, in this case, I'd welcome a new tour even more than a new album, cause I've never seen him live.

Sounds good to me, too.

'Walking the Dead' gave me a chuckle, a spot-on wordplay. Also enjoyed all the Berlin references as 'Heroes' and Low are likely the pinnacles of his recording career. To me, The Next Day has a shot at becoming a worthy addition to his discography.

New Bowie video. Very strange video; but the song is enjoyable and has a classic sound which I dig. I'm hoping he does tour again. With NIN going on back on the road and Bowie & his backing band. It sounds like the rest of this year and early 2014 are going to be fucking sweet.

On day I'd like to know the logic behind this "not available in your country" stuff.

Looks like Bowie's new album is getting good press! I may pick it up once I buy a few other CDs I have my eye on already.
