But i'm sorry, New Guns, any incarnation, was a WAYYYYY tighter live band, sounded infinitely better than the old band, at every turn, and it was because of the additional musicians, and lack of drug use.
Still sounded better tho
Not trying to be a contrarian, I really want to know your opinion, but comparing these two pro-shot soundboard incarnations of Nightrain you actually prefer GNR (ignoring vocals for now)? Listen to when the first verse begins (at around the 0:40 mark in the GNR vid, 0:30 in the Slash vid), it just becomes so hard to hear the individual parts it becomes a bit of an unintelligible mess to me in the GNR version. In Slash's version, just listen to the nice little fill that he does at 4:26, you're never able to hear things like that in a three-guitarist setup.
Again, I'm not being facetious, it's a genuine question, and I did try to be honest and find the best examples for both bands. To me, Slash's band sounds MUCH tighter here.
Yes, the drugs and alcohol had a lot to do with lack of tightness in past Slash performances, but since he's been clean he's been one tight ass motherfucker.

Nor does it mean you have to undervalue his role. I'm beginning to think Pitman banged your girlfriend. The only reasonable explanation for the amount of hatred you throw his way.
I really, really, don't get this. Why could he not just dislike his contributions, why does it need to be irrational hate if he disagrees with your opinion?

Sub bass brings out low frequency sound in the mix and makes it more audible. i.e. the opposite of burying.
No it doesn't, most sub bass that gets added to music isn't even in-tune, it's just a rhythmic pumping of semi-random frequencies below 60hz. It only adds 'power', but nothing tonally. In fact, it kills dynamics, since it takes up a significant part of the overall dynamic range without adding much in the way of real musical information.
Sub bass is fine when you want to create a "pumping" effect in a compressor for EDM, or to spice up a badly miced/tuned bass drum in rock recordings. If you have a good kick sound, you don't need artificial sub bass at all in rock.
Here is a photo of a harmonica:
and here is a photo of a professional Pro Tools setupOne is vastly more complex than the other. Care to guess which.
That's an epicly bad argument man. He could be a brain surgeon, still doesn't mean he should perform brain surgery on stage 'cause it's more complex than playing the harmonica. On top of that: the harmonica is an instrument, pro-tools is a tool. Anyone can learn how to use a tool, but not everyone can be an artist.
I'm in no way saying Pitman isn't good at what he does. I'm saying that some people don't care for what he's good at and rather not have two keyboard players in the live band. And even in what he's good at (studio producing), I personally vastly prefer a different style.
But I can't understand why you hate some of these old guys with such a passion, and your dismissal of what they could bring to the table is uninformed.
It's not uninformed, it's a matter of taste. I'm sure you can understand that some people have different tastes in music, right?
I'm getting pretty tired of having to read this dumb fanboy shit about how awful these guys are and "how amazing it would be if Slash told Fortus to sit the fuck down, and produced the fabled VR album that never was from his back pocket and if Axl just came over it in an instant." It's just stupid.
Sure, but the same can be said about fanboys talking about how Slash just joined Axl's band on Axl's terms and we'll still get CDII, yada yada yada... It's par for the course man, if you don't like it, just ignore it. Or, you know, share your own opinion without trying to represent it as fact.

The weirdest thing is how the hell Axl's singing vocals (the clean ones of modern day) are actually HIGHER than he was back in the day. That's usually unheard of.
It's because he's using more falsetto these days (hence the Mickeyness), which is always higher than ones modal voice. There's some discussion on the correct term, as he's not always using true falsetto (the into to Better is a good example of his 'true' falsetto voice) but more of a head voice thing as some people would define as stronger than a typical falsetto, but still not coming from the chest while allowing for some of the higher notes to be hit more easily. He used to use mostly his chest voice back in the day, but it requires quite some power to push it up so high and more easily results in the raspiness he's known for. In the head voice, adding power usually leads to a hoarser sounding voice.

Axis deep voice is fake. Just listen to him during his rants during shows, or even back in the day.
this is his normal speaking voice
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCKhrOyHzzM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPLWW390iqo
not the low voice he does in some interviews
his natural sining voice is the one he uses in patience's of the demo of don't cry.
True, I think in this one he's "exagerating" a bit, for instance here: https://youtu.be/o7p1n_cOmXc
Or here: https://youtu.be/zHykv2ylK0g
And at his worst during those court sessions, where he's wearing the green blazer...

Axl has one of the coolest speaking voices in rock, could probably have had a career just doing that.
That's definitely true! I've always wondered if uses the low register while speaking on purpose to 'compensate' for his high pitched raspy singing style, you know... so people don't think he sounds like Gilbert Gottfried all the time
. He used to speak even lower that he seems to do these days, but voices changes with age of course.

So for me more is better in the studio, if done right. I love Axl's double and triple vocal layering, I love guitar interplay and I love different instruments playing different melodies. Is it IRS where there is this cool acoustic guitar melody in the background? Love that.
I agree this works better in the studio. As a hobbyist rock producer myself, I always add extra layers to recorded versions of songs. But you don't need extra personnel for that, it usually sounds more holistic if you get the core band members to do that kinda stuff.
#348 Re: Guns N' Roses » Salon Reunion article » 539 weeks ago
The songs much much sound worse, with far less swing & rock n roll with 3 guitarists. It's like rock without the roll. Just White American rock music on steroids.
That idea of sounding richer & fuller is totally false. They sound oppressed, squeezed of texture or nuances of accommodate something that doesn't fit.I said it a while back: what I want is the 5 piece band without keyboards or synths. I want a rock n roll band again. Keys & horns are OK for a track or two & maybe some backing singers for the ballads/softer songs. But yea.. The 3rd guitarist actually weakens the thing.
This, a thousand times this! It gets infinitely harder to get an organic groove going with three guitarists, especially if their roles are ill-defined. Even Slash's conspirators and VR sound so much more coherent and 'fun' than post-Slash GNR ever did. The only exception to this was during certain Bucket solo spots back in the day, when the rhythm guitars just played the same simple riff (Nightrain comes to mind).

Well, Izzy's fans are clearly the most vocal, all comments are about him yet he and Duff have just as many votes
.
Nothing against Izzy, but looking at his discography post-Guns there's nothing there that convinces me he's a better songwriter than Duff. I enjoy most of BIM more than any of the Izzy stuff, and I really think people underestimate how much Duff's groove has impacted the GNR sound.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: IFOCS is (to me) by leaps and bounds the best post-GNR album of any of the members (yes, that includes the Izzy stuff as well as CD). It's an album that had a couple of excellent singles, fan-servicing deep cuts and above-average fillers. It was a great reflection of where rock music was at the time without loosing sight of that rawness that was so unique to GNR. A dark-but-not-bleak album that sits right on the edge of grunge and post-grunge, with a healthy dose of hard rock infused in every riff and solo. I always say it's what AIC would've sounded like if they would've been from Louisiana.
Eric Dover is to my ears the best singer Slash has worked with post-Axl, and Beggars would've easily charted on-par with (or better than) GNR's non-ballad early 90's singles if it would've been released as a GNR song.
