#3571 Re: The Garden » Big Pharma lobbies against faster drug trials » 742 weeks ago

Are there any nations that have really tried? Europe has always been socialist, and the American system has been for quite some time. The rest of the world is basically slave states so not much to look at there.

So no, I don't have any example of a free market health care system working, but as you see above, I have a ton of examples of government systems not working.

What I do know is that you get a ton of better care at a private clinic than you do at any state facility. Yeah, it costs money, but if we weren't putting 90%+ of our pay check in the governments pocket any working man would afford it. If you have money you are guaranteed good care. With the government they may put you on a waiting list for so long you don't even make it, or they refuse new methods because it's not been approved by the government for some usual bs political/religious reason. Or worse, they might just forget about it (tons of examples of that over here) because government people tend to not give a shit because it's not their profits or even jobs at stake. I've been to the system a few times. First time they operated on me without anesthetics because the doctor was short on time. In America I might sue and get a million dollars at a private clinic, over here they just shafted my complaint with no legal recourse. Deal with it basically.

Basically the only thing a socialist system has over a private one is that even the lowest bottom feeder will get taken care of. And for what? So they can continue bottom feeding? Actually, if you ask me, the real social thing to do would be to let nature go its course and spare the majority the burdens of our weakest. And if I have happen to be one of them I'll do the patriotic thing and accept my destiny. We're not gonna make it out alive anyway, so why not try and make it good while it lasts?

Japan is a US protectorate, where do you think they got their model? Don't worry, if it's that kind of thing you want it's coming to a town near you very soon. But I don't see why 20 years of zero growth is something to strive for.

Was going through some UYI stuff and it dawned on me how under appreciated Axl is as a writer. He is usually seen as, albeit very talented, the egocentric and childish rock star who only complains about his problems. With AFD, One In A Million and Get In The Ring, the riots and rants I can sort of see where that's coming from.

Then on the other hand you get Locomotive, Coma, Breakdown, Estranged, Dead Horse, Don't Damn Me etc.  All profoundly deep songs with a clear philosophical message. Axl is not like RATM or John Lennon. He doesn't sing about big issues, he's all about the personal approach cause that's all he knows, and you ask me he's damn apt at it too.

Id say Axl peaked on Lies... his voice just kills on it.

Agreed. Crazy and Million are his finest work, especially Crazy. The band was in the zone then, too bad they only got to make 15 songs while they were in it.

I forgot who the hell it was but he was gonna give that song to a different singer but Sinead covered it before it happened, which of course sent her into the stratosphere until she threw it all away by tearing up that pic of the Pope two years later.

Would love to see the alternate universe where she didn't pull that stunt. She was amazing, only 26 when that happened, and may not have even peaked yet. It just ruined every facet of her career.

Tearing the Emperors picture was the greatest thing she ever did, and the fact that her career totally tanked afterwards shows that she was right, that institution is the true enemy.

She did some decent tunes, but that stunt was total balls. One of a kind.

That's all well and good CC, but when both the people and the super capitalists want socialism, what are you going to do about it?

Being right is one thing, but as long as the super rich continue to fund regulation and planned economy there is not much we can do about it. They've won, now you gotta adapt to their way of doing things. If not, they might soon consider you a threat.

The futuristic idea that microchips could be implanted under a patient's skin to control the release of drugs has taken another step forward.

US scientists have been testing just such a device on women with the bone-wasting disease osteoporosis.

The chip was inserted in their waist and activated by remote control.

A clinical trial, reported in Science Translational Medicine, showed the chip could administer the correct doses and that there were no side effects.

The innovation has also been discussed here at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

One of the designers, Prof Robert Langer from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), claimed the programmable nature of the device opened up fascinating new avenues for medicine.

"You could literally have a pharmacy on a chip," he said. "This study used the device for the treatment of osteoporosis. However, there are many other applications where this type of microchip approach could improve treatment outcomes for patients, such as multiple sclerosis, vaccine delivery, for cancer treatment and for pain management."

The work is described as the first in-human testing of a wirelessly controlled drug delivery microchip. The technology at its core has been in development for more than 15 years.
