good shit!

i really think there may be something with the piano arrangements played by both axl and dizzy in all the different tours throughout the years. dizzy played a lot of really interesting things when he had a chance to solo -- who knows if we'll ever be able to confirm if the material was slated for an official release or not.

and i really wish this man had more of a chance to pen some gnr tracks. truly an underrated talent:

The 99 album is so interesting.

Those early leaks sound so good. Very classic GNR.

i really wish we had the chance to hear this album. there was something truly unique about those early recordings -- to me, it was more of an industrial/electronic sound with gnr influences; when cd finally was released, it had the base sound of the early "demos", but had been dicked around with for a decade until it became a compromise of sounds. after axl thought the world was uninterested in his new direction, he kept backtracking and overdubbing until he thought he had a record that would make everybody happy. instead, he pissed off he hardcore fans who wanted the raw sean beaven album we'd been promised, and alienated the original guns fans with a strange, haphazard suite of wacky songs that seemingly had little to do with each other.

at times, i'm slightly more biased towards the 03/04 version of the record with bucket involved, but the original presentation of axl's vision would be a fascinating listen.

i do agree w/ flashflood, though -- the 96/97 demos would be AMAZING to hear. i'd pay a pretty penny to hear some of those original demos/sketches the band put together before imploding.

maybe we'll get lucky after the tour dies down. after reading the slash quote referenced in the '96 page of chinese whispers, i have hope:

"[The 1996 tracks are] not something I would want to approach (without Slash), because, at the time, there was only one person that I knew who could do certain riffs that way. [...] That's the reason why that material got scrapped." (Axl, press release, 08/14/02)

perhaps axl is interested is picking up where the original band left off?

so far we got:

- slash playing the intro riff to cd in 1988
- axl teasing prostitute as the intro to november rain in 01/02 (and 06/07?)
- a piece of the general being used as a show opener (when was this again?)

i read somewhere on this forum that if the world was being jammed by the band at live shows at some point... anyone have any more info on that?

anything else i'm missing from the list above?

i wonder what else is out there that we haven't picked up on yet. perhaps that duet from finck and bucket at rock in rio 3 was something being worked on for the album. or maybe it's just a little jam over the "i could have lied" riff by the chili peppers. or it could just be an outtake from colma/electric tears.

i might go back and listen to all the various band jams throughout the years and see if anything jumps out at me.

i also wonder if bucket/brain jammed on some cool shit that never really went anywhere in gnr land, so they used parts of it elsewhere in their own music. we've heard tons of reports about the late night jam sessions that went down, where the band just dicked around on stuff waiting for axl to show up. i mean, if something made its way into axl's ears, i don't think it could realistically (or legally) be repurposed outside of guns n' roses... but for the "sketches" that were just vamped on a few times... i could see pieces of stuff like that popping up in bucket's solo stuff, even if it is just a lick or riff here and there.

the bermuda triangle album by buckethead is a really curious release. a rare electronic-based album from buckethead, with lots of programming, samples and drum loops. the song "whatevas" in particular sounds a lot like the direction axl was trying to take with cd. i could totally see axl taking this and running with it. great, melodic solo by the way -- sounds a lot like his work on the album:

Captain Eo's Voyage is my favorite. Giant Robot NTT is a close second. Population Override is right up there too. As is Thanatopsis: Axiology. Damn, he's got so much good stuff.

that giant robot ntt album is unreal. quintessential bucket. you get a bit of everything here that makes him so great & versatile. the beautiful, melodic soloing in "mrs beasley" and "scraps". the funky, chaotic jamming in "chicken boy". the crunchy as shit riffing in "well, well, well" and "jowls". you even get some of his death cube k type stuff on "the void".

brain fuckin' kills it here, too. him and bucket are one of my favorite guitar/drummer combos of all time. they have amazing, natural chemistry and compliment each other so well. i can probably single-handedly account for half the views on this jam:

"binge buddies" is another gem on this record -- absolutely love brain's feel on it. axl really could have done something special with these 2 fuckers in his band. such a shame he didn't capitalize on it.

but whatever.

gotta say i love all the movie samples sprinkled throughout this album. you have to give bucket credit on his taste in movies. we get bits of texas chainsaw massacre, enter the dragon, and clockwork orange here. if only they could have cleared those... it's unfortunate that caused this to never get the release or attention it deserves.

good call -- been meaning to check them out.

just listened to a few jams on youtube. pretty standard stuff, but fortus shines and has a great tone. it's great to see him in an actual music video.

this locked & loaded song w/ slash is pretty dope. doesn't look like fortus is on the song, though. crazy to think slash and fortus played on the same EP just a few years before they'd be trading leads in a reunited guns n' roses.

Glad to hear they are at least jamming new ideas for songs. Whether or not we ever hear them is another thing... but a man can dream and this is a step towards better news in the future!

yeah, that was really great to hear, actually. i mean, i know this is a fortus interview and all -- after years of "oh, the album's coming this year!" quotes, i just kind of naturally started taking everything he said with a grain of salt going forward. but the fact that he's gelling so well with slash/duff and regularly coming up with new ideas with them is a really good sign. there's definitely some natural chemistry there, and we all know slash and duff are passionate about releasing music -- so maybe once the tour is finally over, they'll have a bunch of strong ideas or even full instrumentals that they can take back to the ax man for review/vocals.

you know, i'd really like to think that axl sits in his oxygen room during the slash/fortus duets and thinks "WOW! i need to get these fuckin' monsters in the studio together!" then again, he could just as easily be spending this time counting his stacks from the tour.

as a side note, richard's guitar skills have come a long way since we first heard him. i never thought he'd be able to pull off some of the bucket stuff that he's playing with ease these days. he'd make a great lead player in another band in some bizzaro universe.

all in all, i'd love to see what he could pull off with those guys in the studio. just trying to not get my hopes up.... again.

love the forum, by the way. been spending ungodly amounts of time lately going through old threads trying to fill in the "dark years" when i had (temporarily) moved on from following the cd saga. accidentally got hooked back into everything when i started a record collection and picked up cd on vinyl. weird thread to make my first post on, but what the hell.
