I believe they could still write songs.
I get AFD was about street life, UYI was mostly about being AFD famous while having mental and girl troubles, and CD was mostly about being UYI famous and breaking up....
But individual songs like Civil War and Catcher in the Rye show that not everything has to be purely literal and autobiographical.
I'm just at a point where I think Axl releasing any music is a good thing.
If it's new music he wrote now great, if it's something he wrote in 1999 great, if it's something he wrote in 1986 great.
I think the "CD leftovers" have a lot of potential as they date from a time when vocally he had a lot of screams left in the tank, and emotionally he seemed more volatile which while unhappy for him probably makes for a lot of emotional and powerful musical ideas and feeling in the songs.
The only thing I really fear are any more long breaks...I really hope Absurd is a precursor to an EP or album...and doesn't turn out to be a random isolated single.

From memory it sounded pretty much like the finished version except with bumble's amp tone and fretless between verses instead of the slash licks. Basically the same version of the song.
Had it been released in decent quality I think it would have held up ok - although of course people prefer the classic line up.

Playing on the sort of material they mocked when walking out the door.... showing they never should've left in the first place.
This is one of the interesting things to me. For all the talk about musical differences...CD and now Absurd showed that basically all of Axl's alternative ideas can still be converted into UYI era rockers/ballads.
It really shows most of the problem wasn't the musical differences but just the miscommunications and lack of mutual respect. Sad really cos they could have sorted this out in 1995 or something.

Other than a smaller gravity well...how is it easier to leave a place that has no facilities whatsoever?
Yeah I see what you mean...but i think it's just that there's not much stopping you...like the moon as 1/6 of the gravity of earth...and there's no atmosphere...no wind...nothing to create any drag or interference when blasting off. So it's basically piss easy compared to even getting a plane going on earth.
The way I see it the insane miracle is that nothing broke. Like what happens if something breaks...they slowly suffocate up there alone and there's no way to save them. Kinda scary.
The level of precision for this tiny capsule to dock with the module is bat shit insane.
I agree...but then if you look at what Buzz Aldrin has a PHd in from MIT - it's "Line-of-Sight Guidance Techniques for Manned Orbital Rendezvous" - basically the guy is a fucking genius with a boner for getting stuff to bump into each other in space....and he has been given a budget thats something like 150 billion in today's money, and back on earth has an army of similar geniuses in a room double checking his maths on the radio.....while I agree it's insane...when you look at it in that context...it's not unbelievable.

yeah i've been giving it a bit of a flogging.
I still like it overall.
I really hope it's the first of an EP or album though and it's not like "that's this tours gift, see you in 18 months" kinda thing.

There's a reason Axl sings on Black Leather and Pretty Tied Up.
It's like when your ex-girlfriend comes back after cheating on you or something...she's going to be made to prove her worth lol.
The first order will be playing all the CD songs in the set to legitimise them.
The second order will be no reunion album for the first five years.
The third order will be picking the song that most epitomises why you left in the first place and choosing it as the single, and then making you take credit for that.
I will make you prove to me that you love me, so hard, that you will never dare leave my ass again.

what's the problem with the trip back?
Luna gravity is less, easier to leave, and meeting up two craft in space is kinda buzz aldrin's thing....

Friendship is what allows you to suggest mods to songs without being a cunt though.
Like it would allow Axl to say to Slash "hey fucko, that solo in Absurd is the shit, but I notice when you jam it with Richard in rehearsal you shred out like motherfucker, maybe try another take and do it here in the control room?" and then Slash can say to Axl "Good call about that solo Fucko, by the way, seeing as the second verse was fucking epic, maybe we could have a third and fourth verse that isn't just half the first verse again?"
Then after an awkward glance, and a 35 year freeze on the project while you remorselessly practise black magic to kill the other guy, you laugh and realise that your friendship brings you together in hatred of cunts online like monkeychow who never wrote dick...and moreover...you get to call each other fucko.

They're not genuine friends....and haven't been in over two decades.
Yeah that's probably the main problem, and I think being middle aged and rich isn't going to help them re-kindle that either.
Like I don't even know how middle aged dudes hang out, for most of my mates and I it's been somewhat impossible after all the wives and kids come along hhahahahaha

The recording of appetite was not the writing of appetite though.
The writing of those songs happens when they were not apart but in the "hell house" era and on the infamous seattle tour and similar bonding experiences.
I get what you guys are saying that they arn't 21.
But I also think if you want to capture some organic energy you need to act somewhat organically. Left to their own Slash will send Axl a CD full of completed guitar songs missing vocals - which makes it hard to hit lyrical inspiration and Slash will get a CD from Axl of piano or computer compositions where all he can do is play solos around the existing structures.
Of course they can make great stuff that way but it's not a recipe for either to push the other out of his comfort zone which is kinda what was happening when they hung out and blended styles.
