Former GUNS N' ROSES and current VELVET REVOLVER bassist Duff McKagan was interviewed on Eddie Trunk's "Friday Night Rocks" radio show on New York's Q104.3 FM this past Friday, November 21. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On whether he's heard GUNS N' ROSES' long-awaited new album, "Chinese Democracy", and what his thoughts are on it:

"I just heard the single, 'Chinese Democracy', and I heard it at the gym when I was working out. So I didn't give it… It wasn't like I sat down in a quiet room and listened to it and analyzed it. And I probably wouldn't. I think Axl's [Rose]… obviously he's a really talented guy and I shared a big part of my life with him, but that was a long time ago for me.

"I've been asked more about this record, starting about 8-9 years ago, and I probably know the least about the record. It's not like I don't pay attention to what's going on in music. But I've got a really short attention span. You know, I'll hear something… I heard a song by this band SHINY TOY GUNS last week — and these guys are killer; I love 'em — and then that'll be gone in about a week.

"As far as Axl's new record, I'm sure there's probably amazing stuff on there, just know there. I've only got that one song and a listen at a gym to go off, so I can't really say that much about it. But how do I feel about it? Good for him that this record's finally coming out. Obviously, I wish him the best. I'm glad that people that have been waiting for this record have something to finally go get."

"The band that we formed twenty-something years ago is a completely different thing, and that's been over for… wow, 15 years. But I know Axl; he's a perfectionist, in a good way, musically. So I know he's not gonna let something come out that sucks — at least in his mind. That counts for something with me. He and I, we shared a lot of good times, some crappy times, but when you look at the glass, it's definitely more than half full for me."

On VELVET REVOLVER's singer search:

"The only guy [out of all the people that have been rumored to be the new VR singer] we ever played with, and he was great, [was] Royston Langdon from SPACEHOG. And he was everything a singer should be — a great singer, a great guy, and an odd character — but there was just something that was missing, and it wasn't anything that he could have done differently. A ton of singers, through our management, have turned in their vocals on two songs of ours that aren't released. Once you get up over, say, 40 singers, it's hard to listen to listen and distinguish them all. If you sit down and listen to 10 guys, you're not giving the tenth guy the same listen you are the first guy. So we've gotta figure out how to go about this. I don't think any of the guys we've heard so far are 'THE' guy, and I don't think we can go out with a guy who's just good — we have to have somebody that's amazing. Scott [Weiland, VELVET REVOLVER's former frontman] was an amazing singer. I don't think people would really buy it if we went out with somebody who's just, sort of, good."

VELVET REVOLVER recently parted ways with RCA Records (a Sony BMG label), the record company that released the group's first two full-length albums.

VELVET REVOLVER's 2004 debut, "Contraband", has sold 1.98 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Its follow-up, "Libertad", has shifted a little over 300,000 units in the U.S. since its July 2007 release.

For Mark Silverman of Milford, it was a day he's been thinking about for more than a decade. A Guns N' Roses fan for as long as he can remember, Silver left Best Buy Sunday with five copies of the band's just-released "Chinese Democracy" on CD and one vinyl copy.

"I've been waiting for 15 years," he said while standing in front of a display with hundreds of GNR CDs and LPs. "I'm buying a couple for co-workers and keeping the record and a couple CDs for myself. After all this time, I want to (bump up the sales) numbers for the band."

Guns N' Roses last released an album of original music in September 1991, during the first Bush administration. A lot has changed in the world since, but if this retailer is any indication, the band still has plenty of fans. "Chinese Democracy" has been rumored for release for the last eight years, yet the disc finally hit stores Sunday, but only Best Buy. The band has an exclusive arrangement with the retailer. The album's release has become so mythical that soft drink brand Dr. Pepper announced in March that it would give every person in America a free can of cola if the album came out in 2008.

Around Best Buy, signs advertising the release called the disc "music's most anticipated album ever." The store anticipated brisk sales for the work, not just today but throughout the holiday season.

"We've already almost sold out of the LPs," said General Manager James Diaz of Meriden. "We have thousands of copies in stock and we expect a ton of sales, especially with Black Friday coming."

"Chinese Democracy" was being sold Sunday for $11.99 on CD, and $19.99 for the two-record LP, which also includes a code to download the music for free. Many customers didn't know about the vinyl release, and had to make a decision when arriving at the store.

"I've been waiting for Axl to come back with this forever," said Bill Scaife of Ansonia while holding both the CD and the vinyl. "From what I've heard of it online, it's completely different in a good way. It's good enough for me to buy two copies, I hope."

Scaife was just one of many leaving the store with multiple copies of "Chinese Democracy," which features no original GNR members except for singer/pianist Axl Rose. The album is rumored to cost more than $13 million to produce, so brisk sales like the ones Sunday will certainly be welcome by the band's label, Geffen.

"I never thought it would come out," said Pedro Navarro of West Haven. "It's been 15 years. I had to come and get it today, man. I can't wait to listen to it."

Over the years, much of the album has leaked online. Many fans purchasing the album Sunday have heard nine of the 14 tracks already. Plus, the band started streaming "Chinese Democracy" on its MySpace page Thursday.

"So far it sounds good," said Andrew Wood of Darien, who first went to other stores Sunday morning to purchase the album without realizing it was only to be sold at the one retailer. "I've listened to the old demos and stuff, and I like it. But I hope it's good. After all this time, it'd kind of stink if the album wasn't good."

German TV station Pro7 aired a two-minute report on the release of GUNS N' ROSES' long-awaited new album, "Chinese Democracy", which included interviews with the band's fans and a short chat with Sven Kilthau-Lander, senior director of promotion at Universal Music Germany (international division). Watch the report below.

In other news, one GUNS N' ROSES fan has posted a short video clip of a truck advertising the "Chinese Democracy" album on the streets of Tokyo, Japan. The fan says, "It must have come past me about 5 or 6 times within an hour."

"Chinese Democracy" was released in the U.S. exclusively through Best Buy. The 14-song set is available on CD, vinyl, and as a download.

One new song, "Shackler's Revenge", debuted on September 14 through the Rock Band 2 video game, while another, called "If The World", can be heard in the new film "Body of Lies".

"Chinese Democracy" is the first album of new material from GUNS N' ROSES since 1991's "Use Your Illusion I" and "Use Your Illusion II".

I think he means he gave up the ghost or facade of what remained of his pride by further exposing his emotions throughout not only the lyrics of that track, but the album itself. The tough guy wearing his heart on his sleeve, so to speak. It's really a beautiful song.

A have to eat crow in front of a lot of people after that ... catastrophe.

Tyler and Perry just got interviews on the red carpet. At first, Steve didn't seem to want to talk about what they were presenting, so I had my fingers crossed. Then Joe said it was gonna be Artist of the Year. They even ran a scroll underneath that confirmed an Artist of the Year award being presented at the end of the show by them. Obviously, GN'R wasn't nominated. Does this kill the rumor? Actually, not entirely. They are there. They are closing the show. Time will tell.

Here we are. It took 14 years, but the day that every Gunner's been waiting for, some more secretly than others (you know who you are), is finally here. Release day. Not leak day. Not "I received my pre-order early" day. Release day. Thought we'd never have one of those again? I did. It's with a heavy heart that I, as a fan, end this chapter in my life. And that's exactly what it is, its own chapter. Over the past decade and a half, there's always been that one constant of the waiting and anticipation. When the leaks happened, we were special. It's like we were let in on some great cosmic secret not meant for everyone's ears. Not yet. But now it's something for the world to share in, whether they like it or not. So what happens next is anyone's guess. Reunion? Quite possibly. Touring CD? Time will tell. But for right now, for today, everyone can come today and celebrate the fact that for better or worse it's finally happened. The best fuckin' band in the world just released a new album. Happy CD day to all you Gunners. And to all those opposed....

I think the Spears thing is just a conclusion a lot of media outlets would come to right now. Doesn't mean it's not GN'R. This is more of a confirmation SOMETHING is up than we had last night. Keep them fingers crossed Gunners.

Spears To Make Surprise Appearance At AMAs?

Britney Spears is reportedly set to thrill fans with a surprise set at the American Music Awards on Sunday.

The Toxic hitmaker is rumoured to be taking to the stage at the event at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre to mark her comeback to the music scene with forthcoming album Circus.

And host Jimmy Kimmel is adamant the event's organisers are planning a spectacular secret performance, but that they won't tell him what it is.

The funnyman tells E! Online, "They have these surprises that 75 people on the crew know about, but they won't tell the host.

"Apparently, there is some big surprise. I sent... the producer an email yesterday and he was like, I can't tell you."

If Spears did play a set at the ceremony, she's be in good company - childhood rival Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Leona Lewis,Taylor Swift and Kanye West are all slated to perform.

But Kimmel is hoping Spears won't make a surprise appearance at the show - because he once upset the singer by locking a Kevin Federline impersonator in a box and dumping him in the sea for a skit at the 2006 American Music Awards - just weeks after the former couple's divorce plans were announced.

The ceremony will be broadcast live by ABC on Sunday.
