I don't like country music, so I'm not an expert, but I don't recall anybody starting in pop and being hugely successful in country after that.

I've heard a couple of DLR solo songs. They sound so damn corny and dated, the ones I've heard. bUt I'm probably wrong. I do prefer Roth to Hagar in the VH setting though.

Well, they are dated now, but at the time, it was what was happening then taken over the top.  Dave came off as an ego-maniac and he played the part well.  Dave TV was hilarious.  Who else could remake California Girls and Just a Gigilo and make them into hits?

Then again i think to myself, if labels didn't exist...would I know who these acts are?

That's why they sign 2 or 3 album deals.  Get the exposure from the label to make it, then do your own thing.  The labels can exist, the band can exist and the fans can get treated better than they are right now.

They are just grasping for straws.  They are losing their grip on any chance of saving themselves, so they are desperately trying anything to keep them relative.

I'm surprised someone hasn't tried to claim public domain on them yet.  The music is everywhere, not just online.  Why don't they go after companies that produce radios with a tape deck that can record off the radio?  If someone is playing their radio too loud, are they going to charge you for being able to hear it?  What about if you have a splitter for your MP3 player headphone jack?  When we go to concerts, will there be an additional RIAA fee because almost all the songs you hear were recorded before you hear them?  At some point, the rediculousness has to stop.

I'll post my REM list, but its mostly the hits.

1. Orange Crush
2. Ignoreland
3. Bittersweet Me
4. The One I Love
5. Bang and Blame
6. Drive
7.Whats the Frequency Kenneth
8. Its the End of the World
9.Losing my Religion
10.Fall on Me

If I was going to put a list together just on hits, most of these would make it for me.  Much like guns N' Roses, I tend to like the songs that weren't overplayed more than the ones that were or the songs that "speak to me" for whatever reason.  The only song on this list I could do without is Ignoreland - not that it's bad, just not one of my favorites.

I agree - I thought DLR would be able to sustain a solo career with the band he had going.  Good songs, good vocals, great guitar work.  I'm not sure what really hurt him, but I think he's one of the best frontmen from the 80s.

I think every major act should do this.  I guess the record company helps get them to a large audience, but once that happens, the fans will seek you.  New acts should sign a 2 album deal - 3 at most - and then release their own music.  They will make more money and it will cost us less to support them.

#6408 Re: The Sunset Strip » The Video Game Console Thread » 958 weeks ago

I've been thinking about getting Call to Duty 4 for the PS3.  I don't usually like those types of games, but it sounds like you can get into some pretty fun games online.  That's really the only drawing point for me so far.

I played GH III once so far.  I've never played any of the Guitar Hero games, so it was a bit of an adjustment for me.  Seems like it's going to be a pretty cool game - I wasn't expecting to like it going in.

R.E.M.

1:  Find the River
2:  Binky the Doormat
3:  Country Feedback
4:  Fall on Me
5:  It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I feel Fine)
6:  Me in Honey
7:  What's the Frequency, Kenneth?
8:  (Don't Go Back To) Rockville
9:  Let Me In
10: Everybody Hurts

Tough list to make - I never owned an REM album when the girl I was dating at the time wanted to go see them live.  I bought Monster (the tour they were on) so I would at least know a couple songs they were going to play and liked it a lot.  I went back and bought the rest of their albums after attending the concert.

I used to hate Everybody Hurts - I think I was 18 or 19 when it came out and really into little more than Guns N' Roses at the time.  Now that I'm older and have been through more in life, I find it to be a great song to sing/scream at the top of your lungs when things are tough.

I think I could make an 11 - 20 list and like it almost as much as this one.

It will be his final work with this lineup no matter what in my opinion.  Likely his final work overall, but Axl has surrounded himself with enough yes men that they might talk him into trying again.  Not sure the guys in the band would want to hang around for that.
