#691 Guns N' Roses » Suggest a marketing plan for CD (just for fun) » 919 weeks ago

With recent developments in the GNR world, it seems like marketing issues are holding up the long-awaited release of new material from the band.  Perhaps it's a disagreement between the label and Mr. Rose about how to market the product to fans so to earn the greatest returns.  Declines in CD sales over the past few years have certainly caused record execs and bands to come up with creative ways to promote products and to encourage consumers to buy rather than download for free.

Out of interest and maybe a little boredom with the lack of recent news, I'm curious as to what you'd all suggest to the band or label to unleash this sucker.  The idea here (just for fun, of course) is to find out what approach the band and label should take to reach necessary sales in order to break even or (maybe) turn a profit.  Creativity is encouraged and feedback on ideas is always welcomed.  And if you have a few ideas, hell, share them all!

My idea is to include a bonus booklet and maybe DVD with the album (as a special edition) to encourage people to buy.  The booklet could be some sort of a biography of all the members or a summary of the complications encountered from the beginning to the end of the project.  The DVD could be concert clippings of new songs as played by the new band.  While the extra items may increase the cost of the final product, I think the hardcores will all want their hands on the booklet, reducing lost revenue from piracy.  The DVD and album are easily pirated, but the booklet at least gives an incentive to buy.

As for promotion?  How about milking the media?  Rolling Stone and Classic Rock aren't ignoring the band, and they each reach large potential consumer groups.  Pop a few interviews (and maybe cover stories) in those magazines about the long awaited album finally coming out (no, really!) and suddenly a number of people are interested.  It's also cheaper than paying for advertising space.  With that said, it wouldn't hurt to shove the band down our throats with public appearances, a full tour (only after a release date is firmly in place), and meet and greets with the fans.

What does everyone else think?

Undecided as of yet, but I'm working till 6 (don't worry, that's almost 2 hours before kickoff) so I won't be able to cook anything extravagant.  Sucks that I'll miss the annual Montreal Canadiens Superbowl day hockey game though.  That's usually my pregame show.

Maybe I'll call up all my buddies and we'll head to Don Cherry's (local sports bar) for wings and nachos.

Fantastic show; it aired on CBC up here while I was growing up, so I was able to relate a lot to the Kevin character.  Actually, it was still in syndication here up until last year some point and I watched it regularly.  I had never thought Winnie Cooper was hot though, her teeth were always weird.  She definitely got hot though.

That Wayne kid, yeah, I've been watching Diff'rent Strokes reruns lately and he was part of Arnold's gang of friends when he was in high school (along with the guy who played Weasel on Family Matters).  Pretty funny to see that actor outside of the Wonder Years though.  His career went no where after that.

Of course, as a kid, I related more to Fred Savage's little brother's Boy Meets World, just because it appealed more to my generation (and Topanga Lawrence pisses all over Winnie Cooper on the hotness radar) and it was more comedic.  Nonetheless, I still think The Wonder Years was a fantastic show as it conquered real life issues we all faced in youth (much like Degrassi).

I think this will be huge if they do a tour.  Millions of women between 20 and 40 all over the world be trying to get tickets.  It's going to be a lot bigger than The Spice Girls.

New Kids on the Block Exclusive New Song!
Posted on Jan 30 2008 - 11:40am by eGossip Staff

New Kids on the Block fans are going crazy trying to figure out if a reunion is in the works by the five boys who melted the hearts of millions of girls over a decade ago.

Members of the highly popular band from the late 80's and early 90's include brothers Jordan and Jonathon Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg and Danny Wood. But is the much anticipated comeback really happening or are the former boy-toys simply toying with our minds?

The NKOTB official website had been dormant for years but is now back up and running, leading many to believe that the former boy band is preparing for a reunion.

And while many were hesitant to believe the news, the updated site now features a teaser to a new song by the band with words reading "Are you Ready?"

The new video on the site shows clips of the band circa the 80's and 90's while displaying the following messages one by one:

"They rose from the streets of Boston. They influenced a generation. They sold over 70 million albums and grossed more than one billion dollars. Then they walked away from it all. Millions of fans around the world await their return. Are you ready?"

Meanwhile, are prospective employers allowed to contact past employers without the employee's position?  Here, the ethical thing to do would be to ask for references and people would provide names and contacts of people who would give them a good reference.  Prospective employers also ask if it's appropriate to contact past employers.  I mean, if the guy was fired from Best Buy and listed them on his resume, you'd think he'd expect the other companies to contact Best Buy to see what he was like as a worker.  The logical thing would be to remove Best Buy from your resume altogether.

I assume you meant "permission" as the final word,

Correct... I shouldn't type first thing in the morning (before I get out of bed).

Yeah, HR is usually contacted to verify employment, but as far as I know, they aren't contacted as referees unless they are specifically listed.  It's possible that the HR lady volunteered the information, but I'd be curious to find out if the other companies are drilling for this information.  Meanwhile, it's not even HR's responsibility to provide references.  That would be a direct supervisor's job.

Thats the part that always bothers the piss out of me about these things. Let's say it's 100% real, I still don't get having Axl sign a pickguard for a guitar no one in GNR has ever played.

Most people that want autographs, can't really afford £30,000 guitars.

You can get Epi Les Pauls for like $400 last I checked.

Yeah and I've seen the real classic Gibsons for less than $6000.  I've yet to see a $50,000 guitar unless it's a custom made classic or something.

Cool stuff Bono.  Habs are tearing it up this year and I don't have you in the NHL thread to nutswing with me.  What gives? Haha  Good to see you back.

I've never understood people getting stuff autographed that they use everyday.  An album or merchandise or something works, but it's ridiculous to bring a guitar out for a singer to sign.  The only thing I can think of is this guy wanted a new guitar so he gets someone to autograph it and he's auctioning it off so he can buy a better one.  Then again, that's smart business.

Someday that's going to work!  I think that if the album's not back in Axl's hands by the end of the year (for subsequent rework, of course) then the album will likely come out this year.  If it's in the label's hands, it's only a matter of time before it's unleashed, one way or another.  I can't fathom why they'd hold the album for an extended period of time.  Unless of course, they're shopping the GNR contract and albums around to other companies.  If that's the case, we're probably in for the long haul.

Here's a marketing idea... release the bloody thing on vinyl first.  Anyone who wants to own the album first will have to buy it in that form or download shitty quality MP3s.  After a couple of weeks, release it in other forms.  If that doesn't work, you've learned your lesson.  The big hope of course is that they don't spend more on production, shipping, and advertising than they're going to bring in on album sales.  Anything made above that will give them some sort of revenue to offset the costs.
