The band was great, but it wasn't the old band, and wasn't even the 2002 band. And I think that was the fault. Had that 2006 band come out, and made 2002 look foolish, it would've been different.

The 02 band wrote the songs and i'll give credit to that....but generally the live peformances are preferable to 2002.

Both Axl and Robin's peformances were noticibly stronger in 2006 than in 2002.

I think there's a lot of generalisations on both sides.

People like to talk about how slash runs down axl...but  I actually think in general slash tried to avoid talking about axl most of the time.

However he is pushing his own career both as a solo artist (the new record) , session player for established artists, and in other bands (Snakepit, and VR) and does the traditional industry thing and works the media circut appropriately when he has music to promote.

The media always wants to talk about GNR cos it was massive and controversial and so sells copies. And so they always ask slash stuff, and sometimes he cracks a little and says something. But considering the volume of interviews he's done, the extent of the drama in gnr, and the length of time he and axl have been on bad terms, I feel overall he's been mild in his remarks.

Likewise, I'm not surprised if there's inaccuracies. There's time delays, there's drugs, there's issues of perception, there's opinion. I don't really think it's a situation where anyone can be right or wrong.

Yes I think keeping the brand may help some people show up to shows and sell records, but it costs just as much in lost fans, negative reviews that focus on that issue and other drama.

I think Axl kept it for emotional reasons rather than anything else though. It sounded like that from his interview. It may not make sence to the rest of the world, and causes problems, but it felt like the right thing for that part of his creative energy i guess.

Nice one! Did he say anything we havnt read before already?

Nothing that was entirely shocking...i mean it's pretty obvious his views on most of the stuff, obviously he's pro-reunion, regrets that drugs have fucked up his life, is defensive about his role in the legacy, and that kind of thing.

I know there's a lot of anti adler people around, and even if some of what happened to him is his own fault, I can see it would be tough to take from his side of things.

I mean he achieved his childhood dream of making it in music, gets kicked out of a band known for drug use by other people on drugs. He admits causing some problems but points out that there were a lot of issues that didn't concern him (during the writing of UYI) and felt he was singled out. Then he had to watch the band go massive on UYI, the other guys do VR and then all the strange new era gnr stuff now. Meanwhile his life was in the toilet on drugs. Like i say....i'm not saying he is right or that he didnt make his own situation to an extent...but thats got to be pretty tough for any human. How does one live with that.

Anyway...so he's obviously got some bias about what happened to him, and what should happen. But overall he came across as back having his act togehter, and having a pretty good sence of humour about the situation and the other guys considering everything.

He actually was positive about Matt which surprised me. He said basicly that recently matt has been more respectful of steven's position as the original drummer...and that therefore matt is an ok guy and that he (steven) just didnt like it when people forget about him or pretend like he never existed and it was always matt.

He said adler's appetite is looking to record a new album in a couple of months. I think he said july but i could be wrong about that.

And he told some funny anicdotes about the other guys.

Oh and he also said that he consider's slash's book to be pretty much true, and that he is working on his own version of events, which he says when viewed with what slash has written will be like reading the other 50% of stuff they got up to as kids.

#7686 Re: Guns N' Roses » Revisiting the Billboard Interview » 885 weeks ago

yeah exactly.

It's all together possible that the record company is taking that kind of approach, I hate it when people talk about relevancy as that's a load of shit, cos the industry manipulates what's relevant, but I think as more and more time passes, without any kind of strong commerical backing for new music, the GNR brand will become more and more associated with it's historical importance, classic rock, the 80s-90s. That success was massive and will always be remembered...but the way to capatalise on that from a record company sence is going to be reunions and the old line up.

In 1995 when Axl when it was only a few years since GNR were doing massive numbers, it would seem a more plausable business decision to invest millions behind a new poject spearheaded by Axl.

As time passes and the GNR brand becomes more of a legacy artist...it's less attractive for them to spend those dollars on anything other than the line up with a known pre-existing and still massive fan base.

However that's not to say that a new gnr couldn't do well with the right financial backing, it's just finding people willing to take those risks that is the hard bit. From their perspective its all risk and the easy money back is elsewhere.

But the thing is I fully believe Axl won't bend to them...so it's likely to just be a stalemate to death....the only way a renuion of any kind would happen is if the guys themselves forgive each other and sort shit out on a personal level...and there's no sign of that happening....but it's going to have nothing to do with labels and money and whatever if it ever did happen.

At the same time we have this great album, it killed the curiosity for the world. Had the album stayed legend, and never been released, it would've always been a myth.

Seriously, the myth has been greater than the actual album itself, as good as it is.

I disagree with that. The "myth factor" was fun for us fans, who spend our days on here obsessing over the next record, but it was bad for the 'brand' of GNR.

Sure some people we're swept along by the intruge but not as many as were lost through inactivity and silence. You have a situation where the band announces a tour, and the responce is "why will that happen? He can't even put out an album" - and all news in the media, no matter what was always followed by a disertation that Axl's gone mental, that he can't release music, the year count, the waiting, comparisions to brian wilson, talk of kicking out the ex-members. while to an extent all press is good press, the myth forced this shit to be the focus of the band for decades. If the band had released more material in a timely fashion and behaved more normally, it would have been better.

Steven Adler was running a drum clinic here in Melbourne Australia tonight.

Although I don't play drums..(i'm a guitarist)....I went along....it's GNR afterall!!

Steve demoed the intro to Mr Brownstone....and also played all of Welcome to the Jungle, Nighttrain, Sweet Child of Mine, Rocket Queen and Paradise City along with a backing track.

He spoke about drums and his life, and took questions from the crowd. He then took the time to personally meet the fans and sign autographs and pose for pictures and stuff.

He was a very funny guy, told some great jokes about his life. Was asked a lot of questions about GNR, including his opinions on Chinese Democracy, Axl, Matt Sorum, Duff, Izzy, drugs, reunions and all the stuff you'd expect and came across as very candid, honest, funny, and a really good guy.

I know he's had some problems in the past, but I still have a ton of respect for his work, and it's good to see him healthy and getting his life back on track. Here's the pic I got with him:
