But in "failure" I mean it like this; no one I know in my personal life but 3 (I think) people, bought the album. Everyone else I know, which between work and social is quite a bit, either didn't buy it or didn't even bother downloading it.

No radio stations play CD songs, no matter how much threads get started claiming otherwise. No one talks or cares about Guns N' Roses or at least Chinese Democracy outside of these boards. Bands with a successful product aren't in that situation.

Yeah I agree on that. Although for me it's also kinda a feature of a number of bands I'm into. Like i really like Buckcherry and similar stuff and its rare as hell that I meet anyone in real life who also follows them.

I know what you mean though, as much as we don't need others to also like something to make it good, if it had have taken off to a larger extent with the general public, the demand would create more stuff for us to enjoy. I remember back in the UYI days when GNR stuff was everywhere...interviews...news....it was pretty cool.

What we need now is for both Slash and Chris to love the experience of working together...and realise they should do it again.....

Could happen...VR started cos Slash jammed with Duff and matt again somewhere and went like "oh yeah...that's right be have loads of chemestry" or something similar from memory.....so basicly we just need Chris to feel that he got something out with slash that he hasn't done before or in a while and we may have some hope on the VR front....

But then it's unlikely i guess. I imagine cornell would be anti another supergroup...and he seems into his solo stuff.

I love the album and I personally view it as a complete and total failure.

Interesting. Why? Like under what standard? As a GNR album? As an album from a modern band? It's all about perspective to me. Like what makes you view it like that?

My position is this:

Musically: Successful. Love it.

Sales A : Compared to normal band successful, came in at #14 worldwide, enough to continue the band.

Sales B: Compared to GNR historical level of world domination  - very very poor.

Marketing: very poor. I think the music was good enough to attract some new fans, but the implimentation of this record was SO badly handled. The delays. The silence. The lack of promo. No interviews. No tour. Not playing the media games that can attract attention to the work.

Production: Some issues. Problems with the vinyl versions. Cd booklet bad. etc. Cover art not to everyone's taste. Mixing issues.

So IMO...there's been a lot of stuff that could have been handled better for sure, especially when you have a level of fame and stardom that a band like GNR/Axl does.

But fundementally I couldn't say it's been a failure, not when the've sold enough records for the band to continue, and not when the artistic product underneath remains at a very very high standard.

And scarily, there are some people in the fan world, that Axl could murder an entire orphanage of children on Christmas eve with various farm implements, and they'd find some way to rationalize it in their head, and continue to defend the guy.

Hahha...

For me it comes back to the reason I like the band in the first place.

Personally I enjoy the music, and that isn't altered by whatever else happens. So i guess you could say I can divorse the person from their talent in general.

I think Axl is the best rock vocalist i've ever heard. And he could turn into the easter bunny, give billions to charity or set off a nuke killing millions and he will always be that best rock vocalist to me. So I may approve or dissaprove of his actions in life, but I'm always going to be a fan because of his music.

I think the same about Michael Jackson now you mention him. Incredible tallent. Some of this other stuff with the kids or whatever is way disturbing and I disaprove of that (if it's true) but it's not going to change the fact that MJ is one of the most gifted peformers in years.

I'm not a fan of Axl because of his PR skills, and I'm not a fan of MJ because of his babysitting abilities...i'm fans of these people because of their music, and so will remain so pretty much whatever the hell else happens.

but you're going after the people that downloaded the leaks or downloaded this album without buing it.

you're standing here saying they are not true fans. well, here i am.

I think you are still a fan...but I think part of atari's original point stands:

It came up in the context of if most people who D/L songs on the net pay for them latter after trialing them.

I thought he was saying that while a lot of fans of the band on here downloaded the album, and then went and bought a paid copy, it's less likely that casual listeners and non-fans would do this.

Which isn't to say someone with a deep interest in GNR (like yourself) who doesn't buy the record isn't a fan. (Although TBH i do feel you should to support what you are interested in - but that's a seperate issue).

So what I mean is....some people who downloaded the album would have been people with less interest in GNR than a fan like you, and basicly were just checking it out, if there had been no leaks and no internet theft in general, then those "experment" type listeners may have purchased it to check it out.

YES YES YES!!

THERE is a god!!

Sorry to get wound up but i've been fucking dying for something like this for so long. Slash needs to work with dudes like Cornel and Axl who have massive vocal range and skills! And i often find cornel too experimental for my tastes (like audioslave guitar solos hurt me..it's all effects). The idea of slash's guitar style and chris' vocals is SOOO SEXY.

I wish it was more than one song though...as chris has so many styles...it could be something too calm (although they're beautiful too) but i wanna hear him go nuts.

Olorin - i'd recommend the tracks: "Slaves and Bulldozers" from Soundgarden's 'Badmotorfinger' album. And maybe 'Show Me How To Live' from Audioslave's selftitled album, or if you like something slower and moodier then 'Last Remaining Light' from that album as well.

#7777 Re: Guns N' Roses » The Possibility of a Guns N' Roses '09 Summer tour » 888 weeks ago

Yeah...i've often thought the major thing that frustrates fans is the periods of silence where we don't undertsand what is happening in his world. It leads people to speculate and get angry and talk shit, and it seems axl then reads that shit and doesn't like it.

Obviously Axl can do whatever he likes, and is under no obligation to do stuff for us, but I sometimes wonder if he had some kind of online blog, or showed up at HTGTH once every month or two or something more regular, how much of the fan base would chill out.

Sort of how trent posts from time to time on stuff at NIN, sometimes its a rant, sometimes its stuff about the band, and sometimes its ramble...but at least you know he's alive, what's in his mind, and have some idea that stuff goes on that we can't understand but appriciate its going on.

Then again, it must be tough to live with the type of public crap axl often gets in the media and from fans. I'm not saying he's a saint, but I also think there's a % of people - like youtube posters and stuff - who just want to hang some shit. So maybe he just doesn't need anymore exposure to it.

While I think some people do what james does and "trial" music with a download and then buy everything they like and delete the rest. I wonder:

1. If it was impossible to download some times people would take a punt on an unknown. As a kid i'd often buy vinyal totally unheard based on the rep of the band or soemthing and it was hit or miss if i ended up enjoying the record or not. James' methods would only allow for the hits to get purchased.

2. I don't think everyone is as honest as james. Basicly, if you can get something for free why pay for it when times are tough. Yes theres arguments why people choose to support the band and stuff, but i think a lot of people would be like "fuck them they're already rich"

3. You might have intentions to buy it eventually. But if you dl a lot of stuff, sooner or later the list to buy gets a lot more than the disposable income....stuff would have to get missed.

when it actually got released the media couldn't care less.

Thats because the album was as stale as a loaf of my grandma's raisin bread. They had already reviewed it. Ron adding something and Frank pounding a drum didn't warrant a second review under the media's microscope.

But there only would have been one review if it hadn't leaked.  The reviews came from leaked material.

I think the album was sucessful in the sence that other bands sell less and continue to make albums, so i reject the idea that's been put forward by some that this band is dead due to the sales figures of CD. However, I also think that this album would have sold higher if it wasn't for the leaks, in particualr the last leak that was virtually everything.

the whole situation is just retarded.

I agree it's retarded...but it may not be Axl driving the jail train...could be that someome at the label got the FBI wound up or whatever.
