Had they thought the album was great and had any chance of succeeding commercially, they would have supported it and promoted it in an instant. The fact that they didn't is very telling of what they thought of it.
But it's also kinda a self fullfilling prophesy. They decide it's not going to do well, so don't push it properly in the media, and so it doesn't do well.
Even aside from the things GNR did strangely (no tour, interviews etc) the actual release from the labels was cocked up in Australia. There was zero promo in my stores, less than extremely unknown bands even get, and the rep from the store had no idea it was comming out, and didn't even believe me it was when we had the dates confirmed and the best buy stories running in the usa and everything.
I'm not saying it would have been beyonce, but GNR has a pretty strong casual fanbase in Australia i'd say. Dudes who remember November Rain and that kind of thing even if they arn't big fans.
Both shows in my city in 2007 sold out despite the new band and all the politics...We like our classics over here. Some of these people would have checked out a new album for the sake of it...but they didn't even know it existed.
I'm just saying I think someone in the industry side of things dropped the ball on this one. As, quality of the record aside, I'm certain any band with the historical branding GNR has had, could have capatalised on that history and the current interest in old school acts (metallica, ac/dc) to promote sales way more than was done.
Then you add to that equation that Axl and co also didn't play the normal game and you have the current situaton.
#7792 Re: Dust N' Bones & Cyborg Slunks » Slash to be on American Idol next week » 888 weeks ago
You may not like them, but it's hard to argue with it. I think AI is very mainstream, but I also think it's one of the many things wrong with mainstream.
Agreed. I think it's very mainstream.
Although i must say, despite my philosophical objections to AI (karokee etc), I downloaded the episode to see Slash, and I thought that Adam guy sang that Led Zep song pretty damn well.
This will prob be me bullshitting on...but I think a lot of the rock mysteque is lost on Idol. Like, say Adam was made VR's lead singer. We've all seen him dress in non-rock gear, and be out there singing songs from musicals and other genres or whatever else they've done on the show. It's not going to have the enigma factor that it would have if he'd come out of no-where and the first exposure to him we had was with a VR image and branding, and singing rock shit only. It just interested me as a thought. Cos i heard him sing Led Zep and thought "that's the kind of voice they need in VR" - but to me it wouldnt be as cool now if they appointed him than if i'd never heard of him. (although from a selling perpective this way is prob better as he'd bring over the idol fan base maybe)
Maybe it's my mind. But part of the rock celeb thing is that these people are larger than life. It's why it was so risky of metallica to do "Some kind of Monster" too. Like hetfield was a rock-god, super human - and revealing his human side for the first time. But these shows like idol - their stars seem less like gods and more clearly real people. They don't have that enigma thing that other rock musicans can generate.
#7793 Re: Guns N' Roses » The Latest Tirade Against "Chinese Democracy" And Us, By Mick Wall » 888 weeks ago
The sad bit for a journalist like Mick Wall is that he used to know and have access to GNR...and now he's reduced to writing about his dreams of axl
I agree with him that it's lame of fans to make hate sites for him. Like seriously? Some people need to grow up.
However I disagree about the album. I enjoy the rockers and the ballads...i like every track in its own way. Also...what is the point in saying if somethign had been done ten years ago...the album wasn't ready in 1999, the "99" irs sounds like shit compared to the final one.
#7794 Re: Guns N' Roses » Chinese Democracy/Rock Band 2 (Tracks Leaking?) » 888 weeks ago
As far as I know all that exists at the moment are tracks with the vocals higher and the instruments lower in the mix. I don't think anyone has like the stems to make real re-mixes or anything yet...or am I wrong?
#7795 Re: Guns N' Roses » Please Play TWAT more when a tour happens » 888 weeks ago
I can't remember any single being successful with as little promotion as GNR has given. I think the public, radio, etc. gave up on the album because they viewed it as Axl just didn't
I think the problem was basicly that GNR wasn't dancing to the established beat.
Sad thing is the quality of the material isn't really very relevant to musical sucesss these days, it's more about the overall business stuff.
IMO chinese is a very high quality album, fantastic even, but lets imagine it wasn't, I don't think that would matter to the general public: it could suck and sell millions IF, and only IF, the rest of the business dance' was done right. Let's face it - there's lots of stinker songs from a musical perspective that have sold buckets of records in history.
The industry is like a machine, radio and TV and print media are all content hungry, the public attention span is increasingly shorter, and 90% of people will eat up what they are told without any critical evaluation. Everyone is out there flogging their own wares. The result of this is that the media will move on fast unless you feed them new stuff...bcause a ton of other people are.
CD was given loads of coverage when there was something to tell. The leaks, the DR Peper thing, that a release date was announced. But once you've written up that story...then X days later you need something new or what are they to do - write it again? Normally a tour would be announced or some interviews would be done...but when these things didn't happen...and everyone else in the world kept pumping out their daily press releases...well I guess the people in the industry just went with what they had. Remember in 06 - there was a bit of a splash when Axl warmed up playing those NYC shows...the media will run with it..when they think stuff is happening....if miore interviews and stuff had happened to coinside with the release...or a tour...generally...if the band had looked to be following the pattern of a normal commerical release...then the media would have gone with it...
Whats the media going to do? work hard to generate and research a good GNR story? or run with a spoon fed easy work package from some rap singer's pr department. It's a no brainer for them. You have to play the game or it's too hard for them.
If chinese had been pushed down our throats the way Ac/Dc marketed Black Ice...i think the kiddies would have rushed out the same way they did for that album....but it wasn't done that way...and hense it's mostly
the hardcores like us who support it.
In a way it's a shame, as I feel it's a great album and I'm sure many many people would like it as much as I do but they're unlikely to be exposed to it.

Even if he didnt nail it 100% I like that axl went for those high notes there...it's my fav bit of the song so its wierd if they skip it. Sounded cool to me anyway....really like what bumble did with the solo too....
#7797 Re: Guns N' Roses » Design Your Ultimate Setlist For GN'R To Play This Year » 888 weeks ago
Actually I think Spaghetti was promoted more..lol...but all things considered....I think this tour is the obvious time to have heavy rotation of CD songs in the set list...obviously the public will also want some classic hits...but a tour showcasing the new material makes sence.
I'll work out my dreamset list when i get home
#7798 Re: Guns N' Roses » Fortus Facebook Page Real? » 888 weeks ago
It has an account for DJ listed as a friend. Which either means it's real or the same guy has more than one fake going I guess.

Oh yeah...i wouldn't get upset about it either...it was more that i happened to hear that boot of it today and realised how kickass it sounded...makes me think a lot of the CD songs could be pretty awesome live.....
