Soundgarden has the right formula.....

Surprise shows and Lollapalooza
Telephantasm release including new song
touring
Live on I5 release
touring
Live to Rise soundtrack song
King Animal album
touring
new album and/or box set of rarities

ALL of this action started TWO years after CD's release. All GNR has accomplished in that time frame is being a touring nostalgia act. Soundgarden has accomplished more in two years than Axl has in 21 years.

When GNR can come within a light year of that kind of action, then I'll be impressed. AFD/CD rehash in Vegas and Indonesia means nothing(no offense to those going to the shows).

That does sound like a better formula than GNR's. Not that I have noticed any of it. Maybe the music is just not that good or maybe it's just not catching on mainstream....?

I don't think ANY gnr-fan would argue that GNR should have done things completly different during the last decade.

With that said. I'm surprised (in a positive way) over the way the new management have handled things. The UCAP-tour seemed cool as fuck, TV-interview coming up, TV-interview last year, the Vegas-thing celebrating a great album at the same time they're focusing on the "newest" release (yeah, I'm not soooo negative about Vegas anylonger. I really like how they've started to focus on the new lineup with banners, posters etc), possible cinema-release of a gig followed by a dvd/bluray (that will also play a part in establishing the "new" guys and further implement the fact that the GNR of the 80's and 90's is a thing for the historybooks.).

Only thing missing for us hardcores, is the elephant in the room: NEW MUSIC. And I do believe we'll hear something sooner rather than later.

that's completely untrue.

for the vast majority of bands there is still the cycle of album-tour-album-tour.

i genuinely do not no of any band or artist who tours as much as GnR withOUT fresh material.

bob dylan's tour is actually called 'the never-ending tour' & he's been on it since the early 90s (if not the late 80's) but even he has managed to release, what, 4/5 albums of original material since GnR dropped the UYI sets.

i'm genuinely past caring about the tour/recording situation. i'm tired of this: 17 feeling.
but what i can't suffer is this apologetic nonsense that it's somehow ok or normal behaviour. hell, even in the stones thread someone made the point that the rolling stones have released more original material this century than GnR have. that is fucked up, plain & simple. & no disguising of the facts will hide the truth, that axl has fucked everything up - the legacy, the enjoyment, the fans & the passion. & his touring, tho it makes some people happy, isn't what will last. what will last is all the wasted opportunities & a handful of great songs.
in all seriousness, it's time for a reality check naltav. now if you wanna present some facts that prove your argument then maybe i'll check myself. but seriously, you're defending the indefensible with an idea - or formula - that doesn't hold water.
i do agree in a lot of ways the business model of the music industry has changed. but really, i don't know what you're seeing or what you're listening to if you think things have changed so much that it's justifiable to be touring an album that's really in effect a decade old, but being polite 5 years old. what other bands are doing that?!

When I'm saying "every band have moved on from that formula", I might have jumped the gun a little. I don't follow other bands as closely as I do GNR. But there sure is a mentality out there of "we could just put on some shows for the sake of playing music (and making a living/maintaining our standard of living)" And I also see that mentality among friends and avarage concert-goers. When a cool band comes to town, the reaction is "Allright, they're a great act, let's go!" The default reaction of "They must be touring a brand new album", not so much......

But when it comes to GNR, I'm in the camp of "release some new stuff allready! Jeezzz!"
But that's the rabid hardcore fan mentality.

To be fair, it's 4 years old.
Like I mentioned. Metallica is not really out there pimping Death Magnetic, wich came out in '08. And as far as I know, they were touring this summer. They are touring to keep their brand alive and to make money.
The fact that you use the term "touring an album", shows me that you might be kinda stuck in an old mentality.

But your point on GNR releasing fewer albums than other acts. THAT I agree with!

In all seriousness, is this not the longest tour in the history of tours?

Then a band like Metallica is also making a run for the longest tour in the history of tours. (No, Lulu doesn't count!)  smile

In all seriousness, it's time to start viewing a "tour" a bit different than shows played by a band between the release of two album. It's a very 90's-ish way of looking at it....

Every band nowadays sure have moved on from that formula.

#74 Re: Guns N' Roses » DJ Ashba on New Material and 'Unique' Vegas Residency » 675 weeks ago

I can see why DJ would rub some fans the wrong way. Especially if you're a fan of or would prefer a reunion.

DJ has not released anything with GNR. Yet he's the most outspoken member of the band at this point.

The guy obviously like to have the spotlight. His 16-year-old emo-look, that stupid taunting he does with his hands as he teases with the WTTJ-intro, posting videos of himself on youtube doing nothing but riding a motorcycle. Tweeting stuff that could've come from Justin Bieber ("Miss you guys!",  I love you all, thanks for helping me reach XXXXXXX followers!!!" etc etc etc.

Never seen a guy try harder to build a brand around himself.

BUT! At the end of the day. It's mostly hardcores like us who follow GNR as close as we do who notice this kind of stuff. Considering Axl's privat and reclusive personality, GNR do need bandmembers who are "out and about".

There are so many things that have happened over the years, that if you pick and choose from events, you can paint every future scenario possible.

I hope you're wrong!

#76 Re: Guns N' Roses » Axl On Kimmel Oct 24th, Live Interview! » 676 weeks ago

Sure, some us may think it's waaay cool that Axl is gonna be on TV (myself included). Because it is a far and few in between event for US.

But I'm not sure anyone is really expecting some grand revelation on an epic scale or that Axl in one big scoop is gonna convince every viewer that Axl fuckin Rose is BACK BABY!!!!
All the comments are pointing on some airtime where he's gonna plug upcuming gigs in Vegas. And that is basicly what every musician/moviestar/director are doing on these kind of shows.

The only small posibility of something MAJOR being said is if Axl has a quick mention that after the Vegas-thing, GNR is gonna release a followup to CD. But that is major for us die-hards only. And that's cool. We all know that the average music fan is not sitting on the edge of their seat waiting for a new album.

Another possible cool result outta this. Axl CAN be very entertaining when being interviewed. I know I cracked up on some of the stuff said on Trunk's radio show. Maybe, just maybe, some of the average viewers will go: "Hey, Axl Rose seems actually like a real funny and cool guy. Who knew...?"

Yeah yeah, I know... A few minutes of airtime is not gonna erase 25 years of bad press bla bla bla.... But we can hope and he can try. No harm. I think some people will be left with a positive impression of him.

You're right. I'm sorry, but I don't see Axl Rose talking as some sort of big deal. I've heard him do it. Ding ding for him. I can talk to.

If you're not in Vegas, no one gives a fuck. Why wasn't Axl doing this fucking shit when they were touring North America?

30-60 minutes of airtime on VH1 doesen't count? smile19
Seemed to me like the rock press was all over it at the time. same as they are now with this Kimmel apperance. It is news!

Seems that the GNR-camp are trying to do a better job on promoting. Kimmel, Vegas, a gig in the fuckin cinemas! C'mon! It's like night and day compared to what we're used to.

Well, I'm actually happy with these three bits of good news. Shows in Vegas, New DVD, TV interview. When it doesn't take much to see the negative in shit on a normal day in GNRland, I'm not going out of my way to find anything negative in these things and be happy for what they are. Not to be sappy or anything. These are actually good things to me.

Same here. All good things if you ask me. I'm glad to hear that this is worldwide for sure. You have no idea how loud that blu ray is going to be played in my house 16

Ditto!

Nothing negative about this so far! Sure there is no CD material in this trailer, but this kind of stuff are usually made by those producing and selling the product/show. Chances are good that the actual show will be full of CD material same as the last three years of touring.

Thinking about how Jarmo has been pimping the idea of some kind of re-release bundled with CDII (or whatever it was), these last tidbits of news are looking pretty exciting!

Even if it leads to nothing it may set some wheels in motion for the future and the record company and the powers that be may be more available for a release if they see Axl willing to get it out there and do proper promo.

Been thinking in these lines myself.

Also, the supposed proshot release of the London show could very well be a "we'll scratch your back, if you scratch our's"-move from the GNR-camp towards the label.
