The Force is an imaginary magical power. We’ve already accepted it as a thing in these movies, but how could we know the limits to this imaginary force?

We don't know the limits as such..but it's about  consistency.

These movies are informed by the series of movies before them - the characters - the situations they are in - they are supposed to be continuations not a complete reboot - so thus we have a sense of what's possible from the previous movies.

Really we know what we've seen to be possible, AND what the last characters in similar situations DID do.

It's logical that unseen abilities or a stronger person might exist.

But these need to be explained in the context of the wider story.

Otherwise we're left to believe either that some characters are just inexplicably strong (even though this is not justified in the plot and indeed runs contrary to the plot of the older films) or we have to wonder if prior characters could have used similar abilities but simply failed to do so (which also doesn't make plot sense when you look at all the films together.)

The closest we have is

Yoda's remark that the burden of a master is that they are outgrown by students. But that alone is problematic - it's awkward if Kylo, Rey and Leia become more powerful than Vader, Yoda and Luke despite very limited training. Unless they give us some plot reason why it should be happening - another chosen one prophecy, or the force becoming more present in the universe, or the blood lines increasing with hybrid vigor...some kinda story reason to explain it needs to happen.

Makes sense.

I might do the same thing when I get a 4k display happening.

I already have a PS4.  I'm thinking about buying an xbox one since the price seems to be coming down mostly to use as a blue ray player, but I could certainly use it for gaming too.  Any pros/cons vs the PS4 that I should be aware of?

Ps4 Pro can do 4k video for streaming and games but not play 4k UHD Bluray movie disks.

I believe the Xbox One X can play UHD 4k Blurays.

Personally I use a projector and am waiting for 4k projectors to go from insane to sensible prices..so it doesn't affect me yet - sticking to my PS4 Pro. But if you're buying one for a blu player make sure it's 4k capable for the future.

Yeah, I mean I enjoyed it a lot to be honest, its a great fun time at the movies.

But the thing that surprised me was how the story really felt disconnected from the previous movie. TFA had given me the real sense of an over arching plan - but TLJ really feels more like they are making it up as they go.

This movie really seemed to kinda keep bits it liked and discard elements it wasn't interested in. Right down to moving the scar on Kylo's face.

I'm really hopeful about Episode 9 though. JJ is back - which I think should provide some consistency.

As for relationships.

Hidden Text:

I'm torn.

As I said above - if she has no relationships she's awkwardly powerful.

Basically i'm ok with people being Skywalkers. As the saga is about the Skywalker family - and it was established from Day 1 that 'the force runs strong in my family' or whatever. This gives anyone who is a skywalker a reason to be involved in the greater history of the galaxy.

When it gets lame is when other characters relatives get involved.

An example - in the prequels I forget the specifics but I think Boba Fett had a tad and he was called Jango Fett and was the basis for the clone army or something.

To me this is incredibly unlikely. Like in Empire I thought Boba was just a pro bounty hunter they used. That his father would also be a person of such significance seems unlikely. Like in their whole universe of worlds and galaxies, the same 4 or 5 families across every generation alter history. it's hard to believe.

It makes plot sense with the skywalkers cos of their blood line powers. But its awkward if Han's grandad was the guy who invented blasters, and Greedo's uncle invented hyperspace or something. Its a galaxy of billions of people. You think some other fresh people would get involved.

So i'm in a hypocritical place.

Generally I think, other than for Skywalkers, is better for people to be fresh families than have some loose relationship to previous character lines. However in the case of Rey - they made her so absurdly powerful so early - that I feel it needs some type of justification in the plot more than what we've been given. A family relationship would do that. But so would some other prophecy or something. There just needs to be some reason other than the producers keenness to show girls are just as good jedi. Because then it would be bad writing.

I thought they did explain why she was so powerful.  She's the light side of the force's balance to Kylo as his grew in strength.  Snoke says as much when she confronts him saying "The darkness rises and the light to meet it".  Snoke assumed that the light would empower Luke, but it chose Rey instead.

Hidden Text:

You're right. I'm just not sure I buy it.

My issue is her relative strength compared to previous Jedi.

Look at what Rey does untrained. In Force Awakens - she uses the jedi mind trick successfully on a guard. She successfully resists kylos mind probe and indeed reads his fears. She defeats Kylo in a duel.

I'd let the defeat go cos he was probably concentrating using the force to keep himself alive after Chewie's crossbow hit - but no one has done stuff like the Jedi Mind Tick and resisting a mind read untrained before. It's basically almost the level of strength luke has in Jedi after completing his training. She's doing it untrained.

If it's because Kylo is so strong, does this mean he's stronger than Vader seeing as she appears to be proportionally stronger than luke?

Basically I was going to let it go if it turns out she's a skywalker or a kynobi or someting. But if she's a junk trader from nowhere its odd that she's the most powerful jedi ever, even than the 'chosen one' anakin and even than his blood relatives.

Oh sorry just saw my post was redundant!

I saw it for the 3rd time today.

Really enjoyed it I must say. I understand people's issues with the plot but I kinda love it anyway.

I do hope they

explain why she's so powerful in the next one though. Although everyone being related to everyone is kinda lame when its over 3 generations - it's better than a girl being superpowered just cos she's a girl

I'm surprised all the 'Luke Died' talk??  When did he die? I'm not the best at watching movies & attention span, but I recall he was facing the At Ats, then Darth Emo faced him and fought him. He killed him off but it all seemed to be a mirage, as the very next scene they show Luke meditating it all thru. He was projecting himself there, into that battle, but he wasn't actually there. That's what The Force was. imho at least.

Yes but then...

Hidden Text:

After the battle we see you're right about the projction - he's still on the island meditating on the rock where he was training rey. After he projected him self he collapses gasping from the effort. We see him sit up. He then gets a tranquil peaceful look as he watches the twin sunset (a nice callback to the early look shots of boy-luke looking at the setting suns in A New Hope. We then see him disappear. Similar to the way obiwan does when struck down, and basically the same as the way yoda did. Like just kinda fade and not be sitting there anymore. We also see his robe blow away into the air.

It then cuts to leia doing one of her "I'm feeling something in the force" faces, and rey kinda pauses for a moment. Later right near the very end they say something about how they felt him pass (forget the exact phrase she used) and they were like "it wasn't upset or painful, more like he found purpose and fullfillment" or some line to that effect. So yeah you could look at it like he worked himself to death with the force, but I think it's kinda that he became one with the force as it was his time having saved ray from Kylo.

Torn on it. I guess this trillogy has to be about the new characters. And I don't mind them writing him out generally. But it was sort of a bit antilclimatic after his big trick on Kylo that he ended up dying anyway.

This isn't a personal attack on you buzz, but this type of individualistic thinking is the reason our society is starting to fail, it's an absolute sickness in our culture.

I agree with a lot of your post.

For me I wasn't trying to over analyse it generally, but it was just kinda weird in that

the first movie sort of set up a few things that were mysteries that it seemed would be explained in the future instalments. Then this movie actively undid them. Which I found kinda weird.

But I really enjoyed the movie anyway I must say.

Mid way through I started kinda thinking how its a bit like the sort of games one would play with starwars toys as a kid, then I realised the same thing - it's surely possible to over think things and let your expectations make you not enjoy something lighthearted.

That said - I hope JJ ties up the loose ends in Episode 9. I'll find it fun anyway probably, but it deserves a strong finish.
