I know it's a little late 'n all, but I'm gonna write down a more detailed review of the song, as I see it.
Good post...i don't agree with it all...but I like the detail you've gone into.
The intro (if you ignore the ridiculous distorted chord bashing the first two seconds) is amazing, signature buckethead. My only gripe with it might be that's it's very reminiscent in style of a lot of Bucket's stuff, but that's not really relevant to the general public anyway.
Yeah...the chord bashing thing is interesting...like on one hand its classic buckety and kinda gives the song a distinctive sound...then again I can see that kind of thing alienating a lot of casual listeners.
I love the drumming in the pre-chorus, the "don't ever try to tell me" - awesome.....
The chorus itself is not good at all. It's bland, uninspired, messy and noisy.
This is where we disagree...the chorus is my favourite part of the song. It brings everything together and its so damn catchy!
I feel that this song is similar to OMG in the industrial vibe, but this one succeeds where OMG struggles to maintain a melody that's catchy to a casual listener - as there are just too many forces pulling in different directions on that track - even though its cool....this one is chaos but with some kind of underlying logic to it....
I agree that the solo lacks melody....which is why I think the chorus is all the more important here.
Sadly, this obviously isn't true. Bucket (a major driving factor behind this song) is gone, and we've heard a bunch of other (in my opinion lesser) songs before this one.
I dunno...I think Axl working with bucket gives him the chance at some structure and might make his music more approachable. Don't get me wrong - bucket has formidable skills on the guitar - but I've got to admit - I find that creatively - in his own random way he's actually quite repedative...all his songs seem to have jumps and tempo/style changes..mid song....they are like show reals of really cool stuff you can do on guitar...but its like watching a movie of trailers - they lack the ch-herance of a proper song structure. I think thats what people like TWAT - its bucket playing in a trraditional rock context...hopefulyl there's more of that kind of thing on the album. Although it seems his use has been limited in most of the track's we've heard to the occasional tapping burst.
I dont want to build hype. But we don't actually know what Rockers exist. Prior to this year no one knew about SR...there could be many other hidden gems...Baz has heard 3 full CDs of Axl stuff...we only have what like 3/4 of 1 disc....

Great Post Sic.
Yeah...i've always assumed some of the UYI stuff was left for dead because it was so slash heavy...songs like estranged and coma.
Its true about the band lighting up doing TAY - I think part of that was from the audience though - as it was like hearing a new song because it wasn't something we were used to hearing live prior to the new lineups....

^ Thanks. That makes a lot of sence
I never noticed how the live mix was basicly the same thing he said they'd done to the album....interesting!

I would add:
You Could Be Mine - I think this is one of the greatest rock tracks ever recorded
You're Crazy (accoustic) - Axl's best peformance IMHO

So in Chinese democracy Robin plays a solo from 3.07 to 3.22 and the Bucket tags in and plays from 3.22 to 3.37.
Is the consensus that the SR solo is also in 2 parts like this? As in 2.16-2.31 is one guitarist and then 2.31-2.45 is another? If so - is it bucket and BBF? And does this mean one of those breaks was originally Robin and has been redone?

^ Nah i think the rerecording is more disrespectful...because its more enduring...a tour is only seen by those people who go...re-releasing a classic album messes with future generations who are exposed to the new one first...long after the band is too old to tour...its messing with history.
I wonder what 2 AFD songs they ditched for YCBM and Patience?

I think a middle line is the way of things.
It's wrong for fans to think we are owed an album. At the same time - its natural for a fan of music to want to seek out new music by their favourite artitsts.
And i'd expect that if Axl found out about 'lost' records by Nazereth or Queen or whomever he loves...that he'd have some excitment at the prospect of hearing it one day.
Likewise its natural for us to be keen, and while we may not be owed it, the GNR camp has for years on end made refrences to the album - which has kept the fires of hope and desire alive. I mean if they gave out a statement in 1999 that Axl was retiring from music and public life no one would be waiting - but thats not what we get - we've had years of snippits about recording, guest players, song titles...there is logical reason for fans to be excited for the album.
As for evertthing else, I try and let the music do my talking for me. Sure there's politics - theres band memebers dismissals and quitting, there's been riots, arrests, some stuff i agreed with , some stuff I don't - but at the end of the day - I think what i get out of classic GNR and the new GNR music axl has given us maskes up for all that shit - so i'll continue to go to tours and buy the merchandise.
Sure in an ideal world it would be easier to be a fan, and the GNR camp would connect with and dig us fans, but many of these unsual perspectives axl has are probably also what helped him become the artist he is today and write the music he does. So I'll take the good with the bad. If he hates us...we'll that sucks...but hopefully he'll still release an album I love even if he hates me!

That's a good point james. I never thouight of that cos I've been a fan since the start basicly...but yeah imagine that....must be a headtrip for those people.
To Captain Winkler - to me its natutral for people to associate Slash with GNR - while I'm the first to admit the fact that he's been gone 10+ years - it's also the primary thing that made him famous (although he has boosted that with guest appearances etc for years) and further - his playing is a big part of what elevated a number of songs - such as November Rain and SCOM to the "classic" status they today enjoy. Likewise - as James as said - a young fan with no exposure to GNR could be forgiven for not understanding the history - i mean its slash on the albums you buy - half the time he's still used in promo in one way or another - and in the absence of CD - there's nothing to replace him - unless you catch a live show.
Where we do agree is on the small minded nature of the discussion about the leaks on youtube and so forth. Like I think slash is a god...and there's some songs I'd have been interested to hear his take on (likewise I often hear a song and think - hey I wish Axl would sing this - for example "Love Hurts" by Nazereth - would rule with Axl!) - but simpily loving slash is NOT a reason for people to AUTOMATICLY bag out the newer GNR - which many do as you say - like saying eveything without slash sucks automaticly just because he is not there, or making fun of Axl's clothes or hair or whatever....but that's one thing thats good about this community is that we're pretty free of that kind of bullshit.
the people here who dislike the leaks tend to have thought out reasoned views on why they don't like the songs - and that's cool. Likewise the people who love them can tell you precisely why they love them - and don't just love them cos the author has the initial of W.A.Rose....so it makes for good discussion this place.
Myself I'm an annoying "in the middle" person. I love slash and I love the old GNR records. However I've been blown away by the leaks and love them dearly. When seeing the band live - I miss Slash on the old songs - but not at all when the band plays a new songs. I hate how robin plays AFD, but think he sounds fucking fantastic on some of the leaks. So i'm not easily classified!

Not to mention I'd be pissed that we got ripped off with some cover tracks as the bonus rather than new material/unheard demos.
Its kinda OT...but i'm interested to know if there's going to be any true covers (as opposed to AFD covers lol) on the album. I like the cover tracks on TSI and UYI...so i'd like to see Axl's take on a few new songs...like a studio version of "Sailing" would be awesome.
