#871 The Garden » The Right to Bear Arms » 927 weeks ago

Just read a thread in the garden that got me thinking on this issue.  What do you all think of the constitutional right to bear arms?  There are a lot of crazies walking around out there who feel the need to pop people off whenever they feel like it.  Every so often you hear of a sniper or someone walking into a crowded public place and just popping people off.  Around here, guns are usually just used for hunting (I'm from a small rural area, I know).  But it's very rare for someone with a firearm to just walk in somewhere and shoot the place up.  I think part of it has to do with the perception of spotting an individual holding a gun.  Just this past week, a guy on our campus brought a pellet gun to school for a presentation where he reenacted a Monty Python skit.  Anyway, the guy had permission to bring it and everything, but as soon as he was spotted, he was reported to the police and arrested.  Just because he brought it into a public location.  Do you guys down south react the same way, or when you see someone with a gun in public do you just turn the other way as it's a constitutional right for the person to have one?  I know the right comes with limitations, but I'm unsure of the boundaries.

People argue that they need guns for protection.  From who?  Other people with guns?  Newsflash: if guns weren't as easily accessible, these crazies with guns wouldn't have them to begin with.  Then what do you need the gun for?  Of course, society has been conditioned that guns are necessary for protection and nowadays it holds true; guns are pretty much necessary in a society that harbours guns.  If not, you're left defenseless against those who do.  But what if guns weren't around in the first place?  The old adage goes "Guns don't kill people, people kill people."  This is true.  But don't you think a gun makes killing a lot easier?  A gun allows a person to end another's life without physical contact.  Hell, you don't even have to look at the person.  Moreover, it's a lot more difficult for someone to go on a murderous rampage using a knife or anything else instead of a gun.  Using a gun, one shot, that's it.  You don't even have to see blood.

I think that people are interpreting the constitution way too literally and that they feel an obligation to carry a gun.  What more, guns have been made pretty much a necessity as they are easily accessible to the wrong people.  Is there any way to change that now?  Maybe not.  But I'm all up for suggestions if it means saving lives of innocent random people.

Any thoughts?

There really needs to be some sort of gun control in place to ensure that loonies like this guy don't have access to them to do crazy shit like this.  I mean, how does someone get a rifle into a mall in the first place?  It's not like it can be easily concealed.  He must have just walked on in with the rifle on his side and no one took notice until he started firing.  That is entirely crazy.

If that dude on the far right wasn't wearing a speedo and didn't have a nipple exposed, I'd swear it was a chick.  I mean, check out that cleavage.

While it may not be the best available option, I think these guys will stick together for another year or two.  Their fanbase is dwindling and I think they're pretty much oblivious to it.  After everything that happened last year (Axl's statement about Slash, Scott vs. Axl, all the rehab rumours, and Scott and Mary having a big spat) all signs were pointing at a break up.  These guys stuck together, while it was clearly not for the best (market-wise), and I think they'll continue to stick together for another couple of years until no one cares anymore.  I just think they're oblivious to the fact that the general public isn't concerned with them.  Or maybe they just don't care.  I like them and that's all that matters to me.  If they stick together, I'll be happy with another release.  If not, I look forward to what the future brings from each of them (except maybe Matt and Dave).

Movie: Gone Baby Gone.  Yeah, in a year with Superbad and Shrek 3, I went with the tearjerker.  Of course, I haven't seen American Gangster yet, so that might change.

Music: I haven't really gotten much new music this year.  Goodbye Blue Monday by Jeremy Fisher, come to think of it.  I got to see him live this year, playing all the new stuff, which was great.  Everyone should check this guy out.  He's like a semi-upbeat Dylan, only obviously not as good.

Sports: My highlight was sort of Bittersweet.  Sitting in Don Cherry's Sports Grill watching the Canadiens vs. Maple Leafs on the last day of the season.  Montreal doped up and gave up a big lead, while Michael Ryder scored a hat trick.  I was surrounded by Leafs fans so it was a hard pill to swallow, especially since it knocked Montreal out of a playoff position and temporarily put the Leafs in 8th place.  That all changed the next day when the Islanders won a game in a shootout... backstopped by Wade Dubliewicz (who? Exactly).  Leaf nation was crushed that they were out of the playoffs too.  I laughed about it for weeks!

Personal: Highlight for this year was going to Fort McMurray on a work term in the oil sands for 4 months.  Met some awesome people and got a real job (in Calgary) when I'm done school.  Pretty sweet!

#876 Re: The Sunset Strip » Another Reason Garth Brooks is the Man » 928 weeks ago

I think I'm the only person in history who thought the Chris Gaines album was decent.  It failed miserably, but I agree with russ in that no one really understands it.  It was supposed to be a prelude to a movie about a reclusive rock star who overcame tragedy after tragedy and continued to build on his success.  The entire project was bloated and self-indulgent, but Brooks could've pulled it off.

I like a few of the man's songs, but he certainly isn't my favourite artist.  I'm not sure about calling him pop country, because he's still more country than Shania Twain (the love of my life, of course), Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, and the rest of the likes of them ever will be.  Sure he's not up there with the greats like Cash and Williams, but he's great in his own right.  He's sold more records than Elvis and anyone else all time (except for the Beatles).  That's a pretty big accomplishment right there.  He threw a concert that attracted almost 1 million people.  GNR new or old couldn't do that.  He's a legend in his own right.

I don't think it's over.  These guys will probably stick together and carry on this current disaster.  I've been a big VR supporter, but I can see that these guys are doomed.  At the same time, I think they're blind to it and will do another album and maybe release a DVD before they split for good.  After that, Weiland will likely end up back with STP and a GNR reunion will probably happen.  Other than that, I don't see Slash, Duff, and Matt trying to get a new singer or anything like that.  They'll just go their separate ways, realizing they're not the biggest band in the world.

With that being said, I'd like to see a new Snakepit or Blues Ball tour with a new album from Slash.

Nice.

Seriously though, Adler sounds like a fucked up dude.  He needs help but he doesn't want to help himself.  That's the problem.

#879 Re: Guns N' Roses » Rolling Stone (50 Best Songs Over 7 Minutes Long) » 928 weeks ago

Rolling Stone is ridiculous.  It named Stairway to Heaven #31 on its greatest songs of all time list, but then exclude it from the top 50 over 7 minutes.  And realistically, November Rain had far more success than Estranged ever did.  This list makes no sense whatsoever.  There are probably 2 dozen songs I'd put up there before a lot of them.

I'd go just to see Cinderella.  If Skid Row reunited, it would be a bonus.
