"...I gotta go help DJ paint his toe nails for the show..."
Loved that! Very funny!

I haven't had a chance to do that with this album since the lyrics weren't included. That could be a reason some of these songs just aren't sticking with me. I can't really sing along to many of them. Lyrics could certainly change that, or at least help.
That's a good point, I hadn't thought about it but it's definitely something I do - listen to the songs now and then and read along with the lyrics. As you say it helps commit them to memory and also can ensure the song sticks in your head.
i think that reading while listening takes aways from actually hearing the music cuz you are concentrating on reading too much
so does everyon;s disk say "watch this" ... not "watch this dave" like mine does?
Mine says "Watch This Dave"

are we the only two that noticed that? I have been saying this for years. that original drum beat was killer and the final version of cd would have been even more killer with the original drums.
Well, don't know about you but I play drums on a very "amateur-I-think-I'm-a-badass-drummer-when-playing-along-to-gnr-on-my-headphones" kinda level.... And I notice simple little unimportant stuff like that!

Totally off topic:
Three of my friends asked me months ago if I wanted to go with them to Costa Rica (they're surfers...). I said no. They are there now. Wish I would've gone with them. I would easily ditch them to go see the upcoming GNR-gig! (They're not fans...)
On topic:
How long has it been since they didn't close with Paradise City...?

Since the situation is that we got the demos and the finished CD, us hardcore fans will allways have different opinions/taste as to what should have been deleted or not...
Even though I like the finnished CD over the demos. There are two things that comes to mind that I liked about the demos:
- The dobbel snaredrum hit on the verses on ChiDem
- The slightly altered lyrics on one (or more) chorus on Better

Reading this thread reminds me of something Lars Ullrich said in the "Some Kind Of Monster"-documentary, the bit where he talks about his passion for art/paintings. Went something like: "When is a piece of art done? Why didn't the artist put more black up in this corner? When is a song done?"
It's one of the downfalls of modern digital recording and distrubution of music. If you're a hardcore fan, you sometimes have access to early demos of songs. And with todays fancy recording equipment, even a demo will sound really fucking great!
In GNR's case, they got new members into the band before the album was out and/or done. For me it's understandble that they would want to see what these members could bring to this and that song.
At the end of the day, it is their/Axl's art and it's not done until they feel it's done. If that means that Ron replaces Brian May on Catcher OR they really need a few more weeks to add Bach's harmony vocals on Sorry because Axl heard him sing it while taking a shit (or whatever it was...) OR they ad the "liquid-drops"-effect in Prostitute OR any other background noise you can only hear with a good soundsystem etc etc, so be it...
Axl: "The art comes first"

People say the new versions are busy, but to me the old versions are flat and missing that X factor.
Totally agree!!
I recently listened to the demos for the first time in ages, thought I had lost them. They now seem flat and missing the extra punch and weight.
I recently bought myself new headphones (Bose QuiteComfort15) and holy shit does CD sound great with good equipment!!
There was a time when I wanted GNR to make a comeback that would put them on top of the charts and back to being the biggest most popular band in the world.
Axl seem to be not very interested in plugging his art in printmedia/TV.
Still, without much promotion and press, they play huge shows all over the world, with the attending fans knowing exactly who's gonna be on that stage and who's long gone.
I'm happy to have gotten CD and the possibility of going to a show pretty soon. If they release any new music in the coming years, that would be great! If not.... well most of us are adults with shit to do and there's plenty of music in the world....
The band seems happy and so does the fans!

A review from one of the biggest newspapers in Norway:
http://www.dagbladet.no/2010/04/05/kult … /11141294/
You can all google-translate if you're very interested.
If not, here's a few translated points from the review:
- (Headline): Where did all the cool riffs go?
- ...it's odd, that on what he calls his first soloalbum, he is not very present at all...
- the Ozzy- and Astbury-songs are the best on the album
- Slash's collaboration with punkrebel Iggy Pop are a "drunkinwedding" made in heaven
- Grandpa Lemmy's contribution passes the test...
- By The Sword is a good amotive retro-Zeppelin-ish song
- Adam Levin and Myles Kennedy are OK, but mostly wierd and interesting contributions...
- Everything else is mostly guests who are better off in their respective camps
- The riffguitarist who introduced WTTJ, SCOM and It's So easy into every houshold, is unfourtunatly hard to notice on this album...
Score: 3 out of 6
And from the biggest newspaper in Norway:
http://www.vg.no/musikk/artikkel.php?artid=595256
Also score: 3 out of 6
So avarage reception from the the two biggest newspapers in norway.
I've not listened to the whole album. Will buy it today....
