I'm going to make the jump soon or i was until i just got pissed off about it. My story is this:
I use front projection - and my projector is about to die - so its time to get a new one - and makes sence to get a 1080p projector cos they just came down in price. So hense - time to get some 1080p signals to put into it...plus I might be able to get it cheaper if i package it with a blu-ray.
But here's what's shat me off.....
It seems that the new HD sound formats for blu-ray are all only sent via HDMI (ie DTS MA etc), now the new projecor has HDMI no probs...but my audio receiver doesn't cos I currently use an optical connection which was supported on the older formats like DTS-ES. So this means i'm also going to have to buy a new receiver as well...and that's going to get obsene...i just can't justify buying a new projector, HD player, and receiver at the same time. All i want is a damn optical link as well as hdmi. Worse still...it seems NONE of the Blu-ray players in australia decode all the formats...they all do some but not others...how gay is that!!
So maybe i'll just get a projector and upscale some other way and sit it out until someone makes a player that, you know, actually plays the format.

^ Does that mean I should not buy a Blu Ray player just yet? Like will it change?

Anyone who isn't believing what Randall is saying should really read the book I mentioned earlier.
Its called "The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists" - by Neil Strauss.
it is NOT a how-to-do-it guide - its Neil's autobiography in the pickup community.
Basicly he was a nerd author who stumbled into some of this stuff by accident and then studied their techniques and became a guru himself.
It was given to me as a gift, and when i read the back of the book i thought "what i load of bullshit" but decided to read it anyway as it sounded funny (and it mentioned he bumps into various celebraties and i was interested to see how it all developed). But since reading his book, its clear to me that this stuff is out there and real and exists, and it would appear works.
While I agree with Jessica that it may not help you live together for years..it will give a guy a chance to show a women he is a good guy when that woman may not normally give him time of day.
It sounds crazy but its really not. Men are turned on by certain things, and so are women. Its just pushing those buttons.
Do you disagree that 90% of men would be turned on if a woman walked into the room, walked up to him and began to undress? No because men are pre-programed to be attracted visually to females. Most men anwyay. Likewise there are things (mostly mental and behaviours) that will attract 90% of women and gain their initial interest.

Well someone whos more of a techie than me will be able to explain better...
Its about lines of pixels to make resolution. A 1080 televison can display 1080 lines of data. A Blu Ray disc has this much data to display naturally. A Dvd does not...they only have 480 lines (or whatever the exact number is it is...i've forgotten).
If you have a screen of 1080 lines and you only use 480 of them it looks shit cos there are lots of gaps.
However there is a technology called "upscaling" or "upconverting" (not to be confused with upskirting
that basicly gets the 480 lines and makes them fit to 1080 by simulating what would be in those missing lines using processors.
You can either buy seperate hardware for this - like video processors . Or I'd expect most blu-ray players to have this technology built into them...but i havnt studied it yet.
Anyway a dvd played on an upconverting system will look better than a conventional dvd, but less good than something that was 1080 in the first place without the need for processing. (ie Blu Ray)

Facinating...i just finished reading the book "The Game" by Style or whatever his name is in the seduction community detailing his real life story with the community.
I was blown away as i had no idea this stuff existed.
I should make it my 2008 resolution to get into this stuff, as i've spent too many years alone, but I doubt i've got the balls for it to be honest!

I thought it was funny...I like how gates starts backing off when he starts ripping at the end

I think its more a cultural thing.
While i agree "It don't really matter" or "it do not really matter" is bad grammer....that kind of incorrect usage is quite common in English in some communities.
To me its much like how many people say "I could care less", when what they really mean is "I couldn't care less", its just one of those things

Cool. I'd never quite been able to work out what that line about "Hell" was before thanks

Laserdisc was the shit "back in the day". I hated all you bastards who were getting this cool format when I watching shit-quality vhs's!!
Yeah me too. I never owned a laserdisc player cos they were pricey here. Some friends of my parents got one in the end...but they mostly had opera stuff and so that didn't have the appeal.
The day i realised I was a huge nerd was seeing Aliens on laserdisc and CRT projector set-up one day....I knew I had to have those toys
Its kinda like the first time you see the opposite sex nude...and suddenly you know why your alive
LMAO

I'm still waiting for LaserDisc to make a comeback.
All 420 lines of resolution huh?
Although I'll grant you it didnt get the compression artifact issues we get these days.
