Right now Blu-Ray is winning the war. Blockbuster isn't even carrying HD-Dvd any longer. As far as video quality they are both excellent and it would be hard to say which is better athough (strictly an opinion here) I think the blu-rays can produce a bit more "depth" in the picture quality. From a technical standpoint the Blu- Ray is superior as it can hold 15x the info that a HD-DVD can. That doesn't mean that it will come out the victor. Betamax was superior to the VHS yet VHS won. MD was superior to the CD, CD won.
Its interesting here in Australia. There's not a lot of places around to buy either product yet, but JB Hi-Fi (which is one of the major record stores around) had made a decision to only stock BD titles...so they said...until i noticed last month they now also have HD-DVD.
BD ought to win cos of its superiority...but then as you say history doesn't always show that is the case. And things are different now I guess...like the porn industry's vote is less important now people get their porn online so much.
I'm actually afraid both of these formats will get lost due to consumer "who cares" factor. I mean i care cos i'm a home theatre nerd. But I dont think most people around here will. Like there were reasons to upgrade to DVD from VHS - way better picture on any TV, mono/stereo sound vs 5.1, does not degrade when used, easy to chapter skip, special features on discs, subtitles.
Lots of clear reasons to justify an upgrade. But to these new formats its stuff like "uncompressed sound" and "1080p" which is cool to me but not to Sally Shopper on the Street. So i'm a bit worried that people will either ignore the change. Or go with dvd-hd just cos its sounds closer to what they know and like already. Sounds silly i know, but the ignorance is heavy here, I used to work in a TV store...and trying to explain to people that 1080 is different to 720 yet they can both legally be called HD here...was a battle.
Anyways...i was waiting, but i'm looking at getting a 1080 display very soon, so will prob jump in soon, I'm going to go with BD just cos the specs are that much cooler, and I hope it wins!

You honestly believe that downloading is the sole reason music industry is collapsing?
Hmm..well yeah to be honest. If we didn't have technology that allowed us to make good quality copies of music for free, then people would go buy more CDs. There wasn't any collapse in the 80s or esrly 90s. All of this began basicly when it became cheap to get CDRs/Internet/mp3.
I don't deny that there are reasons the industry sucks, and that many people are enjoying the chance to "stick it to the man", and I know everiyone always says "they only have themselves to blame". But that's why consumers hate them, not how we are able to rip them off. Consumers all hate oil companies too, but they're making a lot cos we havn't worked out how to swap petrol for free 
So yeah, i guess, I do think if it wasn't for the technological upgrades that we've had, then the the profit results of the music businesses would be at hisorical or better levels. And its money that makes our society go round. So at the end of the day - it all comes back to downloading/burning.

I know i'm alone in this, but I see it as the consumers biting the hand that feeds them.
Downloading is causing the music industry to colapse. Soon when higher speed transfers are standard the same downloading will destroy the movie industry (more than it already is).
Then we'll have no good quality films and music recordings to listen to - you'll have to look for a good movie amongst everyone else with a handycam on youtube. And you'll have to search through the crap music of anyone with a band to find bands that have some talent.
While i agree that too much business has got into the music business (manafactured talent that looks cute but can't play etc) - there does need to be some mechnism to promote and sort out what's truely exceptional from what's not.

Soon there's going to be no way to get stuff we want in decent quality.
Its happening a lot already...i wanted an album the other day, and none of the record stores near me had it...so now i'm looking at having to get it at itunes in low grade quality. Pisses me off.

Depends on the circumstances...some familys arn't close and people only come and go every few years...they may not have realised he was missing until recently.

HE does have some point with this though, the leaks show the material is worthy of release, and even if Axl can do even better, who ever said he could only make 1 album to prove his worth? Hell - if he really wanted to prove he was the soul of GNR he'd have to at least make a few albums.

That was a very controversial video at the time. Thats probably why you cant find it anywhere. Youtube probably deletes it when it gets uploaded.
I remember that video...and doesn't it turn out that the POV is also a chick at the end ?
