London, England () -- Singer Justin Bieber kept thousands of fans and their tired, outraged parents up way past their bedtime Monday after arriving on stage nearly two hours late for a sold out show at London's O2 Arena.

Bieber was greeted by choruses of boos from the sell-out crowd amid scenes of tearful devastation as scores of sobbing school-aged "Beliebers" were hauled away minutes into the singer's set by parents desperate to catch last trains home on a school night.

Sleep-deprived fans and their parents, many of whom shelled out more than $150 a ticket for the gig, lent new meaning to the term "Bieber fever" as they blasted the 19-year-old Canadian pop idol in Twitter tantrums as "lame" and "disgusting" following last night's debacle.

Impatient fans waiting for the so-called "Prince of Pop" were further enraged by the apparent constant repetition of the King of Pop's greatest hits ahead of Bieber's set.

But for many fans all was forgiven when, in typically understated fashion, the singer finally fluttered onto the stage attached to a huge set of wings before eventually taking his top off to the delight of throngs of screaming Beliebers.

Maybe it was all the screaming and crying, or maybe it was that he didn't make it on stage until about a half hour before he was supposed to finish, but there were more than a few fans with Bieber hangovers today -- although for a lucky handful with cool parents, it did have its side benefits.

Bieber took to Twitter and his 35 million-plus followers to apologize, calling last night's delay inexcusable, and pledged to be on time for his next London gig on Tuesday.

yea this is getting a load of coverage over here
the press are having a field day giving him a bit of a kicking.
so it goes.
he deserves it too. (as does axl for that matter) (beibers a bigger fish & is getting far more attn, obv).

however, my current favourite pop-star being cunty story actually belongs to pete townshend who told a 9yr old girl & her father to fuck off at a who concert.

which admittedly is less horrible that what he used to do to 9yr olds but still.. props for being a massive twat again pete.

LOL...did he give any reason for his delay?

I can imagine realistically if you tour for years every so often there's going to be a one-off incident where you're sick or something else fucks up....the test will be if it starts happening all the time like with GNR....

Maybe he needed a shower wink

Nah, he was waiting for his roast lamb dinner, and the game was on.

Justin Bieber may have shocked parents by arriving late on stage – not the reported two hours, in fact, but a little under an hour after his pre-determined stagetime of 9.30pm – but he barely registers on the all-time lateness chart.

Still No 1 in that list is Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses, who has made it his life's work never to show up at the appointed time and place. When Guns N' Roses played at the O2 arena last summer, the venue warned fans the stagetime was "TBC" and its venue offered fans tips on getting home after hours – a good job, given the show went on till 2am.

At least everyone knows what to expect, with Rose regularly leading his musicians on stage up to two hours late. Rose's justification: "This is Guns N' Roses and when the time is right the stage will ignite." That's when they turn up at all: on their "Chinese Democracy" tour, which somehow ran for 10 years from 2001 to 2011, they cancelled 53 shows, playing 239.

Hip-hop stars have been getting more punctual in recent years, after the genre won a reputation for stars taking little interest in timekeeping, but there are some rappers who live down to expectations, such as Snoop Dogg – five hours late on stage at the Hove festival in Norway last summer, owing to his decision to try to carry marijuana through Norwegian customs, with wholly predictable consequences.

And the assorted members of Wu-Tang Clan, whether together or apart, seem to regard it as a badge of honour to keep fans waiting – the Guardian's reviewer noted that GZA's decision to delay his appearance by an hour in Sheffield last year led to fists flying in the audience.

It's not always the usual suspects. My own worst experience came with the mild-mannered Magic Numbers, playing a low-key warm-up show in 2006. They were due to start playing at 8pm, but that hour came and went, as did 9pm, 10pm and 11pm. They finally took to the stage at 11.30pm – I saw one and a half songs before getting back home to relieve the babysitter.

I'd be willing to bet Jerry was the cause of this incident.
