I didn't realize you needed to be an elected official for the award.

If he didn't win it based on ten days in office, why did he win it?

Tell me one thing that occurred in that time frame. Hell, tell me one thing he's done in the past 20 years that would somehow be worthy of any acknowledgement whatsoever. You couldn't list anything during the election cycle, and I doubt you can do it now because you know as well as I do that this guy hasn't done jack shit.

He's the most unqualified person on the global stage in world history. You deserve kudos for praising that though.

You people are barking at the wrong tree. It's the PEACE PRIZE.  Has nothing to do with his Presidency or qualifications!

No, you are. I didn't realize a bunch of dipshits cheering for something yet couldn't name one thing he supported is accomplishing something. Have our standards REALLY dropped that low? Someone cheers for you so you get awards? Why hasn't Hulk Hogan won multiple Peace Prizes? If that is the defense of Obama mania, then even his nutswingers know he's done nothing.

t's the PEACE PRIZE.  Has nothing to do with his Presidency or qualifications!

Once again.....

WHAT HAS HE DONE?? You narrowing down his reasons for getting the award doesn't make his case. You're narrowing down a big pile of nothing into a smaller pile of nothing.

So show us the nothing instead of pics of people loving him who couldn't name one issue he supports with a gun pointed to their heads.

What standards?? For the Peace Prize?  I'm sorry, can anybody here name the qualifications or criteria in order to win?  It's like a bunch of Americans trying to argue over futbol/soccer in the Olympics when we don't even know the rules.

Whats funny is Obama supporters unable to name ONE thing he's done in his life so it becomes a sidestepping of the issue by trying to make people write a thesis on previous winners.

You yourself know he doesn't deserve this.

Ronald Reagan never won, and we both know Obama couldn't hold his jock strap even in his own pipe dreams.

Reagan actually did things worthy of such a prize. So did Clinton. Fuck, you could even make a case for Daddy Bush since he built that global coalition to remove Saddam from Kuwait.

"for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

Name me ONE thing. Just ONE. A Nobel candidate should have several, yet no one can name one for this guy.

He's so qualified. 14

While you'd have to ask the pioneer of this theory, Ronald Reagan, for the complete answer, I think anyone can see that people will NOT support the cutting of government programs. Everyone rallies behind reduced spending but no one wants to make any cuts. This is a Representative Democracy - the people rule.

No, we're a Republic.  Democracy is overrated anyway, the average person is quite stupid and it leads to socialism  (which is where we're headed).

A representational democracy (what I said ) IS a Republic. But thanks for the attempted lesson in civics.

And also, to whoever said it's funny to hear Dems complaining about Congress when Congress is a super majority of Dems - I'm not a democrat. I'm a libertarian most of the time. But I find the idea of social legislation to be the most abhorrent thing in the world, so I tend to favor that over the economic and militaristic ideals of small government, since no major party combines all 3 platforms.

yawn... this thread blows. I stated numerous times & not doing it again. Did I say he's a great selection?? Or the most qualified?  Never. But since people keep thinking it's only about his first 3 weeks as President it's obviously sour grapes. Also, please name who should have won the award? Thanks.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.

For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."

full text of the award citation..basically saying that he won it because he brings hope to the free world...i dunno when i think of the nobel peace prize i think of someone who has worked years to better human kind...unless i'm missing something i dont know what he has done to deserve the prize....being a swell guy shouldnt count....neither should well wishing elses most of us would get the same award ya know?

"the nobel peace prize goes to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

notice "shall have done" .... not "hopes to do one day" i get where you're coming from PaSnow but hopes and dreams don't equal actions, thats all i'm sayin

All you did was post pictures of people cheering.

I've seen this same thread on a few other sites I go to, and yes they all blow. Not one person can say why he should have won.

Obama swinger: YAY!!! He won!!! He deserves it!!!!1111

Rational thinker: What did he do to warrant such an honor?

Obama swinger: *crickets chirp*

Also, please name who should have won the award?

Russian President Medvedev and/or the European Union for negotiating a peace plan in the Russia-Georgia conflict. That was literally a potential flash point for World War III, and occurred just as the world economic disaster was unfolding.

I know, that's not good enough. People standing up for what they believe in and taking the initiative isn't worthy of praise. Pipe dreams are more worthy.

Who should be up for the award next year....

Bill Clinton- for playing a huge diplomatic role(Obama didn't do shit) in the release of the two american hostages in North Korea.

Russian president Medvedev- for starting a more democratic leadership in Chechnya which led to a cease fire in the region. First time in almost 20 years that region hasn't been bathed in blood.

Those people actually did something. Maybe Obama will win it again, since people cheer for him. Fuck people who take action and do things. Change!!!111

....basically saying that he won it because he brings hope to the free world...i dunno when i think of the nobel peace prize i think of someone who has worked years to better human kind...unless i'm missing something

You're not missing anything. That's exactly what it used to be for. Until now. Now you get to win it after having a miniscule, mediocre Senate term and 10 days into a presidency.

Let me guess, he won it for his ceremonial position at Harvard Law? 14

I think its fucking hilarious that leaders like Roosevelt, Reagan, Churchill, Gandhi, etc. aren't worthy of such an award, but this guy is.

i dont know what he has done to deserve the prize....being a swell guy shouldnt count....neither should well wishing elses most of us would get the same award ya know?

He hasn't done anything to deserve it, which is why his own supporters cant even think of ONE reason to give it to him.

Why didn't Bobby McFerrin win in 1988? He told the world to "Don't Worry, Be Happy".

They should've given it to PM Stephen Harper for learning to play Beatles tunes on the piano.  It makes just as much sense.

Seriously... what has Obama done for peace?  Attempt to close Guantanamo Bay (don't even get me started)?  Try to develop an exit strategy for Iraq (we'll see...)?  If someone says it's because he's the first black president, that's silly.  It's not like he overcame adversity to do it, he was simply the better candidate.

"Strengthening international diplomacy"?  What does that even mean?  All politicians do that... at least the diplomatic ones do.  That seriously looks more like a criticism of Bush than a strength of Obama.  "Cooperation between peoples?"  Should we give the award to all facilitators, mediators, and arbitrators?  Judges contribute much more in this category than politicians ever could.  Just saying.

For the record, Roosevelt won it in 1906.
