I would've chose it over The General if they had taken a fan poll before deciding.
Because of the lyrical focus of “Oklahoma”? For me that is the strongest attraction for the song: To understand where his head was at when literally everything — his band and relationship — were in crisis.
What did he decide about his own identity and autonomy?
What did he decide about the risk and reward of trusting others?
This song could basically be an important chapter of his autobiography.
The potential for the lyrics is sky high...but it's the instrumental that really sells it for me.
It sounds like Soundgarden and A Flock of Seagulls jammed out a song.
I doubt it can get much better than that.
The guitarist of Flock of Seagulls did some wild, inventive stuff that never made it to the radio:

He needs to swap lines with Duff on the choruses. Let Duff take the “You’re all alone” lines. The current arrangement leaves him struggling for breath.

The minute I heard it I thought Beatles. Actually described it to someone that way today. I think it’s sneaky powerful and Axl at his best as a songwriter
Some have compared the piano intro to this:

Still want Oklahoma over anything else.....
You and me both.

Axl implied that sone moody pre-recorded music played before several shows may be “The General.” I can’t recall where a video of that intro music was posted but someone else might.

The jukebox thing worked in that it created a buzz similar to when leaks happen, only TB comes away looking bad.
Would love for a leak of the demo of “The General” to occur, ideally out of someplace that is in the news. Maui and Ukraine come to mind. Would make for an awesome fundraiser (Some anonymous benefactor saying “Send $__ to the Red Cross and a second song will leak.”).

Pittsburgh tonight looks like it sold well. Still, lots of pit and $25 seats available for last-minute arrivals.
“Perhaps” seems like a given. If we hear the recorded instrumental that is supposed to be “The General” the forums will hit a whole new level of excitement. Live streams will be interesting this evening.

Rocket Queen might be the GOAT in this department. Pretty incredible shift in the final 2-3 minutes of that song.
Exactly, good call. Sometimes an idea can’t sustain an entire song but it can pull everything else together. Definitely the case here. The mood goes from sleazy and lusty to thoughtful and even regretful.

Sudden shifts are the band’s strength, similar to what McCartney does (think of “Band on the Run,” the reggae break on “Live and Let Die,” or side two of “Abbey Road.”
The finales of “Sweet Child,” “November Rain, and even “Paradise City” are not hinted at earlier in the arrangements but they all work brilliantly. Jamming unexpectedly complimentary ideas together is absolute genius.

Only gotten to hear it once, and on a phone. Did they just add effects to the vocal, or is an actual new vocal?
