I always thought Simon and Garfunkel's Sound of Silence is pretty sad.

The Gary Jules version of Mad World is quite emotive too.

It's been awhile since I've heard those songs. Yeah..I can agree.

Not a song but Badalamenti's score at the end of Mulholland Dr. is one of the most bittersweet pieces of music ever.

I absolutely CAN NOT understand how this song didn't make anyone's list...

Queen -- Who Wants To Live Forever

An absolute tear jerker, to me anyways, that continues to hold up to this day

Johnny Cash -- Hurt

Johnny's cover of the NIN classic is a tragic play with a nihilistic end. It brings more emotion out of the listener than the NIN version imo, and thus I nominate it.

Mad Season -- River of Deceit

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm72DPJCX58

Although I prefer AIC's Nutshell, this song is heart-wrenching. Despite coming out in 1995, several years before Layne's death, the song is basically his farewell. Part suicide note, part eulogy, I still tear up listening to it.

There's several others i'm thinking of, a couple Pearl Jam tracks (Nothingman instantly comes to mind). But these are the top ones imo.

Some good additions.  Not sure about the original list, haven't heard all the songs but Aguilera's Beautiful, while not a bad song, isn't "Sad" imho.  Or not worthy of being on the list.

I agree Counting Crows, they instantly came to my mind.  December or myb even Raining in Baltimore, pretty much the whole first album is depressing. Agree with both "Hurt"s, and great call on River of Deceit and Gary Jules, totally forgot about him.  There was a pretty downer song off Matchbox 20s first album, Back 2 Good, and a 90s hit 'Rockabye' years ago.

For an unknown indie song I always found this possibly the saddest song ever, "Yen & Janet Forever"

Duhhh, the piano & acoustic demos of November Rain, I was in awe of them when I heard the 8th generation cassette tape boots back in the day.  Always thought Breakdowns a pretty sad song too.

Agree with Nothing Compares 2 U being on the list though, THAT is up there.
