My favorite part though is how they just kill off Hicks and Newt in the opening credits. Cameron knows entertainment but it was a really dumb idea to include a child and a love interest in a horror franchise. They had to go and I love how ruthless they are about it. Adds to the movie and the franchise as a whole. It's a serious business and there aren't any happy endings.

I love this response! It's definitely a trigger in the fanbase still to this day. Im subbed to the subreddit /r/LV426 and just the other day there was a topic moaning about Hicks/Newts deaths which had over 300 replies, the majority of replies were also people complaining 16 Crazy that in 2022 so many people still care, shows how much they loved Aliens really.

I like Alien 3 too, certainly much more today thanks to the Directors Cut. My main gripe is just with the quality of the CGI/green screen, it just looks so bad in places, but it doesn't ruin the film at all for me. I love how dark the movie is, goes back to it's origins almost, removing all weapons, killing off not only Hicks and Newt but also Ripleys new love interest just as she starts to get close, and finishing it off with Ripley fucking over the company by killing herself in a pretty badass way.

I'd probably rank them as:

Alien
Prometheus
Alien 3
Aliens
Alien Resurrection
Covenant

Even Resurrection at 5th on my list I really enjoy the movie. I just need a version with some of the cheesy dialog cut as I think it takes me out of having any sense of fear when theres too many one-liners. A lot of folk hate the baby Alien at the end, but I think it looks pretty fuckin hideous and I'd be terrified seeing that thing in real life - which is kind of the point for me.

Lol, thanks. Yes I've also gathered Hicks and Newt have a strange but fervent fanbase.

Is it directors cut? They call it the Assembly Cut so I just assume somebody else recut it.

Ranking the Alien movies is hard. I like all of them but I also think they each have something different to offer. Alien is atmosphere and visuals, Aliens is humor and entertainment, Alien 3 is horror and drama, Alien 4 is goofball action. Then you have Prometheus which is something entirely different and Covenant which is a mix of Prometheus and the old movies. In some ways they are all equal to me.

Watched the Hobbit movies again. They are not so bad. Some silliness but LOTR also suffered from that at times. I like how they are more casual, exploring many different things in Middle Earth. Compared to the Amazon series this feels like a masterpiece. A worthy complimentary trilogy to Lord of the Rings.

The unproduced Alien sequels are something on their own. There’s an Alien 3 script starring Hicks.

I'm definitely in the Newt/Hicks fan base.

They weren't minor characters. If they were, I could have understood killing them off.

Z for Zachariah - An end of the world movie that is lacking in doom and gloom and more about a brewing love triangle. It had potential but it runs in place too long and you're not surprised by what happens.

Didn't like the end.

The Gambler - This is like the third Mark Wahlberg movie I've watched this year. Wasn't too bad but I didn't like the angle of fixing the basketball game. The casino is where the story worked best.

Try watching the 70s original w/Caan.  It's a lot more character based.

Trying to watch Neon Demon and the Suspiria remake and holy shit do those directors have their heads up their own asses.

I really appreciate Hereditary even more now because the director focused on character and story and understood they were making a horror film.

I didn't need to see more Hicks and Newt as I think their story is over but I think they shouldn't have been killed off as it invalidates the previous movie too much, like aliens is a 2.5 hour ride of awesomeness and there's no reason to shit on it like that.

However I can see they are baggage moving forward, but why not make the escape pod jettison Ripley (maybe cos it could tell she was infected?) and the rest of the ship sail on to earth.

That way they could make alien 3 with no Hicks and Newt, but also not destroy the previous movie. It would also give Rip a strong reason to desire to return to earth - which would make her sacrifice in Alien 3 all the more special. Likewise it could have been used by Bishop2 as leverage...like claiming they are back home waiting for her etc....

The Hunted - A Tommy Lee Jones- Benicio Del Toro action flick that feels like a semi-remake of First Blood. The setting should've stayed in the forest with them trying to capture Del Toro.  It goes a bit haywire when the story heads to the city.

The movie should not have taken place right after the events of Aliens.

Like you,, I didn't need a movie with Newt kicking alien ass. I just wanted a movie where her and Hicks dont die. Everything they did to save her was all for nothing.

Suspiria remake and holy shit do those directors have their heads up their own asses

That was so disappointing.  Not just the story either but how it was promoted. It was initially pushed witb Moretz as the star...and obviously she isn't. She's verging on being an extra.

I bet she got a good laugh out of that promo blitz. Got to travel all over the world on their dime.

I'll add it to my list. I didn't even know it was a remake.

Blonde

This movie is a steaming pile of horseshit.  I thought this was going to be an award's contender, but it's just a completely fictional account of Monroe's life with over the top sex scenes tossed in that don't advance the movie or plot at all.  First NC-17 movie I've watched since Showgirls and without question, Showgirls is the better film.  That's saying a lot.  Ana De Armas did a fantastic job in her role, but the story was just utter crap.

The First Power...Lou Diamond Phillips horror/supernatural film.  This isn't bad, actually kind of fun.  This is really similar or close to the Hidden which came out in 1987 and starred Kyle Machlahan.  There's one plotline that involves religion that kind of falls flat for me.  This was released in 1990 and is in obvious B movie territory.  Which made me kind of wonder:  Was Phillips ever considered an A lister?  I remember La Bamba and I think he did Young Guns afterward but he fell off or into B movie territory, I think.
