#1541 Re: Guns N' Roses » Stinson Vents at Del James During Dublin Concert » 818 weeks ago

Saw this article written by Mick Wall for Metal Hammer posted by Naupis at mygnr.  I actually think it's quite a balanced article from him:

In the aftermath of Reading, Leeds, and Dublin shows, Mick Wall weighs in on Axl Rose and the future of Guns N’ Roses .
Axl Rose goes on stage so late it causes the show to be curtailed. Axl Rose blames everybody except himself. Axl Rose fans go home angry and bitterly disappointed.

Um, is it just me or do those last three sentences induce a feeling of déjà vu? I mean, we really have all been here before, right? So many times, in fact, you begin to wonder if Axl isn’t just enjoying some sort of cosmic joke no one else is weird enough to get.

Even the most ardent Axl fans (a rapidly swindling band of naysayers) must surely admit after these latest episodes in Reading and Leeds that the whole sorry saga went way beyond the realms of ‘boring’ centuries ago, passed through the nebula of ‘unacceptable’ even before Slash and co walked out, and now resides inside a file marked ‘mental’.

And yet… I can’t be the only one either that finds the continuing war Axl seems to be waging against himself – and make no mistake, he’s the one that suffers ultimately, as he sits up all night furiously surfing the internet for mentions of his name, as insiders tell me he does – utterly compelling.

See the pictures of Guns N’ Roses from Reading

Me and Axl are about the same age. We grew up in a world where rock wasn’t just some pre-packaged item on a virtual shelf you could instantly download and try on for size. We came of age in a time and place called the 1970s when rock really was considered the last refuge of the outlaw. You didn’t join a band to make a million bucks. You did so to shake things up. Freak out the straights. Fight the man. Fuck all the rules until they bent so far backwards they broke in two.

It could be argued that when Axl refuses to come onstage until he’s good and ready, tells anyone who tries to impose their will on him to fuck off – including his own band, record company, managers, whoever – that it’s a simple manifestation of the philosophy he and I and a whole generation of others like us grew up believing in. That rock was something you needed to have the right juju to conjure up. Some found it through drugs, sex, black magic, or combos thereof. Whatever gets you through the night, as we used to say back in the very long day and even longer night.

The trouble is, that was then and this is now. And it’s one thing to want to sex-up your act, recharge the vibe, so that you can bring it to the people when you finally hit the stage. But when the magic backfires and all you do is piss off the ones that love you most – the fans – then something is very badly wrong.

There’s a reason Axl didn’t make it to the stage on time in Reading and Leeds and it’s got nothing to do with the spirit of rock’n’roll rebellion – or taking a nap or any pre-show deal he now says he made, as reports have suggested. It’s the same reason, in fact, that Chinese Democracy took 12 years to make and reportedly over $13 million. I think you know what I’m talking about.

Let’s hope Axl feels better one day soon. Or better still, calls Slash…

Yeah there's no crap he just gets on stage and puts on a kick ass show.

It's funny I was watching his Sydney gig thinking to myself if I had to make a choice I would rather watch Slash play GNR tunes with Myles Kennedy than watching the Axl Rose circus do the same.

I can't put my finger on exactly why, maybe it's the whole fact that there is no bullshit is a big factor.  No overblown stages, no tantrums, no late starts, no pyro etc just a band with their gear getting up on stage and doing their thing.  Just stripped back rock n roll and they all look like they are having fun.

Man sounds like you are doing a mini European tour Bono!  Why don't you come down here to Oz to see them in December, forget having a white christmas have a U2 christmas with 40 degree temperatures!  I got my ticket a week ago and they also just annoucned a second concert here in Perth yesterday which has me wondering whether to grab another ticket.

I've only seen U2 once and that was on the Popmart tour (I wasn't a big fan of that album at the time). I remember when they did Zoo TV before that one but they only came to Sydney and Melbourne for that.  They did come to Perth back in the Rattle and Hum days and I stupidly didn't go, but have some mates who did that like to tell me all about it.

I also think he needs to stop playing festivals.  With all the negativity sorrounding the band at the moment, that's when you are most likely to get trouble.  You will get people there that went to see the other bands and not GNR, they will be the first ones to boo and throw shit and won't care if GNR get up and leave.   I know Dublin wasn't a festival, but just thinking ahead regarding trouble minimisation.   Are there any festival dates still to come?

The Sydney V8's date could be an interesting one since if you were watching the race you get a ticket so you could get a high dickhead factor at that.  Plus the V8's usually attract an "interesting" demographic by itself.  PLUS there are races all day so people will be absolutely shit faced by the time the concert starts...

That right there is this whole thing in a nutshell. The saga used to be entertaining. Now its just a bore. Their amateurism and "unpredictability" is what makes them so boring and predictable. The fact its not even a creatively viable unit musically is the cherry on top. Cant record one note in four years but can play AFD in your sleep? Big whoop.

Totally agree with all this.  Del, Fernando, Beta et al can't have their fingerprints on this thing any longer if he wants it to work.  I'm sure they are good intentioned but unfortuantly they don't cut the mustard in a professional sense.  He needs to employ some professional people to run all aspects of this circus - BUT he needs to actually listen to them and follow their advice.  Unfortuantely history seems to demonstrate that Axl is the ringmaster and he won't listen to anyone so sadly I don't see the professionalism of this outfit changing.

Unlike you James, I dont' yet find this whole thing a bore, I still get a kick out of it - I mean that in the sense that it's funny like watching a TV sitcom or something.  But my attitude to this band has changed over the last 12 months or so to the point where I don't give a toss what happens.  Yes I still watch, yes I am going to catch a local show here in Oz because I like the music and I like Axl and his artistic abilities.  Difference is if the show was cancelled I wouldn't be a bit disappointed, compared to a couple of years ago I would have been devastated.  I guess I just don't care as much anymore coz this band doesn't seem to care.  They also don't seem to be going anywhere - I agree too with what you said about the creativity void, I don't see this "band" being allowed to create anything new, so Yawn!

I got my ticket for Perth yesterday.  There was a presale for Motorplex Members (which apparently somehow I am, I went drag racing there once so maybe that was how) so I got an email and bought my ticket yesterday.

Although December is a long way off in GNR time - anything could happen before then...

Yeah get a whole lot of people together on the piss, then give them an extra  1 - 1.5 hours to drink while they wait with nothing else to do, the outcome isn't going to be pretty.  The natives will get restless.

It shouldn't play out that way from either side, but unfortunately it does.

There certainly seems to be a lot more dickheads in the crowds more recently.

Ahh ok, I hadn't look at any of the HTGTH threads to get any context of the article.  I assumed he was referring to the late starts.
