#1671 Re: Guns N' Roses » MATT SORUM 'Wasn't Asked' To Take Part In GUNS N' ROSES Reunion » 526 weeks ago
People call Matt an asshole but he was on record a while back as saying he wouldn't do the reunion if asked unless he could share the role with Adler.
I think that's the kindest thing i've read out of ANY member of GNR.
If you go back and look at the rest of them, and I say this as a fan, it's a series of self absorbed and self interested decisions every time.

I love the way slash's has a slow build too. Like at first I thought "oh he's not really going to do much other than play something like Robin" for the first few notes, but then it was like - holy shit - he just unleashed and the thought comes to mind "this really is Slash's band" - Robin tried to emulate his style for this song - but there's just no substitutes when it comes to GNR.

Bumble let you try it? Nice. But seriously, goes on to show how much work it is to be in this band.
Try wielding that thing for over 2 hours in front of thousands of people while on painkillers and jetlag
Bumble got a lot of flack for being other than Bucket and for his public demeanour, but he's still one mean guitarist.
Absolutely.
I think Bumble is massively under-rated because his style is so different to Slash's and thus for fans of the classic band he's a strange fit for GNR. However that's more about Axl's plan for the sound than Bumble's fault. Meanwhile because people warmed to Bucket it seemed Bumble got hostility on that front too. Then it was compounded by the 3 guitar policy that made the songs sound different and forced Bumble to do nothing much of the time when he could have been shredding.
However at the end of the day he is formidable on guitar. I mean you can hand him a guitar and he can literally play anything and I mean ANYTHING.
As for his demeanour he's a very fun guy to hang around with and actually a very nice person it seems. I know he got a bit angry and made some public comments a couple of times about GNR - but hey - even as fans we get mad about GNR sometimes - I can't imagine how frustrating that must have been to have his talent, to have made it into a band like GNR, and then to not really have a chance to shine and for the band to stagnate for 10 years. Can't blame him for a little frustration. Especially considering the health issues he went through at the same time.
Anyway, yeah he let me have a shot on it at a clinic he did at a music store here. It's very hard to play but he makes it look so easy.

New intro by Slash is very cool, but it doesn't alleviate any of the issues with the song.
I agree. I'd drop the old intro entirely (it's basically just the chorus anyway) and go from Slash's intro straight into the first verse.

In fairness to the idea of his being lazy we are comparing a studio recording - and one where it's known that thousands of hours and takes were involved in most parts on the record - against a live performance - the second known time he has played the song and the third time he has played with the band in 20+ years.
I think a studio version of this - or even this same solo once he's played it more would impress.
#1676 Re: Guns N' Roses » Fortus in the Pale Divine » 526 weeks ago
Does sound a bit like INXS.
I really like fortus take on the James Bond theme.
And he also has some good solos in Dead Daisies (although the songs overall are a bit bland).
He's a good player - him and Slash going forward is a great idea.

I always wonder how in God's name he hits the right notes when he does that "guitar-punching" thing. And how he manages to keep it in tune.
I'd hate to be his guitar tech
It's like how bumble plays that fretless monster and somehow hits the right notes. I played it and it feels like a violin with the weight of a semi-trailer.

How many hundreds of videos of this show are there in circulation?
I have yet to see one from that vantage point.
Off topic: I think that video is taken by our boy Smoking Guns.
On Topic: I feel bad to be bashing Robin as I know there's guys on here who like him. It's not a slight but I think Slash's style just suits Axl's epics so well. I heard the new TIL and it just felt to me like that's how it always should have gone. Whereas Robin's solo was adequate to me but felt like someone trying to emulate the UYI style of Estranged or November Rain etc.

To be honest I far prefer the Slash version, and this is coming from someone who wasn't a hater of the original. I know there's some like James who never bought into it - for me I always felt it was doing the job - but I could imagine something nicer.
I feel the slash version nails that emotional crescendo in the way the Robin version was attempting to. That's not a slight on Robin - building to an emotional climax is pretty much slash's trade mark and so there's no shame in this "loss".
So on this one I think Slash wins.

Wow night and day to my opinion.
I'm unsure about the Better solo until I hear it more (liked the new intro) but I'll grant robin's outro had a good melody.
However to me that TIL solo is so many lightyears better than Robin...and not just for shredding...the way the whole solo just builds up....it's great.
